is there a way to completely block incoming text msg on to my rl 2500?
i never send or recieve text messages. but lately i've been recieving text messages intended for someone else. things like.." come pick me up at 7" "hey what are you doing now, wanna go play?" etc
and apparently i'm going to be charged 10 cent per text message.
the cs rep told me since he can't see it on my account to wait until my bill prints out then talk to them about having the charges waived.
also something i didn't understand was the rep told me.. as long as you do not open and read the messages you will not be charged. i tried to explain that when the message comes in and i open my phone i can already read the entire text msg as the msg is displayed. do other phones have you open a folder before you can read the text or is it like my phone where it msg is there when you open the phone?

Apparently a rep told this to my girlfriend, also. Maybe it's phone-specific? I understand that voicemail could.does work this way, but text messages? Makes no sense, since when I recieve, they're already on my phone... We should make a petition or something that would allow certain options, like SMS, to be restricted, or maybe an option to reject the message. If it really is the case that you have to "open" the message to be charged for it, I don't see why it doesn't work.
On my Sprint phone, an a460, it shows up that I have a new message, and then I have to open messages, and go to text messages to read the message.

My 7400 might show the message when you open the flip but in the left corner it says "view" this is the equivilent to opening it i guess because if you dont view it it will still tell you you have a new text message and you can delete it w/o opening the message

well when they aren't coming from the sprintpcs.com page, it has a number right? text the guy back and tell him he's got the wrong number and that it's costing you money for every text he sends you.

As far as blocking it goes ...
There is no quick fix as the filters users can set can be bypassed by some sources. The only definative way to stop messaging is to have a trouble ticket created asking for the messaging capabilities of the account to be crippled. I don't know why there isn't a simple way of doing it...its not like IT people sign some hipocratic oath saying they will do no harm to systems and networks? I need a button I could click labled "F**K MESSAGING UP, YO." Not all people use it and most parents abhore messaging and its charges.

It sounds like the rep might have been feeding you line, maybe just wanted to close the call. If you were to get charged only when its read, then a message would have to get sent back automattically when you hit the "view" button. It wouldn't appear that any message is being sent tough. Sending a confirmation message would probably be much like sending/recieving an SMS in the first place, and the phone doesn't show any "sending" message when you open a message, nor do the Vision arrows light up. So I'm not too sure if this is true; but i could be wrong.

The rep must have been confusing Shortmail with SMS. With shortmail, you are not charged for the notification, but if you select go, then you are charged for vision usage or if you have a 2g device, then voice time (although most people have some sort of vision plan).
As for SMS, once you get it, it is charged against you unless it is from another Sprint user.
At this moment, the only way Sprint can block messages is to turn it off at the switch level. Unfortunately, the billing for messages happens before the switch. In that situation, any messages sent from a Sprint user would not charge you, but any content provider msgs(yahoo,MSN,AOL), other carrier's messages, or, if they are still enabled on your manage page, any messages originating from the website or email would and you would not receive them.
Sending is just the opposite. Since the messages are stopped at the switch (customer usually receives an error 97) and never hit the billing system, they are not billed at all.
This will be addressed with SMS phase II (or so I am told) but that will not occur until the latter half of the year.

That's one nice thing about Verizon...it's a selectable option.

the RL2500 manual says it uses shortmail, not SMS; therefore you should not be chrged .10/message. shortmail usually has to be 'opened" to be chargeable. It is a little unusual if your phone displays the entire message without having to be 'opened'. If you ARE charged, then it should be .01/kb, and almost all brief messages are less than 1kb.... a good cs rep would know how to look up what you have used in data or SMS before the bill cuts, but cs training sucks, so most reps don't know how to do it.It is actually so easy it is pathetic that they are not taught how to look it up.
On the rare occasion you are receiving SMS/being charged for SMS messages on a phone that is not 'supposed' to have SMS,then you have another problem, hehehe, but that is another story....
When the day comes that you DO truly have an SMS phone, then you can sign into your private account on the PCS website and there is a section where you can block specific phone numbers or domains (such as Yahoo senders) from incoming SMS messages. OR, you can get a tech rep to block all SMS at the switch level with a trouble ticket.
You'da thought they would've made blocking easier, but some dorkwad at HQ apparently didn't think it through when they launched the service, got in a hurry and forgot a few things;not to worry tho', it happens with all carriers on some item or another.I think Sprint is still the best, all things considered...
