Major Breakthrough Today!!!
Folks! I am a new member of this group, and a new owner of a Samsung Vi660. In fact we have four of them in our Sprint Family Share Plan. I have lots of ringers that I have purchased, and some I downloaded for free. The following is a Step-By-Step procedure for placing your dearly-loved ringtones into the Samsung A660/Vi660 phone:
1. The GCD Creator program does not appear to create the correct syntax within the GCD file that it creates. I used the "ChittyBang.gcd" file that is posted on the page at this location: http://members.lycos.co.uk/jab5915/samsung.html
2. I substituted the midi names within the GCD file with the names of my ringtones, and changed the cnts#.mid number that corresponds to the cnts# of my MIDI ringtone.
3. Using the Windows "Run Command" window (Old DOS commands), I renamed my MIDI files with the command:
REN cnts1.mid cnts1
Obviously, I used a different number for each respective ringtone (e.g. REN cnts2.mid cnts2). There can be no .MID extension after your midi filename.
4. I placed all my cnts#.gcd and cnts# (midi files) in one directory for easy reference for adding to the BitPim Ringers folder.
5. I powered off my Samsung Vi660, powered it back up, then connected the Data Cable to my laptop.
6. Started the BitPim program and went directly to the File System tab. Click on the "+" sign, and then clicked on the "+" to open up the ams folder. I immediately deleted the "AmsRegistry" and "EndTransaction" by right-clicking on each, and selecting delete.
7. I right-clicked on the Ringers folder name, and selected the New File option. I went to my Ringtones folder with the ones I wanted to upload to my phone, and uploaded each GCD and MIDI file. Apparently, when you add a new file, it will list the name of the file in the Ringers folder, and loads it into the phone. If you see a .MID extension displayed on the cnts# MIDI file after you loaded it into the Ringers folder, you did not correctly rename your file. You must rename it, otherwise your phone will not recognize the MIDI file properly. Also, the ringtone will not display in the Downloads folder in your folder.
8. After all ringtones were added to the Ringers folder, I exited the BitPim program, unplugged the data cable, powered down the phone and powered it back up.
9. When the phone fully powered up, I went into the Downloads folder, and Voila! They were all there.
NOTE: Within the GCD syntax, it calls for a URL reference. I simply used the same one that was included with the ChittyBang.GCD file except I just made it match to the midi I was referencing. I don't believe the phone really uses the URL reference, so maybe it is not really necessary. All I know, if it works, don't fix it!!!
This has been a crueling process trying to figure this whole process out, but through trial and error, this seems to be working every time. I hope it works for everyone in this group. Thanks to those who feed me some essential pieces to put this all together. I am definitely on Cloud 9 that everything is finally working!
