View Full Version : International SMS working yet?

So with our SMS messages coming in with a "1" in front of it, and Sprint indicating that it's because of international SMS support, has anyone tried to see if international SMS is working yet? Just wondering...

...it works if you use *their carrier's* directions....typically an email address assigned to the phone....

I tried sending one to the Philippines and it worked. BUT - the caller ID number is different from my PCS. It was showing as a local number over there. I had the receiver replied to me and I did receive it back. I tried it again today and it sure did work but it's still not showing my PCS # correctly and this time it's a different reply number showing from yesterday. I don't know what the deal is BUT it's a good start. IT WORKS! LOOKS LIKE INTERNATIONAL TEXT MESSAGING IS NOW CAPABLE! let's see how it goes in the next few days, weeks or months.

I guess it's becasue of Sprint trying to iron out the international SMS that I am receiving all of my sms/shortmail messages with the senders phone number rather than their called ID.
A call to Sprint said it was because my 8100 was using software version 1.15, so I upgraded it to 1.16. Same problem. Funny thing is the other 8100 I have in my plan receives messages fine.
I know, there are 1000 threads about this. Nothing I try is fixing mine tho. A second call to Sprint said 'just be patient, it will all be fixed'

I was also able to do this. I sent a message to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. When the person sent a message to me and when they called me back, several numbers were clipped off the end of his number to cut it to a 10 digit phone number. This caused my phone to claim that the call was coming from Oregon when it was actually coming from U.A.E. on the other side of the world. A few minutes later, it displayed the correct number when he called and text messaged.
So:
1: International Text Messaging now works!!!!
2: There may be some kinks to work out yet.

This is one of the reasons I bought my phone, and wasn't aware at the time that they couldn't send SMS's internationally. Have they just now announced that it finally works, phone number to phone number, without having to actually use e-mail addresses? Does this mean people don't have to use ipipi.com anymore? I want to test it! How would someone send a message to a mobile phone number in Austria now? Just use their number like you'd do normally, or must a prefix of some sort be used or something?

You have to dial 011+country code+phone number. It worked for me. I've been testing it for the past 5 days now. The only issue is the caller ID when he recipient receives my message. I hope they'll fix this soon too. The receiver doesn't have the luxury of hitting reply on my messages.

Yea, I started to notice this while I was travelling last week, so I thought it was a roaming issue. Between 40 - 70% of my calls/txts come in with a 1 infront and the rest still w/o (personally I hate the 1 in front, it's childish - you shouldn't need a 1) Anyway - with the Sanyo 5500 it screws up the number/name lookup because the phone is too dumb to realize there is an extra 1, but still match the phone #. I remember when I had a Samsung A460 awhile back, it would match even a portion of the #.
Anyone with a 5500 try and call sprint about this yet?? :irked:

Ive been getting that response for months from them.. They have a list of currently supported international txt providers in the help section on the sprintpcs site.

Whether Sprint's international SMS support is "working" or not would depend on how you define "working."
I can sometimes send and receive SMS from and to friends in the UK who are using O2 (http://www.o2.co.uk), and other times the SMS is lost and never received. And O2 isn't even a 'supported' carrier.
Even though Sprint insists that receiving (at least) is supported from T-Mobile UK, I don't tend to get very many. I've received fewer T-Mobile UK messages than O2 messages, in fact. When I attempt to bring up international SMS with a representative, eyes go wide and voices get hushed; many reps still aren't aware that newer mobiles support international SMS.
So, there's still a lot of work to be done with regard to international SMS. I'd have to rate it at D- at the moment. I can send international SMS almost flawlessly if I borrow a friend's Verizon or T-Mobile handset, so clearly it can be done. Just have to hope Sprint catches up before it becomes a feature worth switching over.
Mine works to Canada and Hong Kong. However, don't know why Hong Kong people can't reply. They just call me back, which is okay since it's their long distance penny!!!
But then again, I don't know how they are getting international long distance as part of their plan since they said that it's included as part of their minutes.
Now, when is our wireless carrier going to do that? Your calling plan includes full international calling??? They did that with domestic long distance ... how about outside of the country?

I got tired of spending $350 a month on long distance to the UK, so I got a Lingo (http://www.lingo.com) VOIP phone with a UK number and I just have lingo forward any calls to that number to my PCS phone, so it's a local call for them and it just comes out of my daytime or night and weekend minutes depending on what time it is here when they call.
I still can't send SMS to the UK any better than I could, but it makes calling friends and family easier and I don't have to put up with VOIP quality because it just forwards the calls to my PCS line.

Were you able to receive international text messages sent directly from the contacts/phone number without replying to a prior message you sent to them?

You have no trouble sending to Hong Kong? I tested my SMS to HK last night and it didn't work either way. Neither of us received our messages.

It seems that I can text internationally to both Orange UK and T-Mobile UK just fine...
But I can only receive from T-Mobile UK (Which sucks, cause most people I know are on Orange.)
I don't know anybody on O2, 3, or Vodafone... So I don't know if those are working or not...
I do wish Sprint would iron this stuff out - I also wish they had plus-code dialling on their (older) phones. (Yes, I'm aware that the newest phones have it... but it'll be awhile before they all have it.)
It was really cool in the UK -- Cause when you receive a text message or something it always says +44... or from the USA +1... Instead of this nice long string of numbers: 011447xxxxxxxxx (And since our phones are programmed to put the dashes in 3-3-4 it always looks really weird... 011-447-xxxxxxxxx)

it works only if it's replied to the original message, instead of sending a new message directly to the phone number. Outgoing message works fine, but still showing up as different phone number other than the origin phone number

Mine was working fine when replying to an international message but all of sudden it stopped working and they do not get my messages any more. I can receive theirs but when I reply back, they do not get anything.
Does anyone know if something changed on that? The only thing that changed on my side is that sprint added international calling plan on my account (without asking me) and I had them remove it. That should not affect SMS internationally now should it?
