I see that Radio Shack has these two decent phones pretty cheap with new activation. Has anybody had both of these phones? If so, could you recommend one over the other? Or, can you recommend anything better at that price point.
Thanks!

I saw the same special and though about getting the VM4050 since my PM325 is pretty small. Sometimes I'd like to have a larger phone to be able to cradle with my neck when talking. http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=546746

The Toshiba also has a better earpiece, better reception (personal experience, and Mobileburn.com review) , more memory, better battery life, faster processor, better phone book (faster scrolling through numbers) , a SPEAKERPHONE, better ringer speaker (no problems with it blowing out) , and more customization options.
unless you want small size, get the Toshiba.

one thing though just because the toshiba is larger doesnt mean its any easier to cradle on your neck while talking. i find it very hard to keep it up there very long before it slips through my shoulder and cheek. i actually found the a680 to be easier to cradle cause of the angle it opens at i guess. Rf wise i think the a680 is better at least in my area. i cant keep a call long in my living room while talking on the 4050 but on the a680 it rarely drops a call. but i couldnt stick with the a680 i missed the 4050s screen too much. though i'm keeping the a680 as a backup

Samsung has a louder earpeice, better design, is built with quality materials, has a nicer external display complete with mirror, more animated user interface, is SMALLER, has voice signal technology...oh yeah, and did I mention it was smaller...?

The difference in volume between the two earpieces is nowhere near as present as the difference in clarity.
The Vm4050 is also built with quality materials- mine still looks brand new after numerous drops and tight situations. The hinge also clicks shut- something you may or may not like (ala Sanyo). The Vm4050 is overall a better phone, unless you prefer size (not that the 4050 is ungainly- it's smaller than the A700 and MM7400.)
Also, a "more animated" user interface does not equal a better user interface. There is no grid icon view, only a small list view for icons.

VM-4050 is a huge, ugly, bland phone...And you wonder why it doesn't sell well...?

It's comparable to the Sanyo 5500, and smaller than the 7400 and A700. The navy blue accent trim looks nice. You're getting desperate for criticism, so just drop it. This person doesn't need aesthetic help. Since I actually have owned both, sit this one out.

So lets see...Since you've owned both, now you are the one to make the decision on which one's better...? Sorry man, doesn't work that way
OP: The Samsung and Toshiba are both great at functioning at phones...It's really a matter if you'd rather have small size or larger size...Either way, you win ;)

I use the 4050 myself and I just recently helped someone else pick out the A680. It is true that the A680 is much smaller--more petite for females, easier to fit in a pocket for males. In comparison, the 4050 is rather...large.
I myself, of course, consider the size issue trivial compared to the amazing, wonderful 240x320 screen on the 4050, which still today blows away the screen on any other (non-Smart Device) Sprint phone.

But there is really no support for the 4050 if I'm correct? Are there games and applications that are compatible? If I'm wrong correct me.

Support is weak, perhaps simply because the 240x320 screen is so unusual. Some games and applications are available, but not a lot.

New plan Rick. Try them out for yourself. You can't ask here. There are a holes here that refuse to be subjective. They have they're objective.

There are about 30-40 games available (about 12 of which are actually good) , and 12 applications available directly through Sprint.
In addition to these, programs from the Reqwireless suite work as well (Webviewer, Emailviewer, Hotviewer, Gotmailviewer, which work wonderfully.)
In addition, sites like http://visionsamaritan.homeip.net offer additional games and downloads for your phone, some of which (such as Triple-X) work quite well on the 4050.
