so today i saw my friends.. he had need for speed rivals or w/e.. omg the screen was amazing. now i want it so badly that i was thinking of returning my iPod (still under warrenty until march 9) and getting my 300 bucks back to buy the PSP. I will most likely purchase more then one SD card so that i can store all of my music and games and videos and stuff.. but i was wondering, on the included sd card (i dont know how much mb it is sorry) about how many songs does it hold W/O leaving room to save games sotre vids etc.? if i wanted room to store vids and save games? thanks!

it comes with a 32MB ms and that isn't much to hold anything but save files. You could prollyh put about 5 songs on it in 128k quality.
A 1GB stick shouldn't be more than $120, that is the biggest stick you can get for now.

I heard there will be a 2GB stick comin soon.. this true? and also, since the 1GB is 120.. thats like a third of the cost of the PSP.. is it worth it? if i get the PSP.. i know i wont be able to afford the 1GB though. so either way.. it really doesnt matter.. maybe ill keep my iPod as well and ask for money haha.

I think the max it'll ever support is 1GB. Hey, I've got 4 memorysticks back from the days I passed on the iPod and bought a CLIE. What a waste. I always thought Sony was going to increase the size. Nope. Why go with a proprietary format if it's INFERIOR? HELLO!? SONY!?
I can't even use them in this device.
Did anyone else notice that the screen on this thing has a crappily low refresh rate? I was playing Ridge Racer on it, and despite super-high FPS, the opposing cars showed noticeable ghosting- everything looked like maroon blobs when the intensity got up.
I'm very dissapointed. Neither the NGage nor Zodiac have this problem. It's inexcusable that my cell phone has a better (inch per inch) screen. This thing needs Poly-Silicon / CG Silicon badly! It's great for displaying photos, or viewing the web, or even movies, but gaming? It hurt my eyes.

it's not an SD, it's a memory stick so prices are 4x :(
2g will be supported and anything else sony/sandisk can come up with
songs are 3mb ave so around 160 songs, after the 512mb is formatted to 476mb.
blue coyote you have one?

I got one after seeing the huge pile of 'em at K-Mart (bet you nerds who waited outside for 10 hours feel pretty dumb, eh?) , but ended up returning it after being wildly dissapointed with the screen's refresh rate.
It hurt my eyes. Ironically, K-Mart also sells the Zodiac, and damn the Zodiac is a sweet device... if only it had more games.

What kind of math says $120 is 1/3 the price of $250?

I havent seen it but i know its definitely not as sexy as the psp, and i will have faew ganes probrobly after a couple months(nba street, dynasty warriors, gta, gt4, midnight club). Also I dont like the look of palms at all and hate using a stylus pen. Definitly not for me but seem s to suit you well.
Has anyone w/ a psp tried putting ATRAC3's(plus) on the card yet. These are about 1/4-1/5 smaller than mp3s and will definitly take the place of MP3's on my card. On a 700 mb CD-R i get about 125 mp3s but w/ atrac3pkus i can fit close to 500!!!!AMAZING!!!

The PSP is far from an iPod (or any other HD mp3 player, for that matter) replacement music-wise, but I would definitely sacrifice it for the PSP if I had just purchased one and needed the money.

Ipods are great but i will never need that much storage. As i would put new songs up there the old ones would just sit there wasting gigs, so the psp is a perfect companion for me. But now where to get $250?? plus money for a 1 gig stick(atleast $120) is beyond me. But when it happens it will be worth it!!!

I agree! And everything is going by REAL fast in Wipeout Pure.
I should be getting NFSU: Rivals and Twisted Metal: Head On in the mail, today......GameFly.
The regular Memory Sticks go up to 4GB.......of course, it costs wayyy too much now ( $1k). (Plus, it's not a DUO.....so no PSPing). Best price I seen was a 512MB Pro DUO for $62.99 shipped from Amazon. I'm still holding off, though.
At least my Clie handles MS Pro......so, all I need is the DUO adapter, and I can just switch between it and the PSP! :D

From the screenshots, Ridge Racer appears to be very graphic intensive......I'll have to give it a try.

The FPS of gameplay is good, the screen just can't handle it. The screen can't handle the mockup of the old racing game during the intro.

Have you seen any of Wipeout Pure, or its intro? The intro alone has visually surprised me........the light effects......and it just stays smooth.

For gaming, so far it does seem worth it........I'm not getting rid of my iPod anytime soon (it was a gift from my lady, afterall :) .) But, I do plan to keep a few playlists on Memory Stick (once I get a higher capacity one).
Spiderman 2 looked grrrrreat on there (the UMD version).......in fact, after watching it on the PSP, I noticed Peter's teacher had only one arm; then I heard his name Dr. Connors. I finally put 2 & 2 together........that's the Lizard! :hee:

Keep in mind, if you're using it as a media convergence device, there are better options. MS Duo is extra-pricey, and is limited in its storage capacity.

Question: Can you make a mini dsic cd like how you would burn a cd, and play it on the PSP? How about burning a movie to a miniDVD?

That is a theory.......of course, the one thing at this moment is: the UMD casing. We'll see what happens in the future...

There is no minidisc compatability with the PSP. UMD's only.
And if you think Sony didn't see the possibilities ahead of time, you're wrong.

You never know. The sizes of the disc inside a minidisc and a umd are exactly the same size(if not mistaken) so a quick switch could work. its just an issue of the psp reading the disc correctly and finding out the formated data of a umd.

LOL, you think Sony hasn't thought of that? They're some of the greediest f*cks on the planet and are partly relying on UMD to help revive their company. Somebody on Engadget figuring out how to use miniDiscs in the PSP compromises that greatly. They have thought of everything, and you will see, for I am sure there are plenty of hackers/techies/geeks, etc. currently trying what you just mentioned.

your definetly right about sony. But i can dream because a 1 gig minidisc is about $7-$8. That would be crazy. But yes sony isnt stupid and this is exactly why they releases umd because they could have easily went on md's. I do have hopes in the hackers for finding out how to put games on the memory sticks but that wont be for a while if it happens :)

Believe me, if it ever did go down that way, everybody on the planet earth would be purchasing PSPs. It's just that UMDs would be an utter waste.
See, the PSP is alot bigger than the PSP. It's basically going to be (at least, this is what Sony wants/is expecting) to Sony what the iPod is to Apple. Not only is Apple making a profit off those iPods, there's also iTunes, iPod accessories (those branded by Apple), and the fact that there are many iPod users who have switched from Microsoft computers to Macs. Looking at a tiny white iPod, you could never see all of that, huh?
UMD's success will depend on how well the PSP sells. If it gets good market penetration, we'll have production companies putting movies out on DVD and UMD. There will be a UMD section in Wal-Mart, and Netflix will begin offering UMDs to rent online. Sony is also going to be opening up a movie store shortly (one that they're billing as an "iTunes for movies"), which will likely coincide with the PSP's built-in (but currently only hackable) web browser. Speculation is that Sony may end up allowing us to download movies directly onto the PSP through that online movie store.
So, as you can see, Sony has a lot riding on this UMD format. It surely won't become as big as DVDs, but Sony will have a complete lock since they're currently the only one manufacturing UMDs and the PSP.
Now, picture the instructions on how to use a miniDisc with the PSP circulating around the internet. Picture UMD sales/rentals becoming worthless since we can now put the data directly onto a miniDisc and use it. The damage would be so great that Sony would have to pull all miniDiscs from shelves worldwide.
Sony knows all of this, and they did everything within their power to ensure that it doesn't happen.

i for one will never purchase or rent a umd. Id rather save up and get a big ms since i already download illegal content as it is, might as well put it to use rather than pay for it if i already have it( i dont hav that kind of money). This is what sold me on the psp and this is exactly why this device will fit me well.

Actually, I can see Sony overlooking the possibility of using MiniDiscs in the PSP. For one thing, anytime something "comes in a case", you know there's a reason for it, and it's not what you think. My 2 DVD-RAM drives use cased discs, because the discs are volatile. There was a competing type of laserdics WAYYY back in the day, where the disc was encased in a big plastic sleeve, basically like a record sleeve, and you slid the whole thing into the player. Worked like a dream, never had to touch the disc. Well, I popped the tab on the sleeve of a Star Wars:ANH disc, and lo and behold, it's a black laserdisc in a special case! Interestingly enough, almost 30 years later, no oxidation. : ) Whereas some of the newer, mid-90's discs have become "skippy". If you can use an MD inside a PSP, it'll be an issue of Sony using a tweaked laser pickup, nothing more. It could be as simple as messing with a potentiometer that controls the laser frequency. I will say, though, that if it was easy to use an MD in a PSP, someone in Japan, or with a Japanese PSP, would have already done it. That doesn't mean somebody won't figure it out in a few months, though, in a more difficult (physical hack) way.

hows the online play?
It was very nice! You have 3 options.........Ad-Hoc(PSP-to-PSP), Infrastructure (Internet), and Infrastructure LAN (Local Network, I assume). Choose Infrastructure, and it will ask you what connection to use......connects up, and takes you to the "Lobby" page, and displays announcements.....tells you how many are online, etc... Then, you just select the Rooms options and you have the choice of North, South, East, and West (shows how many are in each).
So, you're in a room......and you have a list of games, their type, and ping (or, create your own). I didn't create a game myself, but...I believe you can change different options on how the game will play (weapons, life, location, etc...).
There's also a Chat for the game! (Of course, you are using the "phonepad" method......unless.......keyboard, perhaps? Or microphone...even better) Anyways, the gameplay was very smooth (when you had a good ping).....vehicles everywhere (I like Grimm, on the motorcycle :).) Very fun....very.

If there was a player, would a UMD movie be viewable on a TV? Or would the format be way off that it wouldn't look proper. Do you think sony has thought about adding a UMD drive to the upcoming Playstation 3?

PSP = 480x272 = 1.76
16:9 = 1.77
so you will see a black border.
they released the psx in japan which is a home entertainment system based on the ps2. if they want to succeed, umd players are inevitable.
