I used all the programs the tutorial said to use, but when I went to use PVConvert, it won't convert .wav to .qcp.

Drag and drop on the PVConvert app doesn't work.

Also, Pure Voice...I can't figure out how to make it save a .qcp. All it "Save As..." is .wav.

This is dumb.

When I open up PVConvert, it just flashes the screen and then disappears.

I think you guys are making the instructions up. I don't even think you have cell phones. :eyebrow:

Really?

Is it possible that you missed an instruction or 2??????

Because it sure as heck works for everyone else on this forum, and unless you read something other than English like Klingon or something, your answer lies within the FAQ. :D

If you are using the GUI version of Purevoice, hit "ctrl", "shift" and "C" ... that will convert your wav to qcp. Than "save as". ;)
And that isn't in the instructions because the instructions are made for the drag and drop method and not the GUI method. That my friend is why we have forums.

Where can I get the GUI version?

It is actually Alt-Shift-C!

I hope you all understand that I can't get PVConv.exe to open. As soon as it opens it shuts. Where or when am I pressing alt-shift-c?

I can't believe this is so dif***ult for me to understand.

It is actually Alt-Shift-C!

when you drag a wav file onto the PVconv.exe it should create a QCP of the same name in the same folder. it's that simple. a window is supposed to flash and that's it. nothing more.

man...

Ok, now the alt-shift-c doens't work now. This is retarded.

I give up. I've reconverted this stuff like 10 times without avail.

Cut MP3 -> Sound Recorder to 8khz, 8 bit, mono -> PVConvert w/GUI, Alt-Shift-C....nothing. No conversion and Save As... give me a wav file.

once you have the file saved...and its 16bit...but 8bit...but once you have the wav file, just DRAG IT OVER THE PVCONV.exe box...and thats all

check your PM, i made a video to show you the drag and drop process.

i would have posted it but the video is 108k, the forum only allows for 48k attachments. and i don't know of a site that i can upload it to. (southsidefunnies.com doesn't work anymore)

I'm far from being a newbie to technology, but it doesn't seem to cooperate.

I drag and drop my .wav file into PVConvert.exe, and the file it creates is a *ZERO* bite file. Is this a possible corrupt download?

That means you are doing something wrong.
The .wav file should be 16-bit, 8khz, mono.
If you are correct then maybe you should try CMX Studio.
It's free and has a GUI.
I'll edit a link ASAP.

EDIT:
http://www.cdmatech.com/products/cmx.jsp is as close as I can get you. It's free.

Actually, yes...and no. By using sound recorder, and re-saving I can get pvconvert to spit out a .qcp file approx 10% smaller than original. But once I upload it using bitpim it fails there. Getting late, work in the AM. Try again tomorrow night. Thanks for all the help so far.

Getting there ... which is only 25% of the fun, the rest is in the fight!!! :)

I don't believe you'll be able to upload through BitPim. Most phones can only receive MIDI ringtones through data cable connections. You would have to use an uploader like Focus or Rumkin.

That might explain it then :indiff: bummer. I don't have a data plan and I'm really just doing this for fun, guess I need to look into converting to midi then.

Thanks everyone for the help.

:headbang2 The problem turned out to be in the .gcd file. I opened up my gcd template and changed it to:
Content-Type: audio/qcp
Content-Name: DangerZone
...

That didn't work, it wanted to download a codec. So I pulled one off my phone that I got from DBRingers (thanks Don :) ) and tried this:
Content-Type: audio/vnd.qcelp (yes, qcelp)
Content-Name: DangerZone
...

That didn't work either :frustrate , so instead of having it nice and formatted I just typed it inline (the way it is brought into notepad):
Content-Type: audio/vnd.qcelp|Content-Name: DangerZone|Content-ID: donblay/ringer .... (the | were actually the control codes for carriage return/line feed in note pad, this is all one line when dl'd from one of the uploader progs).

So all is well again  . Thank You all for the help.

I have tried PVConvert and it distorts the file. I have tried 8 and 16 bit at lower volume levels form the wav file and a high pass filter. I then used PVConvert to convert the .qcp file back to .wav. Sure enough, it was distorted. Any ideas?

LouieLouieohoh

rky,
qcp's are very finicky ... on some tunes they come out great ... others, no matter what you do to them they come out funky ... it's because the audio format is so "compressed" you lose all the quality of the clip.
If you want, send the wav my way and I'll take a crack at it ... Audacity is a good place to start ... you can pull the highs and lows out a little and it helps the quality a little bit.

Don't know if this was mentioned, but there is a new version of PVCONV (3.1) available @ http://www.cdmatech.com/products/purevoice_download.jsp.

The download in the tutorial is 3.0, and was not working for me no matter how I chopped the WAV. It was just making 0k files.

this is from another website

HOWTO Make QCP Ringtones:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First off:

If you follow this tutorial STEP by STEP, you WILL be able to make ringers, just be patient and if you dont succeed, what was it....try try again.

This tutorial is for Sprint PCS cutomers only!

DO NOT go on to the next step, UNTIL you have figured out the one you are on!

There are many other ways to convert, slice, and change your file with other programs. This is just *one* method for making them yourself.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Programs You Will Need:

Go to http://www.winamp.com and install the latest version of Winamp if you do not already have it.

You will also need the Qualcomm Pure Voice Converter (pvConverter) which can be found here, ftp://ftp.eudora.com/eudora/purevoice/windows/PVConverter3_0.zip
-Extract all of the contents of the .zip file to a new folder on your desktop. There will be 3 files, look for the .exe file, that is the converter. (Don't do anything with it right now, it comes later.)

You'll also want the Pure Voice Player, which can be found here, ftp://ftp.eudora.com/eudora/purevoice/windows/PureWin132.exe

Now the first step in making a QCP is opening the mp3 file you want to use and making it small enough for
your phone to download, (this is usually around 30 seconds, although some phones can handle a little bit more).

You have two options on how to make the file smaller:
- Use a Program with a WAVE editor, like Nero (www.nero.com) or Cool Edit Pro(now Adobe Audition, www.adobe.com)

or

- Use the Windows 'Sound Recorder' (Start>Programs>Accessories>Entertainment)

I suggest using a program like nero, then the sound recorder for volume

You will need to open the 'WAVE Editor/Edit Audio' program in Nero (with Adobe Audition it should just come up)
-Go to 'File > Open...' and open the mp3 file you want to make a ringtone. It will create a Peak File, (lot's of up/down lines). From here you can find the exact part of the song you want to use (which again shouldn't be much more than 30 seconds).
-Click/and drag on the beginning point you want till the ending point, the peak file will turn blue, like this:

-Now you can press play on the selected item to make sure its the part you want.
-Now go to 'Edit' and 'Crop' the selected part.
-Finally go to, 'File' and 'Save As...'. Name the file and save it to your desktop.

Now you have to adjust the volume so it will sound right on your phone, open sound recorder (see above for instructions)
-Click 'File > Open...' then open the WAV file that you just made with the wave editor. You should be able to push play and hear the file you have cropped down. Here is where the practice comes in... You will want to use the 'Increase Volume' and *sometimes* the 'Add Echo' Features which can be found under the 'Effects' tab.
-Once you have the file loud enough to where it doesn't distort, go to 'File' and 'Save' (you should be saving to your desktop).

(See 'Winamp Settings' below for next step)

 Winamp Settings:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-Open Winamp...click 'Options > Preferences' (a box will appear) Find and click 'Output'...look for 'nullsoft disk writer', click that and then click 'Configure'.

Settings will need to be 8.000khz 16 bit Mono.

Look below for what the screen should look like. (make sure to have the 'Convert to format' box checked).

-Change your 'Output Directory' to your desktop.
-Close the Configure box, and make sure the 'nullsoft disk writer' output is highlighted, close that window.
-Winamp is now setup to output the right type of file for the pvConverter to be able to recognize to make the QCP. Find the current file you are making, and double click it so it plays through Winamp (you wont actually hear anything,if you have it setup correctly) this will put out a new file onto your desktop which should look like - 001_'file name'

-(Continue to 'Final Steps' below)

 Using the Alternative,
Windows Sound Recorder:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-(See above for directions to open Sound Recorder)

I personally suggest NOT using sound recorder to crop your file, but if you don't have a program this is your alternative

First you have to take the mp3 file that you want to make a ringtone, and run it through Winamp under the correct settings. (See above for instructions)
-Once you have the file that Winamp has produced, Open Sound Recorder and go to 'File > Open...' Open the file.
-You will now need to crop the file down to no more than 30 seconds, to do this, put the cursor at the point where you would like the ringtone to start. Now click 'Edit' and use the 'Delete BEFORE Current Position' feature
(if you are trying to get the intro of the song, you obviously won't use the feature, go to the next step).
-Now move the cursor to where you want the ringtone to end, (once again, it shouldn't be more than 30 seconds) Click 'Edit' and use the 'Delete AFTER current position' feature. Here is an example:

-You should now have selected the part of the song you want as a ringtone.

Now you have to adjust the volume so it will sound right on your phone, open sound recorder (see above for instructions)
-Click 'File > Open...' then open the WAV file that you have just made. You should be able to push play and hear the file you have cropped down. Here is where the practive comes in. You will want to use the 'Increase Volume'
and *sometimes* the 'Add Echo' features (which can be found under the 'Effects' tab).
-Once you have the file loud enough to where it doesn't distort, go to 'File' and 'Save' (you should be saving to your desktop).

-(See below for final step)

 Final Step:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that you have your file cropped down, ran it through winamp under the correct settings, and ran through sound recorder to increase volume all you have to do is Open the folder where you have the pvConverter, take the file from the desktop (or wherever you have it located) and drag it over the pvConverter like this:

A black DOS box will come up, DO NOT close it, it will close itself. This will also put out your new QCP file (it should be located on your desktop).

Now upload the file to your personal files on 3G, and you're done! Easy enough?

If this helped you, and I didnt confuse you too much, please Click Here and help a brutha out

I guess the question I have is with Wavepad. I can't get the files work work with the P3 Convertor they always come up as 0 kb. I understand how to make qcp files fine with sound recorder but I like the quality from wavepad better. I think the problem is when I go to save the wav file in "save as". You type in what you want to call it and then where you choose 8khz, 16 bit, mono, there is also a Format box that has PCM listed. Any ideas??? I guess that learning this doesn't really matter because I just got a MM-8300 and I can make beter quality ringtones (supposedly), but the directions on that are quite confusing from this site... Any help would be appreciated even though I know I am not deserving.

My Millie Vanillie and Twisted Sister qcp ringtones are fantastic! Thanks, purevoice!

When slowing down a song using purevoice, it seems I get a slightly better quality, or is that just me?

There must be a free converter out there for turning MP3 / Wav into MIDI...
Anyways, pay for a data cable. It is well worth worth every cent, giving you freedom from PCS Vision. (unless you really need it for something other that transferring data).

Purevoice..
Datacable...
Bitpim....

I love technology...

Okay, I accidently made them all 8 bit, 8khz, mono, can I just turn them all to 16 bit and it sounds the same? Would it be better if I started fresh and just saved them in 16 bit?

Curious about how to increase the sound quality output with PVC as well...

Finally got mine to work. I followed the walk through in the sticky using Wavepad and PVConv EXACTLY. Still getting files that at 0kb. Opened them in Windows Sound Recorder. Select properties and it show that I have indeed saved them as 8kHz 16-bit mono. So I select playback formats and click convert. Again selecting 8kHz 16-bit Mono. Click OK and save as new file. Drag and drop THAT over PVConv and it works!! Same damn file.....it just didn't like Wavepad saving it... (Was using PVConv 3.0 BTW)

EDIT:Using PVConv 3.0 WAS THE PROBLEM!! Downloaded 3.1 and what ever programing issue was incorrect, it has be solved in 3.1. Even my old files are now converting fine. Tried again with 3.0....output 0kb... drag and drop over 3.1....works perfect!

EDIT2: Also, no noticeable difference in sound quality when using Wavepad to PVConv 3.1... vs...Wavepad, to Sound Recorder, to PVConv 3.1 For the record.:)

A few things can cause this error.

Remedies:

Try a different uploader: http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=83030
Shorten the filename to under 20 characters to be safe
Remove spaces from the filename
