I *JUST* found out this nifty little trick, but it requires Quicktime Pro.
When exporting your filoe, instead of picking mp4, select 3g instead.Select options. In file format select 3gpp2, then select audio, then do like you would do with an mp4, then select save.
not only do the files created this way sound BETTER, but they are actually a few kbs SMALLER. Just thought I would share my .02
