Ok I read on a site saying that Sprint doesnt have to really do any major changing to there towers execpt simply adding a new channel card and an additional RF carrier.

Is that costly or something because its seems very simple and shouldnt take but a Matter of months.....Can someone whos knowledgable in this Ev-Do stuff explain this to me

THANKS

Side note... while deploying EV-DO would be cheaper than building out a entirely new network it is by no means cheap. The main upgrade is cards at the sites themselves called DOMs (Data-Optimized?-Modules) and if they are anything like the old CEMs (Channel Element Modules) they probably cost at least $30,000 to $90,000 a piece (depending on the capacity of the module) and while each site needs at least one, many will need more than one. That adds up to a lot of cash. EV-DO RevA will require a software upgrade (also not cheap) and an all new type of DOM. Strangely enough, I have been told that some vendors are claiming that it will be cheaper to upgrade to EV-DO now and move to EV-DO RelA than it will be to wait and go directly to RelA. For the life of me I can't see how that would be, unless the DOMs can be software upgraded or if the vendors are just giving major incentives to do so and encourage people to move to DO now. It's interesting at least...

Ok thanks!!!

You also have to determine how many DOMs you need in a given area, order them (it can take months to get that many in), install them in each site, test them, and drive test the area. Also because of the amount of data you're tring to pump through the network most sites will require an addtional at least 1 addtional T1, which most times needs to be ordered through local telco(s) and can take from weeks to many months to get installed. After that engineer type folks like to let the new network "soak", just let it be (usually with a small test group) and see if anything breaks. If I remember right Vision was launched in September/Octobor but our network had been up and able to process data that May.

Thank you!

I guess it's a lot like installing things on your computer...you don't just dump a bunch of stuff on it and hope it works, you install one thing at a time and make sure it works before you continue...

now that must have been an angry customer - when i worked for sprint (mainfraame nerd), we had a disgruntled employee enter a manhole near cowboy junction - filled it with hay, pour gasoline on the hay and - well its obvious - this was before the sonnet rings were in place and caused a big time disruption

another disruption was caused to the sacramento datacenter (may it rest in peace) was caused when they filmed the commercial starring a r/f tower - 100% digital network - except that internally we were using it
