View Full Version : Incoming Text Messages not working after porting number to Sprint (from Nextel)

Well, I ported 2 phones from Nextel to Sprint last night. And incoming/outgoing calls, and outgoing SMS/TXT is working.

However, receiving messages from anyone EXCEPT SPCS seems to be non-existent.

When I signed up 2 days ago, they gave me a regular number cause I told the guy I wasn't sure if I was porting or not... during the day or so that I had a sprint # inbound messages from other carriers worked fine. But once that number port went through, no inbound from other carriers.

When I talked to them over the phone to do the manual programming of the phone they had me change the MDN to the number I ported (from Nextel) and the MSID they told me to leave set as the number they originally assigned me (before asking for the port).

Anyone have any ideas what's going on? And if it will ever start working?

Actually, what I would do is call *2 and ask to speak to a Vision Tech (I gather that the Sprint phones are active and the port is complete).

Be patient with the CSR, but insistent....you'll need someone who knows Vision.

--->Good to see you made it! Too bad I don't get Geek Bux for bringing users over here.... ;)

My friend had his number ported to Sprint from ATT (when they were ATT) and he had the same problem. It lasted about 1 week until everything was sorted out. I'd keep calling Sprint if I was you and tell them how unhappy you are.

Two things.

First, AT&T used 15 different systems to keep track of customers....that is an added kink that no other company has. JEM coming from Nextel, so even if the symptoms are the same, the disease may be different.

Second, rather than complain to ordinary CSRs, wouldn't it be better if he got a Vision tech to *fix* the problem?

Yes, the port completed in about 3 hours and 7 minutes :D Only thing I've discovered as Not Working is the inbound Text Messaging.

I'll see about some Geek Bux for ya Psy :D

Did your friends issue get fixed in a week because he was bugging them or did it get fixed because things had to "finish" trickling through all of the systems?

I am highly considering calling Sprint back, asking for a Vision Tech, and telling them they need to get it fixed, and quickly (in a nice tone of course).

I think you are correct. I think my Nextel billing cycle just completed (23rd to 22nd monthly).

I was able to send a SMS from my Tmo Sidekick to my new sprint phone (w/ ported Nextel #).. and it came through.

I'll have to test it with some other phones/providers here at work (Co-Workers rock) :D I'll report back later

Just give the port time. I had the same problem when I switched over from T-Mobile to Sprint about a month ago. Whether or not you call them the problem will be fixed. The problem with porting is that we don't give the system "enough" time to fully complete the transfer. Even though both companies say that the port has completed, the systems need time to catch up and fully migrate your information over to Sprint. Your problems will be worked out within a week.

I have the exact opposite problem...please help!

I ported my number OUT of Sprint to AT&T for the iPhone and left my wife at Sprint to avoid the ETF. I now cannot receive texts from ANY Sprint customers at all...this has been going on for THREE WEEKS! I can send to anyone on Sprint and receive from everyone BUT Sprint! Any ideas?

I ported my number over to Sprint from Verizon over 2 weeks ago. I had the same problem mentioned. I would only get some of my intercarrier text messages. I notice this problem most with Verizon and AT&T/Cingular. I've had friends and family follow up to see if I received their texts... and maybe out of the 5 that were sent, I would only receive 3 or 4. I ran a test of this over a period of a week. And until this day, it still is the same.

I've called Sprint and spoke with a vision tech or pda technician who tried troubleshooting my problem. Reprogrammed my phone and reprovisioned my text messages, but still.. same problem. According to them, everything looks good and normal, but obviously that isn't the case here.

I got onto this forum and started using the suggestions I saw, ie. Putting a 1 in front of the area code, clearing out my inbox, etc. Yet still no luck.

I also read here that maybe my phone number had not completed transitioned over from Verizon to Sprint, and maybe that could be the reason why I wasn't getting my text messages. But Verizon confirmed, that according to their system, I was no longer their customer and they show my number be ported out successfully.

I called the Sprint Vision technician/PDA technician, and they had me track down the times I knew when I was suppose to get a message, but missed. So I did, I gave them the phone numbers and the times I was suppose to get the message, but didn't. They used a ICM tool, or Inter-carrier messaging tool, to see if the message had been sent to my Sprint phone. The technician said, if the ICM shows Sprint did receive a text, but I did not get it on my phone.. it could be a hardware issue. But if Sprint does not show any record getting the text message, than it's not a hardware issue, but the sender's issue. Meaning, the sender, from the other carrier, is having problems sending messages to Sprint. And yes, you guessed it.. Sprint says, according to their ICM tool.. there is no record of any texts showing that it was suppose to go to me. They then tried suggesting to me that the problem was most likely my friends and family who have other carrier's problem and that I should have them contact their providers to see what's the problem. I have a hard time believing that out of the 6 years of having this phone number, that all of a sudden, after porting to Sprint, other people's carriers can't send text messages to me.

I'm not sure what else to do either... so yes... any feedback would be great, too.

For all you guys with the same problem.. try troubleshooting it like I did, maybe you guys might have better luck.

The port in from another carrier SMS issue will require a rebroadcast of the port. This has to be done by our porting department. For the network change from IDEN to CDMA you'll need a CTMS ticket made. Tell them that after your account underwent a network change from IDEN to CDMA you stopped receiving text or whatever variation of SMS trouble. These tickets are quick and easy so it should only be 1 day or so until they contact you back and it's working. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. Before I call them, do you know if this will interupt service, and if so how long? At this point I am willing to try anything to get this fixed. I just want to know what to expect.

Thanks again, and I will keep posted.

If you ported your number in from another carrier and the porting department has to rebroadcast the port they recommend turning your phone off and leaving it off for 4 hours. For the network change from Nextel to Sprint (IDEN to CDMA) they just create a ticket which won't interrupt your service. The text messaging won't work until the ticket is fixed though.
