View Full Version : Faster data on the way??

I was considering switching to Cingular to take advantage of their EDGE data network, when I met a guy on an airplane who installs hardware for all the carriers. He told me he is currently installing equipment for Sprint that will make their data network "blow everyone else away." He indicated it would be complete in early spring.

He also had a treo 650 that could ALREADY connect to the network that he said was really fast for internet and data services. He was using a special test connection that is not available to the public.

Anyone else hear anything like this? .

thanks,

bj

Wow great story sounds too good to be true. What city would get this high speed.

He said it is going to be a nationwide launch. That probably means 60-80 cities right away and maor on line quickly.

I live in the northwest, so people up here may be in luck...

The fact that he said it's going to be a nationwide launch seems (to me) to add credibility to his story. Sprint is very brand-conscious about the fact that there network is the same everywhere nationwide, so most likely they would try to roll it out in most major parts of the country at the same time. Much different than Verizon's approach.

Not according to Sprint's timeline revealed during the "slide show"
about the Nextel merger.

It's initially rev 0

rel A isn't ready yet

Forgive my ignorance and/or laziness to use the search :D but what is rev 0 and A?

One article said that Sprint's EV-DO would cover 129 million pops (people, not subscribers) by mid-2005. Your source's projection of "early spring" is probably when all the hardware will be in place, not when Sprint actually begins offering the service.

But I don't see how his Treo 650 could possibly be using EV-DO already, unless his 650 was specifically upgraded (in hardware, and not just software?) to make use of EV-DO.

ah - phrasing is awkward on the phonescoop page about qualcomm -

Qualcomm Produces 3G Chip Samples

Tuesday, 1:09 PM source: Qualcomm

Qualcomm announced that sample chipsets for next generation UMTS and CDMA 2000 networks are now available. The company has produced a complete chipset solution to support HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), the faster revision of WCDMA (UMTS) that is capable of bursts up to 1.8 Mbps. The MSM6275 also supports legacy GSM networks, including GPRS and EDGE data. Qualcomm also produced samples of an CDMA 2000 EV-DO Revision A base station modem. Revision A increases EV-DO's speed both up and down link to bursts of 3.1 Mbps and 1.8 Mbps respectively. Due to advancements in both the protocol and technology, the new modems are capable of supporting up to 8 times the user capacity than first generation EV-DO modems. Cingular has already announced it will build out its 3G network using HSDPA, while both Verizon (which has launched EV-DO Rev. 0) and Sprint have mentioned EV-DO Rev. A for their next generation networks.

Ah thanks sloop. So Sprint is going to skip Rev 0 and go straight for A?

sloop
01-21-2005, 08:44 PM
that was my first reading but it may not the case - some say the standards for rev a have not been finalized - but qualcomm has chipsets that support it - i am unsure

If Qualcomm is first beginning to show samples of EV-DO rel A, it will not be incorporated into commercially available equipment for at least another year. Deployment and commercial offering by carriers would presumably be at least a year after that. Clearly, Sprint must be currently rolling out rel 0, not rel A.

rev 0 is my guess too - the chipsets on dmtech.com - are those production chipsets?

Even so, rev 0 will be better than what we have now. Being close to NYC, I really hope we'll have any version of EV-DO here soon.

i agree - i am just frustrated at knowing nothing from sprint - i understand their position - but if i am gonna spend $630 on a device i want to know they will support it on the ev-do network and what the cost will be - and they don't seem to take my threats seriously ;)

I agree! Sprint is leaving us in the dark. Here is the situation. I like CDMA/Sprint's network and don't want to leave. I am without contract and can leave at anytime. I want EV-DO. Verizon already has it in my area as well as phones to support it. Sprint will get EV-DO but we don't know when, where, what or how the devices will be supported once it's available or pricing. I'd like to be an early adopter, especially with something as ground breaking as EV-DO but,,,Sprint isn't ready to do that yet. It's getting frustrating hanging on and trusting and defending Sprint when we're used to them taking the lead and being out in front on these new technology features (picture phones, vision, wireless web, etc...) I'm betting that they'll do it better than Verizon which is the only thing keeping me hanging on still.

People just need to learn to not "jump" just because a new technology is out there.......give things time!

If EV-DO is soooooo important that you need it right away, then do what you must....just watch out for what you might be losing out on. All of these companies are always "1-UP"ing each other.

From what I understand, Sprint's upcoming EV-DO was what made them enticing for Nextel to merge with them. I think they are farther along with the network than even Verizon. Verizon started small and is charging lots to fund the rest of it. Sprint currently already has one of the best Data networks for phones. Nextel wants fast data, Sprint wants Nextels business appeal. I didn't even know anyone else was going to be offering EV-DO, but I'll be excited when it gets here.

Anyone think there's a chance of getting it Grandfathered?!?! :P

Verizon already offers commercially available EV-DO in 30 cities:

It was only launched in Atlanta to business users last september and just became available for personal phones in Atlanta only on Jan 7th 2005.. It even says so in the news link you gave. Like I said, they are starting small.. but I doubt they will have a huge growth spurt. I think Sprint has a better chance of popping up slightly later, but a lot stronger. The VCast stuff is in 30 cities, which is totally separate from EV-DO, also clearly stated in the link you gave me.

No, EV-DO is available in those 30 cities as of 1/7/05:

"As of Friday, January 7, 2005, Verizon Wireless' EV-DO network and its
BroadbandAccess service will be available in the following major metropolitan
areas."
