Here you go. It sounds like you have an old case of spyware on yoru computer.

If you PM me, I can send you Ad-Aware Pro SE their newest program... Works great, and has a thing that can go in your system tray to monitor everything and stop spyware from installing.

Some programs like KaZaA Lite would edit your HOSTS file for you and clear out any "bad" URLs and send them to "localHost" (your PC). If you don't host IIS services on your PC, you'll get the about:blank screen or page could not be found. I love it because alot of popups spawn other popups and this helps stop them (not to mention the fact that I run two popup blockers).
Check your HOSTS file located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc.

Seriously, get Firefox.
Superior to Internet Explorer in almost every way. Mozilla is/was a piece of trash, but Firefox is totally where it's at. It's faster, it's better, and you will have fewer problems.

How does FireFox prevent you from getting SpyWare? SpyWare doesn't wind up on your PC just because you use IE. It can come from mail, clicking around foolishly, improper firewall settings (or lack of) and P2P networks.

I didn't say it will prevent you from getting spyware.

But its what the discussion was about. So I wanted to find out why FireFox is better in this case.

I was speaking in general, as you will have fewer problems.
99% of browser hijacks affect IE only and will not affect Firefox, so the about:blank problem probably wouldn't happen. I'm not sure as I've not looked into what it is specifically.

I'd suspect it's the HOSTS file but the only reason that IE is so "vulnerable" is because its a larger target.
Security reports show that XP is actually more secure than Linux now because MS spends so much time and money on patching and security fixes.

Yup. Same reasons Macs are less susceptible to viruses and trojans and hijacks and spyware - the writers of these programs go for the large market.
As long as Firefox remains only marginally popular, IE will have the majority of the problems. Let's not bring Linux into this. I think Linux is a POS as a desktop/client machine, and if you run a Linux server that has open holes you're a fool ;)

FireFox does not have ActiveX, which is a native IE feature that allows websites to download files to your computer without your permission. FireFox rejects websites requests to initiate ActiveX, and instead visibly prompts for your permission anytime a website attempts to do this. It also has an unbelievable pop-up blocker built-in, an RSS feed on the toolbar, and a Google search on the toolbar. You should definitely use it.
By the way, if that is a pic of you in your avatar, you may be the best looking smart girl I've ever seen.

Besides Google in the bar, you now have Yahoo, Amazon.com, Creative Commons, Dictionary.com, and eBay searches. :D Go Firefox! (love the tabbed browsing)
