Tried it. Very fun, but bulky. Screen is great. There is some lag with audio and video. It's nice, but should be priced about fifty dollars less. Just my opinion.
Someone always has got to say something bad... I don't know how you call a 4.5" screen bulky. What do you want, OLED screened on sheet metal that reads games from flash media?
There's alot of features packed into that thing, and $250 for everything that comes with it is fairly priced. Its what the Lynx and TurboGraphix 16 portable were priced at WAY back in the day. My only gripe is that you HAVE to get the bundle and that you can't just buy the system by itself. $189 is very fair for just the system.

Got it lastnight. Charged it, woke up this morning and started playing with it. The graphics are amazing and the gameplay is smooth. I watched about half of Spider-Man2 and have no complaints about picture quality. I already have it loaded with MP3's and Photo's. I'm very impressed and it's well worth the price of admission, IMO.

Get a game yet? They only had 2 Wipeout's in where I went...
How about the demo disc?
I saw a video of Wipeout Pure - they said they were trying to go back to the roots of the video game. I didn't pay attention to the first couple minutes, when they said it was for PSP, and though it was for PS/PS2 the entire time.

I was wanting to get Wipeout before seeing any reviews......and when I looked at IGN, they gave it the highest rating of the launch titles they reviewed.

It looks really fun. I like games that you can just pick up and play for 5 minutes and put down again. I like "involved" games too, but I like "meaningless" fun too. :)

Twisted Metal and THUG 2 Remix...they're both unbelievable. I watched the demo disc, you can't play any of the demo's. They also had a handfull of movie trailers for upcoming new releases.
Online play for Twisted Metal is the main reason I purchased the game.

I can't wait to try online play.......Wipeout Pure was supposed to have "Infrastructure" multiplayer, but the box says Ad hoc. I dunno...
Even if I have to wait 6 months to get one, I'm still going to get one.

I went to EB Games at midnight for my kid, who had been saving his money for 3 months to get it (birthday/xmas/chores). I haven't played with it a lot, but the screen is incredible. I played Need For Speed on it, which he also bought, and it played great, and looked great. I'll be checking out the MP3 functions later. Oh, I also watched about the first 10 minutes of Spider Man 2 and it looked amazing as well.
This looks to be a real winner--again--for Sony. Nintendo GB/DS, I think, will be relegated to the 12 and under crowd. The PSP seems to be a real gamers system. And all the other multimedia capabilities are just icing on the cake.

I don't think it is bulky. Maybe it will be for my 8 year old...
I got metal gear acid, nfsu, ridge racer, and lumines.

The only thing I noticed is that the finish is so glossy, that if you just look at it wrong it gets all smudged. My son wiped it off like 3 times in an hour last night.

Yeah, I noticed the lack of a USB cable as well. Not a huge deal, but you'd think that Sony would've thrown that in.
Has anyone tried the WiFi yet? I won't be messing with it till I get off work and attempt to pry it from my kid's clutches, so I was just wondering about it.

Dead Pixels on New PSPs?
The cries have been heard, and there are many. It seems Sony pushed those 1 million PSPs out to the US a little too quickly, with reports swarming in regarding units with dead pixels. Some PSPs seem to have it worse than others: some have large groups of dead dots and even entire rows or columns. The unit we bought last night had a big dead one right smack in the middle of the screen. The folks at the Sony store were kind enough to replace our unit quickly and quietly, but reports from some online vendors are less promising. We’ll keep you updated as this unfolds.
Engadget (http://engadget.com/entry/1234000070037508/)
And I'm with you, 640. With all of the initial complaints about "bulkiness," I was getting worried. But after seeing it for myself (not to mention the pic that booyakafoo just posted), I don't know how the hell somebody could make that claim. I can't believe how small it is.

I like the PSP as a gaming device, but ugh, the memorystick just kills it for me (for the same reason my CLIE collects dust.) Playing games is great, but I want something that plays movies well, and WiFi is best for email / internet (yes, surfing the internet wirelessly is something I do!) Since I'm not a hardcore gamer, the Zodiac and 7710 make my mouth water more than this does.

I haven't noticed any lag between audio and video. Memory card wasn't an issue with me because I have the Sony DSC-T1 and a card reader built into my desktop. Just insert the card into the PSP and format it. It creates different folders on the card. Put your jpegs in the PHOTO folder and put your MP3's in the MUSIC folder, easy. Wireless is seemlessly integrated, it was almost too easy to connect to my wireless network. No dead pixels. I was actually expecting to be dissapointed because of all the hype surrounding this machine, but 16hrs later there is still a smile on my face.

FloorMatt, unfortunately, Wipeout64 blew, blew BLEW compared to the the others... How does Pure compare to 64, I'm wondering? For one thing, I never thought the N64 controller was made for gamers, and racing with it was a pain. I could personally see myself having troubles with the PSP, unless you can zoom out far enough. That's my one problem with racing games.
f
I can just see camera issues ruining the gameplay for me, too... Hopefully they've fixed those issues... How 3D is Twisted Metal?

Wipeout Pure's opening sequence looks AMAZING......of course, I haven't really seen any on the other systems (Xbox, PS2, and GameCube)....but still....wow. It reminded me of something, but I don't know what.
I only played a quick Free Run race, but it was wonderfullllllll :) I bet I could control it pretty good with the analog stick (need practice), but the D-pad worked fine. Didn't notice any camera issues.....I believe Triangle lets you check the backend (probally for laying prox. mines). The engine jet plume and crash effects were nice :) I need to play some more of it.

WARNING: There ARE "pre-releases" of the "office" version of the PSP that gives you email, word processing and internet capabilities, but do NOT put it on your PSP. There is plenty of information out there stating that the image could potentially fry your PSP and stores will not replace your PSP if you do.
Hopefully, whatever they come out with will be nice.

By the way, what's up with these dead pixel issues? Obviously, it's going to happen to a certain number of machines, but that's not my question... Where are these stores getting their replacements???? Or did Sony actually provide enough machines to retailers, for once? I really figured people would be turned away... But Engadget reported that one of their devices had a deadite (I'm coining it, back off! lol!), and they just got it replaced at the NYC SonyStyle store they bought it at... Obviously, that store probably had a few million in the back, since that's where the launch party was, but what about other retailers? Or is this one of those "Return to the Manufacturer, Not to the Purchase Store" type things? I've always thought that was shady, lol.
f
Holy! Tremors 4 is on! Where's the UMD????? Sorry, lol.

Make sure you thoroughly read over the BB agreement, though. It may have changed, as did the one that covered the cell phones did.

The PSP certainly is more bulky in some ways than say an Advance SP...
LOL I just noticed that guy took the pic of it in his car. Which means he probably opened it as soon as he got in it.

Just don't get how you call it bulky. Nintendo DS - thats bulky. Atari 1st gen Lynx - thats bulky. Hell even the Sega Game Gear is bulky.
The PSP is almost smaller than the original GameBoy.

...but, the PSP has a drive bay for its discs, as opposed to a cartridge SLOT. It also has more buttons and a larger screen. So it may be bigger than the SP (overall), but I bet the ergonomics are better.
Now before anyone argues the portability issue - the original GameBoy was near impossible to put in your pocket. I had the 1st gen Atari Lynx and I love it, but you really couldn't take it anywhere. I have a GameBoy color which I never play, unless I go on long trips that require wasted time.

I have the GBA SP. Now the only time I play it is for Wario Ware, that game is a great time killer. I never carried the GBA in my pocket anyway, it was always in a briefcase or backpack. I'm still loving THUG2 because the last Tony Hawk game I played was pro-skater 4 and THUG2 on the PSP blows it away.

Yeah I did open it as soon as I got in the car.. actually I drove to the gas station and opened it while filling up.
I ended up with two.. after I showed my girlfriend, she had to have one also.
I never really looked that close but mine from bestbuy has two dead pixels and the one I bought from game crazy has one. They are barely noticable, but I am going to try my luck at an exchange today. I bought the PSP at best buy and don't expect a hasle, but at game crazy I think they are going to tell me to talk to sony.
It's not noticable enough that anyone that isn't looking would notice and they are on the sides, but I see em every damn time I play now. I'm like that..

The only "bulk of the PSP is that's long......duh....Widescreen. :hee: Other then that, it is fairly thin. Sometimes it's kind of awkward to hold (control-wise).....but you move your hands just right, and bingo!
Gotten some practice now....with the analog stick. Works pretty good for racing (for some people). But...oh my my.....If you have or will have a PSP.....you must get Wipeout Pure. (You probally should like racing....just a lil :) .) I was really getting into it...yelling at the other drivers for shooting at me, yelling at what happens....you know. There's 10 pickup items, too.......very nice choice of things.
And.....from what I can recall, Wipeout 64 is #%@@$ compared to Pure.

But what I was saying about the dead pixels thing, and getting the PSP replaced, is that they somehow DIDN'T run out of stock? Like I could go buy one now? (I'm not going to, I'll wait for more games) That would be the first time in a while that a console (I think this counts) wasn't notoriously unavailable... The PSTwo and the Xbox have even (apparently) been hard to find these last few months.

haha yeah, the best buy that I bought mine from was out of the 150 units they got. They sent me 10-15 miles down the road to the other best buy that still had 160 units. The best buy in oceanside,ca has 220 units!
I exchanged my psp that had two dead pixels. The new one has one also. I think I will live with it.
fyi, I called sony support about the dead pixels and they said that they will not exchange unless it affects game play. Something about more info on page 13 of the manual. It basically says you are going to have a few dead pixels. deal with it.

I'm lovin it. My coworker got one along with Wipeout and some wannabe Tetris game... Luminus or something. Both are pretty cool. He played Wipeout online with other people too.... he said that was pretty phat!
If only I had $250 to drop on that.... me and my friend were sold on it. If we had the cash we'd prolly get it and just play each other all day. Maybe if the price comes down....
And there's so much you can do with the lil thing besides play games. That's the really cool part about it all.

Creating a "pipeline"......if I get bored sometime, I'm gonna play around with that :hee: Of course, you won't have to do this for all games....alot of others are going to have Infrastructure (Online/ "Hot Spot") play built-in.
Ooo I tried the "Download" option from the Wipeout Pure main menu......and, it asked me what connection to use.....then it connected to the net, and opened a webpage (there was a symbol in the top left corner, like a browser's working icon). Where are these stores getting their replacements???? Or did Sony actually provide enough machines to retailers, for once?Sony Delays European PSP Launch to Meet US Demand
European gamer friends, get the tissues (or credit cards) ready. Sony is delaying the launch of the PlayStation Portable in Europe by “several months” in order to meet the demand on this side of the pond (sorry, suckas!). The PSP was originally supposed to launch in Europe close to the same time as the North American launch (just a few weeks later), but Sony’s factories haven’t been able to pump out the little fingerprint collectors fast enough to do a simultaneous launch. They’re now going to wait and see if they can meet the demand in the US before setting a European launch date.
Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000513036136/)
I exchanged my psp that had two dead pixels. The new one has one also. I think I will live with it.Do not "live with it." There is not supposed to be one dead pixel on that screen even if Sony wants to cover their asses with that disclaimer. If they're still exchanging them freely wherever you got that PSP from, then take it back and get another. If there's a dead pixel on the new one, then take that one back and get another. Don't settle, Sony knows this situation thoroughly and sold you the damn thing anyway because they're banking on you just settling.

Well besides Twisted Metal and THUG2 I picked up Tiger Woods today. I would recommend all three. I can't wait for GTA to come out now. As for photo's, MP3's, and Video you definitely need at the very least a 256MB card which can be had for less than $50. I have a 512 in the PSP that I use with my camera for now, but I'll be on the look out for deals on a 1 or 2G card.
Oh, and don't spend the extra cash for a Sony card, they are all made by SanDisk anyway.

I am also wanting a large memory card but debating rather to get it now or wait. Of course I waited less than 24 hours after the psp was released to get it :hee:

You can't, yet. They are rumored to release a patch that will give the PSP basic PIM functions and Web-browsing capability.
Do you think this will happen and any idea how long? Probally a dumb question but do you just put your ethernet cabel in the psp to play people on line/ and eventally web? Anything you don't like about it?
thanks

This is a pretty good idea to get a couple games for a good price.

fyi, i did this yesterday.
I went to game stop and grabbed a 9 games from 4.99 to 9.99, some duplicates. Game stop has a deal if you by 2 used games you get one free.
I spent 50 bucks at game stop and took them across the street to EB games and got Ape Escape, Wipeout Pure, and Twisted Metal. I had to pay tax at EB (around 9 dollars) for the new games but that was it.

Well, there is not an ethernet port on it.......but, you could easily get something to give you wireless (a whole number of things). Yes, you can play people online....and yes on web (once that is added). It seems there is a browser already built in.....just not normally usable (just for different game's download pages......as in, content for them)
Everybody doesn't like the glossy screen......but, you do get a cleaning cloth. :)
Hmmmm, the earbuds don't stay in......but that doesn't matter. I can't really think of any bad things, off hand. We'll see over time..........P.S. No dead pixels on this one. But, there seems to be a fine hair beneather the screen....however, it doesn't affect anything.

Can you tell us what games you bought to trade in?
I hope I didnt wait too long to do this. I'm going to call EB tomorrow and see if they are still doing it. If so, I may just try what you did.
On a Side note. Has anyone bought a game they didnt really care for? I bought Need For Speed and I'm just not into the rice race thing. Does anybody want to trade me for another one? This was a $49.99 game, but I will consider any other game. I'm mainly looking for sports games or Tony Hawk or Lumines. Let me know what you got.

You are good until 4/10. Games available for this are MLB, World Tour Soccer, Gretzky NHL, NBA, ATV, Ape Escape, Wipeout Pure, and Twisted Metal.
Compare your games to this list.. I only had one that wasn't on the list. I kept it.
http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/ads/shops/instoretradein/exclusions.asp
Then take the list (i put it on my T650) to game stop, blockbuster, or game crazy and start hunting. I spent about a half hour going through the games at my local gamestop. Look for the 9.99 ones and under then compare to the list. The gamestop near me is pretty organized so it wasn't that tough.
I can't remember all the games but I got a couple spider-mans, midtown madness, ribbit king, black and bruised. Make sure you look under consoles on the list. Some are excluded under one but not on the other.
Good luck.

It's because Wipeout Pure has a Downloads option.....and it gains access to the browser, I suppose.

You should enjoy it as a game, too :)
I think I'm going to try GameFly out for the trial (at least).....maybe I can try some games out before I buy them. Sony ought to go to a $39 - $29 priced game format.....instead of $49 - 39.
Let's keep a MS Pro DUO price watch going...........$64.99 for a 512MB SanDisk at Amazon. No Tax and Shipping, of course :)
