I guess they will now allow you to upload pictures from you digitial camera, and with the better quality camera phones comming out, they want to protect the server from reaching capacity.

Does anyone know if the people who already have over 30MB be grandfathered to unlimited space or not? This is just a new thing, so if you have comments or know anything, feel free to post it.

I'm pretty sure that 30mb has to do with uploaded pics from digi cams, not your camera phone uploads

I hope they don't limit camera phone pictures. I was thinking since phones are going to have 2 megapixels, that it would cost them too much space.

I would be happy with 30 MB of just digital camera.

30mb of total consumed space on PictureMail website or 30mb of data transfer in PictureMail/month? Reason I ask is info given on *4 no longer says "Unlimited Data MB" but it used to. I know I posed this question once before and answer was nothing has changed but in light of this new info, let me pose it again. :D

I have a lousy VGA camera on my phone and I'm already getting close to the 30megs. I doubt we'll be grandfathered in on unlimited storage, either... considering that the FAQs on Picture Mail say the storage size is *currently* unlimited but may change at any time. I could understand maybe 1 gig maximum - we are paying extra for the service after all, and you can get 1 gig free from a variety of different email services, so it shouldn't be asking too much - but 30 megs would be insane. Let's hope this doesn't happen.

I already have used up over 200 MB's on my picturemail account. I recently purchased a Treo 650 so now I just transfer all of my pictures over via my SD card (which can hold about 15,000 pictures or 8 hours of continuous video) or HotSync.

With built in email client I really dont use the true picturemail service too often, so I won't be hurt too much by their 30 MB limit. I hate to see this limit though...

some info. Sprint made it possible to upload pictures from a PC to the picture album and so a change in data storage had to be made. Through April 1 the storage will still be unlimited but following this date the 30 mb limit will be compounded with whatever you are using as of that date. So what you have available after the 1st will be what you were using + 30 MB. The grandfathering will be done based on what you are using...not what you had available in the past (unl).

Yes but the reverse is also true. Say you already had stored 30mb you would have a total of 60 MB available I guess until they decided to change the rules.

Thats also what I was getting at. If you have 100 mb of pics u will have 130. So....take tons of useless pics and upload them to increase your available space?

That seems dumb.

The average VGA pic is 10k. 100k is 10 pics. 1 MB is 100 pics. I don't think the 30 MB limit will hurt me.

What is the average size of a 1.3 MP picture?

That will just allow people to upload tons and tons of junk pictures to increase they grandfathered space.

so that would hurt sprint because people are gonna upload crap that otherwise wouldn't be on the server.

Just another side of reflection, Even if they did limit us to 30mb, we should all be thrilled still with the service. I have had the chance to sample other wireless carriers from around the world, most have a maximum # of picture uploads of 250 - 1000, while sprint gives you up to 10,000 pictures on your account. very nice, viva usa...thats all I got to say :)

im glad someone is putting a positive spin on the situation but thirty megs is only about 300 pics because a vga pic is now about 100k. mega pixel phones take huge pics. my understanding is that you get 30 megs for new pics only. if you erase an old pic then the space is returned to the server. i may cancel pic mail after this. all the money i Pay should entitle Me to more than the ability to store 300 more pics. you watch and see. sprint will try and charge us for more space like $5 for thirty $10 for sixty or $15 for unlimited. i may just use the cable from now on like i do for the video,

have you checked on data cables and their ability to download pix from phone to pc
data cables work well even with freeware like bitpim... but i guess it depends on ur phone

Two megapixel JPG images off my old Nikon range between 600-800 kbs each, which would make me think the new A800 would only allow you to put up 45 images on PictureMail... you gotta be kidding me?! I would definitely have to reconsider the situation. Hopefully we'll be able to send unlimted per month, but the servers will only keep a history of the last 30 megs?

I had 6 pages of albums that just vanished and this is the second time that this has happend to me. :eek: I have not got a answer why or asked for anything for my inconveinece. Waste of my time to try to figure out why it's happening or trying to get a credit of some sort.

That is a good find. I was concerned that the overall space was going to be limited - regardless of where the pictures came from. Thanks for that update.

You can look at the post above. I finally am clear now that only uploads from the PC are limited. That does make me feel so much better.

but go on pictures.sprintpcs.com and play around there with the different links on there. It will be there.

...and your level of technical expertise. The customer needs to be able to navigate the filesystem of the phone, which *requires* a certain level of expertise...

so has anyone figured out with more certainty what this means?
if it means what i interpret it to mean, then the logical thing for people to do would be to start uploading as many MB or GB of data possible into your accounts. that doesn't seem quite right.

Sprint does a lot of things that look good on paper or seem right the ceo's. Maybe they hadn't thought that one out so well or maybe they were depending on the fact that not a lot of people read those little messages.

I swear the bunch of you over-analyze too much.

After the the date given , the uploads from your pc (digital cameras, whatever) will be limited to 30mb total. As of right now, you can upload unlimited from your pictures (at full resolution!), but when the date comes, you can only have 30mb on the server of your uploaded pc/mac pics.

Picturemail will remain unlimited, so go to town on it.

It is a bonus in every way! They even store the pics at FULL RESOLUTION, which if you have a 5 megapixel camera, is awesome. Especially as an additional back up.

So in a nutshell what we all get is an extra 30mb of personal photo storage for anything other than our phones, while the phones remain unlimted pics per month.

Text America only gives 25MB for free accounts. You have to remember everytime you send a picture mail it also uploads a copy of that photo to your Sprint Pics account. Sprint is only allowing 30MB of uploads form your PC, picture mail is still unlimited.

Sorry to make this matter complicated. I guess I may be one of those "over-analyzers". The wording of this is tricky though. Unlimited prior to 4/1/2005 and an "additional 30mb after that"? How are they keeping track of that? Is each picture tagged somehow with info about from where it came (subscriber's phone# vs. computer)? Also, what about timestamping? So, if you upload 5mb after 4/1 but then delete four mb, is Sprint keeping a separate space count specifically for pictures uploaded after that date? Seems like a lot of monitoring that they might not want to undertake. Anyway, just my thoughts!

I wonder if we will be able to send full-res pics FROM the upcoming phones with better resolution? The owners manual for tha A800 says it will come with a cable, which makes me wonder if that is how Sprint will force people to send full size pics. Unlimited 2megapixel pics over Vision would add up quickly.

Sprint 3G Techs(not all, but 2 of them I talked to) are confused about the situation, because they didn't have a clue about the 30meg limitation even taking effect :eyebrow: As for what I'm understading is exaclty what that link states... 30megs for desktop uploads and unlimited for phone uploads. That is really a great deal, because they didn't take anything away... they actually gave us more for free. Hopefully, it lasts. :D
