View Full Version : handling POP3 e-mail on your phone?

Hey guys. I have a Sanyo 7400 and will own a 5600 in a week or 2. What I want to do is read POP3 e-mail on it. I know the phones don't have this feature and if they did, I'm not sure they'd have the authentication required nor would they read Gmail anyway.

I tried the forwarding option in Outlook Express under rules. Better than nothing, works great but since my name is in the from column, replying from the phone would mean typing in their address manually.

So, my last option seems to be to write a PHP script for my webserver that will go to my mail server config pages, log me in, and turn on (or off) forwarding for all 3 servers and all I'd have to do would be to click a few keys on my phone to turn forwarding on and off.

This is one of those things that I can do but would rather not if there are other options. I've heard enough people over the years wishing they could read and reply to their pop mail from their device that it's possible that someone has come up with a solution long ago and thus reinventing the wheel would be a waste and for all my effort, someone might have somethin 10 times more developed or something.

So if anyone knows a good fix for reading your POP3 e-mail from your device that doesn't have POP3 functionality built in (and new mail notification via SMS is pretty much a must), please let me know.

If nobody has a solution then I would share mine when it's done but (1) it won't come quick. (2) Aside from forwardng gmail to your vision mailbox, a lot of it won't be compatable with your mail server's configs -- but regardless, I'd share if anyone wanted to see it.

So, any info, please pass it along. Thanks.

If you have unlimited Vision, then it should do you fine. Just open your browser and go to www.mail2wap.com. It can handle POP3 and IMAP4 email.

Are you sure that's the right URL?

I'd love this feature too. For some reason the email viewer that reqwireless has doesn't seem to work too well with Gmail.

The only phone that Sprint carried that had a built-in POP3 client was the Hitachi P300. If you can snag one I hear they're $20 during Sprint's clearance sale.

Yeah, I've always used the reqwireless one, which I consider pretty ultrahot. It all depends on your needs, tho I do like having it as a standalone app. The best feature is server-side translation of attachments, which means I can read Word files emailed to me on the phone, also view pdf's, etc.

Well, Vision's linking POP3 accounts is just not powerful enough. There's no authentication so if your mail server requires it, you're kinda screwed or I would use it.

Since I want to be notified of e-mail when it comes and not have to check for it, and since I'd rather not go through a 3rd party and put my e-mail passwords into their server, I'm kinda stuck working on this PHP solution to turn on and off forwarding of my 3 e-mail accounts to vision so that I can read them and be alerted when they come but I gota say, it's kinda a bear. I've made some breakthroughs tonight but there's just not enough good examples out there for using curl (if you dono, don't ask, you'll just get a migraine if I tell you. If you do know, you'll either agree or you're a PHP God who is thinking "What a whimp." (stumbling back to the source code once again to try to get the thing to log in and do cookies right <sigh>)

I actually got it to work while I was in Atlanta a few months back. What a pain! It downloaded 57 messages, all of which (unless I missed a block delete option somewhere) I had to scroll through to the erase option to get rid of. Do yourself a favor, wait until your next stop and pull the laptop out.

Would using BCPE address most, if not all, of these concerns?
