Now that I have the 5600, I want to try to convert a mpeg, avi, or .mov movie file to 3g2 file. Anyone know how to do this?

I have successfully created 3gp2 movies using 2 pieces of software. Theyre expensive and hard to get but it works awesome and even look and sound better than the included Simple Plan Music Video in the "Others" Folder. I am discussing this with Deval on how we can incorporate this info into an FAQ sometime in the future.

What you will need first is software that can convert MPG/AVI/WMV to MOV format. I use Sony Vegas 5.0.

What you must need second is the latest copy of Quicktime Pro to convert the MOV file to 3gp2 format. QTPro is generally the standard when it comes to producing these types of files for all mobile companies around the globe. In addition you can select custom bitrates for audio/video, pixel sizes, etc etc. Just gotta be careful about a few settings which I will discuss later.

The reason i'm telling you guys to get the movie converter first is because QTPro will have problems reading MPG/AVI/WMV most of the time. And if it does read them, it can't export the audio track (in my experience).

Details will follow later!

yeah vegas is what you'd wanna use if youre trimming and editing too. Hopefully Deval's program can incorporate all of this. But then again Quickime Pro is one of the standard tools out there for doing just the conversion to 3gp2 or 3gpp

nope...D's program just does the final conversion...you are responsible for the cropping and such

d, what bitrates for the video and audio did you use for alien vs predator to get it down that low?

video - 192kbps (highest quality it goes, I think sprint must use something like 64 cause their videos look terrible compared to 192)

audio - 56kbps AAC stereo (sounds really good, although I have tried QCELP aka QCP and it reduces the file size by about 30% but not worth it ;)

FFXMPEG is pretty good if your on a mac. Just drag, drop, convert, done.

It is having some problems converting .wmv to .3gp, but other than that its great. I gotta check out vegas on my PC.

Now all we need is a program like the one i use that will download my shows from my Replay TV and convert them to a smaller format so I can watch them on my Pocket PC, but have it insted convert it to .3gp, that would be pimp :)

What video files will work on this phone? So far all I have tried is .3gp, will any others work? Also, how is everyone ripping thier sound for best results?

Is there any freeware or shareware out there that can do the same thing? I don't have the 5600 as of right now but plan on getting it real soon and a 512MB or 1GB card. I should just apply for a new credit card and get everything i need. You know would suck. If you lost your phone with a 1GB card. Lock/Line will replace the phone for $50 but I doubt they will replace the card so you are talking about over $100 to get a new phone and a new card if ur phone is lost or stolen. That sucks. Hope that never happens.

Would someone be so kind as to host a video somewhere already converted that I could put on my 5600 just to see how it looks? I guess I'm gonna have to look into getting quicktime pro to start making my own.

ok......so here is a link to a video made using sony vegas 5 and QTpro......
http://s3.youshareit.com/download.php?c77452746ca2aedbc688867c48fc77f2
it is a 2 minute video and is about 5megs......i used aac for audio at 128kbps.....and used 194kbits for video data rate.....by using aac audio the file almost doubles in size.....i used it because it was a small file and a music video.....if you leave the audio standard it still sounds good enough.....for the videa data rate though, the higher it is set the better it will look....194 is the highest you can set it for 3gp.....you can set it higher for mp4 but i havent tried it to see if it works......also the mp4's are much larger files.....if any one needs help or has questions just pm me or post them here so everyone can see......

5600 users. you can simply download psp video 9 and convert all your files to play on your phone. vob files, abi, mpg's etc. the software is free. Once you get just set the bitrate you like and the screen size to 176x144. I use a bitrate of 216 kbps. most movie's end up between 200mb-250mb. I set the audio to 64kbps STEREO. this program encodes to mp4 which you can drop in the media folder on you minisd. The files do not have to be 3gp. 3gp files are smaller but the smaller the mb the blockier the movie

Just use the directions found in the FAQ section for converting video for your MM phone. It works and it's free.
