it doesn't mean anything. videomail was not included in your original contract/etc so they can start charging for it if they want.

Videomail was never included in a vision package but sprint really wasn't monitoring who was and who was not a videomail cust. It is a seperate $5 charge for this service. Vision pictures gives you access to web, access to send still pictures, 100 txt msg/mth, and $5 credit for downloads. Premium gives you the web access, msgs, and $10/mth. Pro gives vision access, BC, pictures, and 100 messages.
Vidmail is included in sprintTV packages for mm phones but they run $25 primary or $15 sub.

Can't you just transfer video directly to your PC via data cable or no?

I'd like to second that question... can you transfer vids to the pc using bitpim or even snapmedia or something else? I can transfer pics with bitpim but no videos .
I just found out that I have been given grandfathered vision premium so I have the $10 credit, unlimited txt messaging, AND $0 pic messaging. All for free because of the old grandfathered stuff.

Vision, et. al, is an add on. Add-ons dont affect your contract, which is why you can add and remove the add-ons anytime you want without changing your contract date. Your minute plan is what is under contract...they cant change THAT, but they can change add-ons however they see fit.
Sux, but nothing can be done.

There was nothing ever in writing that Videomail was part of the $10/unlimted Vision plan. It was assumed by many of us that it would be included since picturemail was included. But Sprint decided they didn't want to give it to us (and they had the right not to). But the problem is their system didn't catch the error for months on many accounts and now that they have caught on to it it's just a matter of time before we all have to pay extra for it. It figures that many of us would be upset about having to all of a sudden pay for something that we had free for a long time. But I don't think we have the grounds to do anything about it.

so is it a flat rate or does the charge depend upon the amount of usage?
And I too would like to know if there is a way to transfer the video's to my Mac. I love the convenience of emailing the vids to grandparents and to myself but what happens if I change to a different service provider? I believe the videos are stored on Sprint's server and not actually in the emails so if I change service providers ever then I lose all those videos? Is this correct?

Well, I guess more and moer people are being charged for video.
http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50761&page=1&pp=15
It sux when things aren't written out plainly. Check the Sprint site under vision, it says we are "entitled" to use video mail with the picture pack.
--Another 2 cents.

"To get Sprint PCS Video Mail, you need a Sprint PCS Vision Video Phone and either a Sprint PCS Vision Picture Pack or the Sprint PCS Picture Mail option." - I went over that with a sprint rep and that's exactly how he explained it. With picture mail and unlimited internet, you are "entitled" (hence the quotes) to use the video mail option. How it was later explained by one of the "internet techs" (I believe that is what they called the guy) that with picture mail you CAN use video mail once you pay for the service (which isn't noted on the site, that's where my confiusion comes). It's funny because the rep spent about half an hour trying to figure it out before say I have 2 free months to figure out if I want the service.

Sprint goofed up my Vision, then started charging me for Video Mail.
My November 5 bill specifically lists Video Mail as $0. My December 5 and January 5 bills don't have a line item for it, but it was still working so I didn't complain.
In mid-January Sprint goofed up my Vision profile. When they fixed it, a dialog box came up demanding that I agree to the $5/mo charge. Sprint tech support specifically said I could go ahead and say yes, and that I still wouldn't be charged because the tech could see that Video Mail was already on my account.
Well of course, he lied. My February 5 bill shows a charge for Video Mail starting from that day in January. I called Customer Service, and of course the clueless Sprint rep didn't care about the fact that I was not charged until the snafu; she simply says, "Pay up."
So I cancelled Video Mail on all my lines. Sprint lost a lot more than it gained from that transaction.
I continue to emphasize that Sprint needs to offer a per-video alternative for Video Mail. The $5/mo charge is exorbitant for a capability used only rarely (e.g., once or twice a month), and it is unreasonable--almost to the point of false advertising--to publicly advertise video phones when the video capability costs too much to use.
Is this yet another area in which the other carriers like T-Mobile and Verizon are much better? I think T-Mobile doesn't charge anything for video mail, and Verizon only charges a small amount per video (plus, perhaps, a minute of usage).

It'd be nice if the Video Mail was included with Picture Mail, since technically other carriers can send pics/video via MMS (I could be wrong on this).

You are correct, at least of the GSM carriers.
Your idea is the simplest one. Alternatively, $5/mo for Video Mail would be acceptable to me if it covered all the lines on the account. What I really object to is not $5/mo, but up to $25/mo (for five lines).

It's a pain just to know that sprint didn't seem to care customers were using video mail until video phones started flying off the shelves. Now they see there is a few more dollars to make (imagine, $5 for each of it's 5 million customers.. that's 25 million without having to sweat or work any harder)...
The sad part is they don't think of it as earning $25 million for (or so, just an estimate, don't flame me for my math) they think of it as "hey, these people are using are equipment for free, we are LOSING $25 million dollars a year"
It's like the "normal" person tosses out a penny, that's what $25 million is to sprint in terms of the amount they make.
just my 25 million cents... lol

Did we determine what it costs to send one video to someone?

um, it's VERY straight-forward to get the movies off your phone via BitPim.
Data > Get Phone Data > (check)Wallpaper > OK
then wait (forever,) and select the movies you want (once they pop up, they are already on your PC,) and move them where you want via the 'save' option.
can people stop asking this already? It seems like there is a new videomail thread every week where someone answers this.
also, most people's videomail starting costing $5 several months ago, mine almost six months. There was NEVER any grandfathering on videomail, no how, no way. There was a 'gitch' in the system that allowed people to get it for free, and they basically have software that is going through and checking everyone's account to make them pay for it now. It was only a matter of time, and also it was never unclear or mis-represented. The second I started using videomail, it said I was going to be charged $5, but I was never actually charged until much later.
Plus the June '04 Vision Pack is nothing special... you may not even have unlimited SMS. You'd have to have it for several years to even get the $10 deal.

sorry if I sound snappy, but there's a [Search] button for a reason, and you should come across about 15 threads here and there talking about the 5500 and other phones using bitpim and the loss of videomail.
