Your area just got Cingular? You should wait to hear how the service is before you switch, since the towers may not be as abundant in your area for GSM service.

I had Cingular 5/6 years (?) back, and it was okay. I like Sprint a lot better back then, and now as well. YMMV.

Is your Sprint that bad? If not I say wait it out til your contract expires, and then try/switch to Cingular.

Oddly enough, I'm in the same boat as you. Love moto phones, love the razr. Cingular is also new to my area, however that is not a good thing. Cingular coverage is nominal here and around the state it's still pretty poor. You may want to reconsider. Maybe verizon with the new v710 thats supposed to be coming out soon.

does sprint typically have better coverage than cingular?

You have done a search before posting this topic and you would have known that you can get out of your contract:

http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61849

If your too lazy to click on the link above, then I'll just tell you. Call Sprint and tell them that you are about to move to an area that does not have coverage. They will ask for a billing address in the area and if they confirm that service is not available in that area, then they will cancel your service. But please be warned that they will mail your last bill to the new address for where you tell them you will be moving. So make sure that you know or remember to pay your last bill.

Or you could always wait until your contract ends.

In Orange County, CA most most definately. I get reception EVERYWHERE. I get reception in my dorm room, full 4 bars. My roommates barely get 1 or 2, and they keep having their calls dropped in the room. My roommate had to buy a bluetooth phone and earpiece, so that he could put his phone out on the window sill (sp?) and get some reception that way.

Sprint typically has outstanding coverage area and especially for a digital network. I'm not going to say that Cingular doesn't because they just acquired AT&T and probably have a broader coverage area now (probably the largest). But thats not to say that that will increase call quality. Sprint tends to have calls that rival that of landline phones in clarity, so definitely do some homework on switching before you actually make the switch. You might end up regretting it.

I agree that Sprint has outstanding service down here in southern georgia as well. In my dorm room my phone gets 1 to 2 bars but that is great for a building made out of all brick and steel. I have never dropped a call in here and one thing that I notice about my Sprint service is that I can still use it inside of Wally World (Wal-Mart). Other people I see on Moto phones (and others), which more than likely means another carrier, are standing at the door yelling because the person on the other end can't hear them. So they have to tell them they will call them once they get out. I just laugh and continue on with my conversation as I shop for food, etc...

Well I guess that Sprint has gotten with the program and will be cracking down on endeavors that will cause them to loose money in the end. I for one am glad that they are spoiling some peoples plans, you should have never signed a two year contract or you should just wait it out. Patience is a virtue.

I also live in Orange, CA. Yes, I agree that I get fairly good coverage here, HOWEVER and as others have noted, You have to call someone TWICE before they get a ring on their phones.

Most of my calls end up in Voicemail and I never got a single ring. Same as when I call any of my other 4 Sprint lines, First call never makes it through.

Orange County is still spotty. A friend of mine, that was born and raised in Orange County, visited last summer and still found tmobile to have better reception.
