I have a really old Apple Powerbook 1400 that has been upgraded a few times. Works great, battery is a little weak after a few years of use.

Used an IBM Thinkpad A22m for 2 years. Riddled with hardware problems - entire LCD was replaced twice because it kept going "pink"... CD drive replaced once... motherboard replaced once... battery stopped charging after first two months. I would say it was a lemon, but it was a university-issued laptop and everyone on campus experienced similar issues.

For the last year I've been using a Dell Latitude D600 with XP Pro. Has a nice screen (high resolution) but the video card isn't nearly powerful enough to drive it (lots of redraw problems) and the screen flickers constantly when on battery power. Sound also has constant, annoying static in the backrgound and cuts in and out a lot when on battery power. None of this is acceptable for a laptop that originally cost right over $1,600. Luckily I'm paying for it with school loans (lol) as it is a university-issued computer. Oh yeah, and it turns on all the time in my bag after I've hibernated it... so my bag will be vibrating with the fan spinning like there's no tomorrow and the computer is very hot. There are a few good things about the Dell (namely, the screen resolution... not that many people want that) but the glitches kill any real usability (which seem to be on most Dell laptops in the last few years - check out the Dell Discussion Forums).

I ended up buying a used Apple iBook G4 just for personal work and honesty it is more useful than either of the PC laptops. I havent' had any of the hardware issues on the Mac that I had on the PC and everything works the first time, just as I expect it to. If you haven't seriously considered a Mac laptop, give it a try. They're cheap and in a lot of cases you get more with a Mac laptop than you will with a PC. Both of my Mac laptops (both of which were economy, low end models) have been much better than their PC counterparts in both form and function.

Good luck finding something that meets your needs!

I use an old delll 233. I don't realy use the net cept for SU - Email - news/weather - maps, stuff like that My GF works for a company that always ups the computers, every 6 months she gits all stupid and yells look what I got. I think they do it because she is a cranky ol #$%&. I.m kidden. Realy shes the best. But anyhow, I just don't do the fun stuff you all do, I just like looking around

I use an IBM Thinkpad T40p. I'm hell on laptops, and this thing is one robust sucker. It has a nifty little hd protector for if/when you drop it. It's got a bunch of other nice safety/theft prevention features too. Down side - expensive (but you can find a new or nearly new one that is a year or less old for a lot cheaper). Up side - it'll last.

I was going to comment on that.....I think it weighs at least half that

And what about battery "life"? :hee:

(all kidding aside.......that same one/kind was on G4TechTV before, and they did not care for it one bit. It's supposed to be a LAPTOP, afterall! But if you buy a laptop that you plan to leave at home...then that would be alright!)

I switched about 2 years ago so I could use an Ipod.Never looked back.
Why can I run Windows in Virtual PC on a Mac and it won't crash?!?

I also use a Panasonic Toughbook so I can run Windows and program A/V controls.
It is a great machine but it runs Windows.

I emailed the seller 4 days before the auction ended and offered 750 - she took it , could have gotten close to 1000$ if she had waited!

Just bought another year of hp warranty, im so paranoid. they have one for if you drop it or spill something on it, i think its 300/yr.... the standard was 99/yr. Ive learned to keep all glasses of liquid far away!!!

that accidental damage and theft insurance is a must have for a laptop. like when it slipped out of my hands while i was coming out of kinkos and the ink squirted out of the monitor like it was a homicide scene.

i thought my new hp zd8080 was the shiet until i saw this...

http://www.amazinglaptops.com/sager-9860image.htm

so what its not widescreen but built in webcam and built in mini tv tuner with dj music panel...damn. i still think hp's are much better looking though even though their oversized tv tuner attachment is an inconvenience

I got my laptop from Office depot. I was on Ebay, going to the tech stores like nuts looking for a display, managers special or something at a good price when they put this model out for display. It was a new display cuz I had been there the week before looking. (I know, I was obsessed). The manager gave me 10% off for it being a display and I applied that towards a 2 year extended warranty. peace of mind is really worth it.

And I can renew it before it expires. Buying a new laptop was a major research project for me. What sold me was handling one in Circuit City, plus reading owner reviews on a couple of HP forums. I felt like if I"m gonna drop $1200 for a computer I'm gonna get a damn good one.

I did check to see if my homeowners coverage would cover the damage on my old Toshiba Satellite computer but it did not. -oh well

missdiva

it depends how much you spend and how long you're keeping it really - I spent 750 and I am keeping it a total of 2 yrs, then selling it. so I bought 1 yr extended afer the initial year, I didnt feel likespending another $400 for the accidental for the 2 yrs. BUT if you spent a lot, it is worth it - or , if you take it everywhere/ are constantly moving it around , are clumsy, have friends use it, or are keeping it for a long time. Then its def worth it. I'm not sure what is better, the HP ones or the store ones...

I got a HP ZE4420. I got it about 2 years ago for about $150 or $200 under retail price, so I was quite pleased with that.... I still need to upgrade from 256MB of ram to at least 512! My $300, 3 year warrenty was a wise investment so far! My laptop has taken a lot of abuse, but my main complaint was that the CD-RW/DVD combo the first time wouldn't play DVDs, so I got that replaced and time-to-time, the darn internal power connection becomes loose here and there.... so I simply send it in... turn-around time is usually only 3-4 days (including FREE shipping).

P.S. - I got my 3 year warrenty through where I got my laptop at Circuit City.

I just realized that my iBook has 1g of ram instead of the 512 that its supposed to have. Lucky me I guess.

i upgraded from a dell inspiron 6000 mid range to a dell inspiron 700m high end couple of weeks ago. the screen is smaller on the 700m but i like the 700m better because it's smaller and easy to carry:)

Update on my Laptop situation

After going back and forth about buying a new laptop, I decided to keep my PowerBook for just a little bit longer. :)

I upgraded it. I added AirPort Extreme, a 60GB 5400RPM hard drive, I now have a total of 640MB RAM, and I got Tiger (10.4.2).

Still happy. :)

I have a sony VGN-s360P and a dell inspiron 9300. Now saving for a 700m to buy next month,, havent had a desktop in 2 years, and will never go back....I love the freedom...I use my friends wifi connection next door, but I pay him a few bucks a month, cause i got tired of paying 100 buck a month for dsl and a land line i never used, lol the only wire coming into my house is the electric,,

I just bought me a Toshiba Qosmio G25. This thing is huge and its a true desktop replacement. I'm not even thinking of taking around.

The Specs are:
Windows XP Media Center Ed 2005
Intel Centrino 2.0ghz
1GB of Ram
17" WXGA+ Trubrite Display
120GB SATA Hard Drive
128MB Nvidia Graphics card w/ a intergrated TV Tuner
802.11a/b/g Wifi + Bluetooth.
Harman kardon Speakers.

So far I'm in love with this thing. I could watch tv, play CD/DVD, and play Playstation 2 without having to boot the system. The only two drawbacks are that the system weighs about 10LBS and that the battery does not last more then 2 hours.
