View Full Version : Adding Ringtones on 5600 via SD card?
I hoped to have this phone by next week, but this is really bugging me:
Is there any way at all to transfer AAC format ringtones from the SD card to the phone, or do you have to send them to your phone using a service such as focus? I know you can't use mp3's directly as ringtones (which is lame), but I read you can use the cumbersome 2 or 3-step process to convert mp3's to the AAC format that the phone will accept.
Thanks!

I would like to know too...
i am yet to find any way to send a ringer from the card to the phone.....i dont think it can be done......also....when you hook the phone up to your computer using the usb it only accesses the card and not the phones memory....

I am beginning to like this phone less and less. What good is the sd card if your phone information (ringers, games, wallpaper, etc...) is not stored on it? And accessing the card and not the phone via a cable is ignorant. What happens if you take out the card and try to access the phone from the usb?

for your games, wallpapers, and ringers.....the 3 megs are fine......actually, i would of like to see games stored on the card so we would have been able to get some really cool detailed stuff......the card stores your pitures, unless you use it for caller ID.....it then transfers to your phone.....it stores your videos......all your mp3's......and video.....you can put full movies on your card......and they look good aslo......with the right settings for video kbs. it doesnt even look choppy or distorted......it is clear and smooth.....after using this and knowing that they play at a true 15fps. you relize that sprint tv is no where close to 15fps......there is a big difference......sprint tv does not stream at full potential.......i must say i had this phone since last thurs. and have fallen in love with it......it is by far the best phone i have owned.....since i got it i have not missed my 7400 for a second....and i loved that phone also......i powered on my 7400 last night and after that i was like......man, how did i love you so much......in my opinion.....the 5600 is a power house......and i would be surprised if any one who has 7400 and gets the 5600 is unhappy......it is all that and soooooo much more....
I havent tried to access the phone without the card yet so i dont know if it will work.......

I do not doubt that the 5600 is a great phone and I would love to have one but maybe not as much as I first thought. The main point I guess I am trying to make is, other phones with sd cards you can pop the card in a new phone and within minutes you are up and running because all your information is stored on it. It does not appear that with the 5600 that is the case.

I may be. I was just hoping that the sd card would act in much the same way, I guess not.

My 5600 will be delivered today, but from what ive been reading here, they def. could have used the sd card to its full potential. Then again this could be *fixed* through software but as we know it is highly unlikly to happen. Know we all know that sprint cuts things short on its phones , lots of little things that can be adjusted or fixed through software, but we also have to understand we are phone geeks :) on a whole and as a business i dont believe its a big issue to sprint.
I am not sure but i believe its a no, Can we store the phonebook on the Sd card? Thats the one thing CDMA phones with SD should be able to do, the hardware is there, why not make it happen :)

I'd like to know if this is a copyright infringement problem, in which no cellphone will be able to do this, or if it's just the Sanyo 5600.

It would NOT be effective to be able to store picture IDs, ringers, and such on the SD card. Dave brought up a PERFECT example in another thread regarding this issue. Compare it to your computer. It would be like storing your wallpaper, Windows sounds, AIM sounds, etc, on a separate disk... it's just not convenient. Your phone would have to access the EXTERNAL memory every time someone calls. Dave explained it better but you get the idea...
The SD card satisfies the feature that it was intended for: storage. 3MB internal is definitely sufficient. The 5500 is only 1.5MB, and if you compare QCP ringers to MP3 ringers (~50kb::~120kb) the space is essentially the same damn thing! And AFAIK if you assign a picture as an ID it automatically shrinks it in size, so what's the big deal? 3MB easily enough. Yeah phones from Verizon or Cingular or whatever have 64MB internal memory, but guess what, this is Sprint, and this is what we got to work with.

As for the OP's question, I don't think it has been done yet, but I'm sure people are trying to find ways.
