I have a friend who is willing to switch to Sprint from Cingular, but only if he can get the 750 a/t min plan. I suggested signing up witha new # and I'll make the call towards the end of the 14 days, which I've done 2 times before with success on the 1st try. This time however, I didnt have any luck. I was told the plan was only for customers who have been w/ Sprint for years.
Should I just keep trying to call again before the 14 days are up, or has this process become just that, only for longtime Sprint customers ? I do agree in that Retention should not be abused, but in this case, wouldn't it still be worth it for Sprint to have the $40/month and a new customer, as opposed to not having it at all ?
All input is welcome.

retention is not for new customers, plain and simple. calling back won't do anything.

Heard the new guideline is 6 months or more Sprint customer for a retention plan.

6 months is the minimum requirement.

How about asking if they will activate a new line for you with the same plan as your current line. If you can talk them into that, you should be able to perform a change of liability.
Of course, this probably won't work.

nope, won't work. can not have a retention plan on a line set up through a transfer of liability.

coolqf,
My point is that my friend has no reason to leave Cingular. If this person was offered the $40 plan as my referral, this person would switch. My question is would it be worth it for Sprint to have this customer or not. If your desire is to be trigger happy and just look for an opportunities to flame someone, go elsewhere.

one reason to leave cingular would be coverage...or data prices...or a phone. no carrier is going to haggle with someone to join them as a new customer.
you say you don't want to abuse retention, but attempting to get a retention plan for a brand new customer is bordering on just that.

How about changing liability on a line that has a retention plan?

I had GREAT success with retention!
I bought an i600 phone to replace my a620(vga1000). I didn't realize sprint had neutered the phone so that it can't be used as a data/fax modem! which my old service contract allowed.
I went over to a verizon store. Got all the prices, new phone info, etc....
Called sprint to cancel my service. Retention department matched EVERYTHING verizon was offering.
INCLUDING using my phones as a data/fax modem since the verizon service allowed it.
Although they can't make my i600 data capable, any phone I have on the plan (like my new a700 on the second line) I can plug into my PC, and go online 24/7 for no extra fees or MB limitations.

I've never recieved deals from retention on a new line, but I have recieved deals. When I opened my second line, I only wanted a 1 year agreement. They gave me $75 in service credits and $75 off a 3588i (It had just come out). Having a 1 year agreement has value, right?
Or, you could hook this person up with one of your old phones, gaining a service credit for both of you.
If you really, really trust this person and have a credit class that allows it, open a line on your account. If you're talking to him often, it's going to save both of you money. You could even have him prepay the contract term or at least leave $150 ETF with you as a deposit so you can drop him if you have to. This path is fraught with danger, so be careful. Don't be afraid to insist on a phone that supports "Found Me" (mostly Sanyo - do a :search: ) so you can shut his phone down remotely if he causes problems.

Don't go getting overly sentive. Your friend does have a reason to leave Cingular, if he gets the $40 retention. How about we try to not contradict ourselves? You can do what you want, I'm not your conscious. I'm not saying..... stop being a hypocrite.

my "go get do that" was in mockery of your "'Don't go getting' overly sentive". Good use of the english language. Sad that I had to explain that.
