View Full Version : 5600 and 7400...Looks vs Features?

So about 2 weeks ago I picked up a Sanyo 7400. I picked it over the 4500 since it's a bit newer and has the multimedia features. Now the 5600 is out. Which is good and all. It adds double the resolution of camera, and an MP3 player with expandable memory. Seems like a lot of people here like it. There's just one minor problem...

It's UGLY. In my opinion anyways. I haven't had the chance to use one in person, but from the pictues I've seen, the phone seems like a step backwards in regards to actual case design and button usability. Perhaps it's just all the weird oval shapes, but I'm very much more partial to the 7400 and even the more industrial design on the 4500.

Is anyone else of this opinion, or are the few features the 5600 adds worth having an uglisih phone?

When i saw the phone's concept b&w picture I thought it looked AWESOME. Then when I saw a picture of the handset, I'll be honest -- I wasn't too wild about the design. Then after all the hype and discussion started pouring in, I kept checking it out and hearing about all the features packed into this little package. Now that I have it, I think it looks sleek!

So who knows, maybe it is great, maybe it just grew on me? I'd say go check it out in person once it hits the stores and make your own decision. :tu:

Just Got A 5600 And The Features Are Awesome, But The 7400 Had An Almost flawless Design, Ie. Strong Hinge, Form Fitting, Seemed Like It Could Take A Beating From Wear And Tear. Not So Sure About The 5600 Design. Especiall y The Hinge Versus The Top Heavyness Of The Phone. Time Will Tell.

i have fallen in love with the look of this phone...after seeing original pics of the phone i thought it was horrible....i thought nothing could look nicer then my 7400.....but as dave said...the features were just pouring out and i had to have it....now having the phone i think it has an awsome look and design to it...the outer lcd is also the nicest one of seen of any phone........i now look at my 7400 which is waiting to go back to costco and wisper under my breath "what a wimp".......the 5600 just screams power......it is hard to explain.....you just have to see the phone in person and you will understand........

7400 is no wimp--like our entire culture, the better looking ones don't need to be as functional to be as popular ;)

its one of those things...do you need the features enough to justify spending the money?

I beg to differ.......my 5600 put my 7400 in a figure four leg lock and had him submitting in no time!!!!!!......its funny because up until the day i got my 5600 i was all about the 7400 and it being the coolest and sexiest phone......still a great phone......and at 259.00 at costco there is not a better phone then it at that price range......not even close!!!!!!

I would much rather have an ugly phone with all the tools of the 5600, than a "pretty" phone that doesn't do crap. Just my 2 cents...

I'll choose the phone that will survive me. Features are nice, but they don't mean squat when the phone's broken. Too bad Sprint is all about the flip phones. I hate flip phones in general and find them flimsy. The LG PM-325 would have been a nice phone to keep if the slide wasn't so weak. 2 weeks of text messaging and it was starting to lose it's ability to lock open or closed. The internal antenna, although it gave a lousy signal, was a nice feature to have. Part of me wished I had gotten the Nokia, but I heard it gets lousy signal on the Sprint system and that the Sanyo line of phones got the best signal. If it weren't for the size, the 4920 would have been another good option for me.

Ok, I'm going way off track. I'm happy with my 7400. If the flip/hinge of the 5600 was designed a little beefier and the phone were a little more rugged, I'd trade up for the 5600 for sure.

I'm coming around though.. haven't actually seen it in person either.

I Cant See Spending $410 Plus Tax For A Phone. Spending $300 For A Sanyo 7400 Was Enough.

Now that you mention it. The 7400 is about the best designed phone i've ever owned.

I was set to buy a 5600, but I did the math, and bought a 7400, and an iPod shuffle instead. $259 for the phone, $99 for the 512mb Shuffle, total with Tax was less than $400. A 5600, with a 512mb card would have ran me closer to $500. Sure I would have had a slightly better camera on the 5600, but if I were taking portraits, I would use my real digi cam.

I always did and still do think my 7400 felt cheap, the plastic just wasnt like my old 5500. I enjoyed the faceplates on the 7400. I think the 5600 is way more sleek and sexy than 7400. About the hinge I find it handy to angle the face just like I want it when its sitting somewhere when im watching a movie on it.

the 7400 is a better phone overall. the 5600 is an ugly phone and its camera sucks. in my opinion, just about every camera on a cell phone sucks besides the lg vx8000. if you want a camera that takes very good pics, a cell camera aint the way to go. i like how the 7400 feels and i feel the 5600 isnt worth the money most payed for it.

It's all good.

Honestly, It's just a phone to me. I use like, a total of 3 features. Voice (obviously!), text messaging and games. I wouldn't complain much if I had to give up the text messaging and games. I grossly overpaid for the phone for the way I use it, but there didn't seem to be another one by Sanyo that was as small or sturdy. 80% of the features of my phone are wasted on me. :(

im telling you d00d that hinge is great for watching movies. I have a sticky pad thing on my car dash I can get the perfect angle with it. The "click" hinges you all came to love so much just wont do it they spring open

Yeah I kinda felt the same way. My wife gave to AOK to get the phone but I just couldnt justify the practicality of buying it. Opted for a $200 4gig i-pod mini instead. To me I would be spending $430 (phone) and $50 (memory card) for an mp3 player.

I'll check out the 5600 when it hits the stores. The 7400 is built like a tank and its niceto know the added protetion is there if u need it. I'm tired of silver phones. I dont get bored with the same color on my 7400. Dont really care about the mp3 player.

I wished Sanyo would just make a titanium cased phone with an internal antenna and perfect reception that's the size of a pack of gum. No flip, no slide, no gimmicks or gadgets. I want to be able to break macademia nuts with my phone. If someone shoots at me, I want to be able to wear my phone on my wrist and deflect the bullets like Lynda "Wonder Woman" Carter. Heck yes!

I completely agree. If you ask me, I don't like the ruggedized look and feel of a handset. So that is why I never considered the 7400. Each person has their own opinion and that is great because it gives us choices.

I was just speaking in general...and Dave's right, it really becomes hard not to want to defend our phones once we own them, whether we truly believe our phone is better than phone x or not. If you want to see a living example of this, go to www.epinions.com and on their 5-star rating system, count how many poor ratings you see from reviewers vs. how many good ones; people don't want to admit when they think they've made a bad purchase. Just human nature.

I for one have become really attached to the 7400, it's me. I don't need a mp3 player, no wonder kids these days grow up with no social skills there to busy listening to music all day long. I give permission to flame me on that one.

5600 reminds me of a "souped up" 5300. about the same size. and the same color. not attractive, but worth it for the features. attractiveness is optional, as far as i'm concerned. i wish it had the meeting mode like the 7400, though.

Well the 8100 was as durable as Titanium and you could unscrew the antenna if you made a little make shift tool for it and that thing would have great service no matter if the antenna was on or not.. thats about as close as you will get to an in-tenna phone that actually has good reception.

I think your eyes are just fine, Mark. I agree that the 5600 looks much better than the 7400. The 5600 is like a grown man in a nice suit while the 7400 is like a teenager in some raggedy, overly colorful and baggy clothing.

Oh are you trying to be funny?

I actually LIKE painting my faceplates. And secondly - have a camera on your phone is something NICE to have - not something that is needed. I just use my camera phone when I am putzing around or to add pics so people's phone book. The 7400 is what I like - if I had to buy now - between the 7400 and the 5600 I would still choose the 7400 b/c it suits my needs.

I dunno about the rest of you but my 7400 is the hawtness - custom Krylon painted faceplate and all! :hee:

If you are going to use my word you first of all need to use it CORRECTLY. Secondly if the 5600 is what floats your boat just so you can watch movies on your cellphone - then so be it. But dont knock those who chose the 7400. Obviously its what they want. The 7400 doesnt look like a fisher-price phone - never has and never will.

My opinion is this

I loved my Sanyo 7400...I like changing the faceplates and I liked the fact that is was definately durable. The fatures were great....I got it free as a swap for my sons phone...He loved the games soo he always played with it....now it is his.

5600 looks much better in person than in any pictures...It looks like a professional persons phone. In the sprint store today...everyone was hoo and wooo it- one rep passed to another rep WITHOUT asking me which pissed me off to say the least. I am configuring right now so I dont know right now if I like it better.

Whoa. De-escalate the situation, yo. Seriously, all, these are just phones. They're not an extension of who you are. No need to get nasty about it on either end. You'll probably own dozens more phones throughout your life and these things will be long forgotten in your memories when you get the latest and greatest.

SprintUsers.com was created in January 2002 as a resource for users of Sprint PCS products and services to learn about and share information. We have cll phone reviews, Cellular Accessories, Downloads, PDA reviews, Ringtones, all of the latest Sprint PCS news and information, an area where you can find help in creating a ring tone or custom image for you phone, and so much more. The most popular section is the message board where visitors can read and write messages, ask questions, and get advice about their cellular phone from other users.
