So why is it that GameCube and Xbox aren't included in this? They're controllers do the same thing. And what about all the computer gaming controllers?

This might actually be good for Sony. Maybe the PS2's sales will get a boost.

Somebody posted this at Engadget:
"Now it should be noted that when MS aggreeed to pay the 23 Million, they bought a 10% stake in Immersion. Think maybe Microsoft is fighting to keep Sony from using the patent which they own a part of?"

I'm thinking maybe Immersion has gone around, doing this to all the "vibrating remote control" companies and Sony was the last hold-out?

Maybe there's some specific things that Sony's has......while the others don't?

Edit: And possibly what Corey said

Possibly...but if it's MS doing what Corey said...then I'd like to kick them in the nuts.

Yeah, this has been going on for quite some time. Immersion was just so small that the public must've been ignoring it:

Touch and Go
David Armstrong, 02.28.05
Forbes.com

Suing Sony and Microsoft and staking your company's existence on the outcome--this is not a preferred technology strategy.

It was in the late Fall of 2001 when Victor Viegas finally got fed up. In the past year Sony Computer Entertainment of America had shipped 10 million of its PlayStation 2 game consoles in the U.S., and Microsoft was on the cusp of releasing its rival Xbox game machine. Viegas, chief executive of tiny Immersion Corp. in San Jose, Calif., knew that his vibration technology was inside those game systems, making their controllers rattle and jump in the hands of kids fragging blood-soaked hell beasts. And Viegas wasn't getting paid for it.

So in February 2002 he sued them for patent in-fringement, taking on two of technology's biggest players in a bold legal campaign that would drag on for two and a half years. Viegas risked derailing an already sputtering growth story and being cast as a noisome nobody trying to extract a toll from richer firms. A loss at trial would make Immersion's claim to intellectual property more or less worthless.

But Viegas got Microsoft to settle and in September beat Sony in court, winning $82 million for lost royalties. Sony promises to appeal. Though Immersion's future is still murky, it shows that an underdog can, from time to time, take a shot at the giants and land a decent blow. "I joined the company because this technology has potential. But this is not a skirmish I'm going to shy away from. If we did, no company would ever take us seriously," he says.....

And I was wondering why that "Dual Shock" crap wasn't put in the PSP....

Looks like Sony should've went with Microsoft's idea. I bet Bill Gates is laughing his geeky ass off right now.

God forbid you're playing Twisted Metal...and ram into a wall...the thing vibrates right out of your hands and you drop it on the ground...*shiver*...horrible thoughts...

I know! Or Wipeout Pure......I've been banging enough into the walls, let alone all of the explosions. Smart thinking on keeping the vibrations away from the PSP.

Some straight bull. I can't believe this is happening.

I don't call it bull. Its Sony's own fault. The company will most likely win, even after the appeal, but Sony won't pull their product. I wondered why there wasn't "shock" on the PSP since they love it so much. I always thought they did a better job with it then MS.

Anyway, its only the controllers and not the consoles. Sony won't hurt that much, they'll just have to make up for this lost revenue.

But, that company is claiming everything that takes advantage of their technology........that includes the system and the games (47 or so) that use it. ..besides the controller.

Sony will end up beating this, whether by settling or through the appeal I'm not sure.

The PS2's sales have been declining quite a bit over the past year or two. If anything, this can only boost sales for people actually believing that the PS2, its accessories and games are about to be pulled from shelves.

About them putting computer controllers in it. Most of the controllers i.e. Saitek and Logitech use the Immerson engine. Playstation 2 also uses 2 motors like the Immerson engine does too. While XBOX and Gamecube only has one. I think?

maybe when the price gets reasonable and the games don't cost as much as the PS2 games... when that happens... the PS3 will be out!

Impulse buys should be outlawed. LOL

Its just the duel shock 2 controller (maybe 1). Im sure sony will settle and/or go to the drawing boards and create a new duel shock that does the same thing but doesnt break any copyrights. 3rd party companies do it, and nintendo has their own way of doing it. I read in the paper on this story that MS had an agreement with said company, so i'm assuming the xbox controller uses the same technology but doesnt infringe on a copyright.
