I don't know about you all, but I like having freedom of speech, it seems that we cannot "say certain things" here at SPU because of "teenagers", Ok... I understand that much... which is cool an all. BUT, I would like to see an ADULT section where we don't have to be so "PG-13 ish" Adult section should require each member to give date of birth, and result in directing the user to their respective board, forum etc... Anyone agree .. simply reply with ":tu:" *crosses fingers*

Dude... That was the biggest waste of 30 seconds in my entire life for making me fall into reading this post.... Just clean up the language... I'm sure you're abled enough...

The problem with that is how would anyone know how old we really are ? Anyone can change the date they were born in our profiles when we sign up (I believe that asks us that).... So they'd have to have a credit card to verify, or SS#... Something like that.

WHAT ON EARTH would you need to say or discuss here and use the sort of language that any one including teens couldn't hear? Do you have to have a potty-mouth to get your points accross? I, like the others, say "NO"! Clean it up, be a responsible adult and talk like you have a 12th grade education! That's what impresses most people. Not explicit conversation.
On another topic, I don't think Dave intended this to be an Internet Dating forum either. It happens on occasion here, I'm sure, but it's not what most of us come here for.

Being this is a family style board meaning kids, adults and "in betweens" come here for SPCS info and what not. It is best to keep SU the way it is. SU isn't the only msg board on the internet. There are many adults sites out there, really!

I woudl have to agree with everyone else. I like it the way it is. having everything being so "ADULT" is the reason why HOFO is the way that it is, not saying that everyone is the same there, but there is too much drama there, and also if we allowed things to be an adult SEction, there would be a lot of FLAMMING. Let's keep SU clean justthe way it is. I don';t donate every month to see drama all the time. I donate because there is a lot of HArd work that goes into this site from it's MODS and DAVE, and it definitly SHOWS. Maybe an "Adult Section" would be okey for a Pilot program, but I don't see any Long Term benefits. And also, SprintUsers Bottom Line might as well be flushed. Hopefully you guys can see what I'm saying.

I don't know why an adult section would be needed or wanted on this board... the internet is KING of adult-related stuff... why search for the one board that tries to keep it civil and push for an adult corner?

if you can't find enough adult conversation and/or images on the web that you need it here at SU you need to talk mom and dad into disabling your NetNannny Software.

Why would you need an ADULT section of ANY kind in a CELLPHONE forum? the two are not related in any way.

want to talk phones come here

A challenge, then. Explain to me how using profanity to express a point, opinion, desire, question, etc., is an occasional necessity in argumentative discourse or casual conversation.

Your opinion is by all rights your own, and you are certainly entitled to it, as I am to mine.

I agree with BillyBathgate. We should have an adult only forum. There are some things you can say with perfectly clean language that you may rather not have teenagers or children see. Furthermore, and adult only forum (or category, whatever) would give mods a dump spot for otherwise edgy material--they could transfer questionable posts there, while not hindering expression in any way.

Simply put, Dave could make it against policy (as it already is) to post links to any business related site (especially porn) and all Dave would need to do is have everybody put in their date of birth and sign a release that promises they are 18, and that SU is not responsible for any action that arises in any part of this forum.

Man, people really get gang-banged in here for coming up with an original idea.

So what are you really trying to say? I'm lost! ( I guess I don't get it?) This is a Cellular Phone discussion board and I really don't know what you want? "socking daves doc"? LOL! I'm sure that would put a smile on Dave's face!

First of all... quit socking daves dock!

Why couldn't you say "agreeing with Dave", instead of having to change the spelling of your vulgarity just to get it past the filters? You are so Hell-bent on using a profanity that you twist the spelling to keep from being forced to use a non-profane term. I don't get that.

I have a potty mouth. I admit that. But, I also know when to curtail the use of my, shall we say, flowery speech. This is one of those places.

As for the whole "freedom of speech" thing, you don't have that here. It's the same as going to someones house, and then saying something to tick them off...they can throw you out if they want to. This is Dave's house, not ours...if he pulled the plug tomorrow, you would have NO SAY IN THE MATTER. I'm sure you'll say I'm "agreeing with Dave" or whatever colorful term you prefer to use, but in reality, what I'm saying is true, no matter how unpopular the truth may be.

Let's not get too heated about this issue... Perhaps if there is a large need for such an area we can create a section that is for "adults" only. But as far as getting signed release forms etc - that would create way too much paperwork and there would be no way to even validate the information.

How would you expect this section to be setup? Completely hidden from the site and someone would have to request that a MOD give them access? Or list the title of the forum in the main index and have a link to click and request access? Then we would have to come up with some guidelines... What can be said, what should be avoided, etc? Let's let this topic continue for a week or so and see where it goes.

I am not opposed to making changes as long as the changes are not illegal and disrespectful to others.

I think it would be fun.... If it is hidden from the main site, those that dont want to look dont have to.... What would need to be monitered as far as what can and cant be said? Seems to reason, that anything that couldnt be said "here" would be said "there". (With the exception of the normal things, race, religion, sexual orientation bashing.....)

Just my opinion

1. We don't need an adult section in order for you (and others) to act like children. Evidenced above post.

2. What would you post if we did have an adult section? I can guarantee it would be worse than the above, and it's all fine, but this is the wrong place for it.

3. "Adult" conversation (as you put it) meaning what? So you can swear and that? There's a great place for that already on the net. Dboogie is a moderator there. (not kidding)

4. Discussion about Dave's sex life would give me nightmares. Please refrain!

5. The censors are actually funny in a way. Like duck cheney. Everyone knows what you are really saying but it makes it even more humerous, IMO.

Just My $0.02. Actually that was more like $0.50, but you get the idea.

This forum isn't a public service or a right, it's a private internet board owned and run by private individuals. They have no obligation to grant you "Freedom of speech" or any such silliness.

When you're here, you play by the owners' rules. This is their house, and it's rude to complain that they don't give you enough.

It's what some like to call N.I.M.B.Y. - Not In My BackYard. Liquor stores are fine for some, but most wouldn't want one to open next door to them. An adult forum can be a great thing for exchanging ideas, dirtytalk, and whatnot, but this isn't the place for it.

And if everybody is throwing these $.02's around, collect them in a jar, and use them to help host this site we all see so fit to frequent...

Agreed. The only reason I said 2 cents is because it seems to be the popular thing to say around here. LOL

I see what you are saying about back yards. There is a park behind my house. My kids love it. Just because its there doesnt mean they get to (or have to in this case) play there every single day. Just a thought for you to consider. Im not trying to change your mind, just trying to shed light on the other point of view.

I think it would be great if you could make it hidden from the site Dave, is that possible? Also, I think since people have already signed up and submitted their ages and everything, some sort of script or filter could actually divide up the teenie boppers from the senior citizens... for example; yahoo uses a filter for adult content, but doesn't tell the user until they try and access a certain part of the site (adult content)m, I'm sure this can be done.

The presence of such a forum would only inspire people to be idiots. It would quickly get libelous and be filled with junk. This is a site about Sprint PCS, and it already has an offtopic forum.. IMO this isn't the place to be vulgar or insult people.

I don't think so. I go to said site from time to time and haven't seen anything there. I think this was BillyBathGate's own idea, and it's NOT a bad idea, I just think it doesnt work well in practice. It gets TOO trashy or TOO viscious. Like johnnythan said about the dynamics of the board.

Besides, it's complicated. If you create such a section, what do you let people say and not say? Where do you draw the line?

At the end of the day, this is a Sprint Users forum. Don't get me wrong, I'm very glad we have a watercooler. But I think that suffices for the things that don't fit elsewhere.

And props, Billy, because any suggestions that gets us thinking and discussing is constructive in the process, even if the change is not ultimately adopted. Or maybe it will be. That's up to Dave.

I still stand by my original feeling. I don't want trash-talk here, it only makes people uncomfortable and stressed. It opens the door to other bad ideas and HABBITS,... things I'm sure go on in the "clubs". A member of my family owns a Rock/Dance club in the city (Detroit). The police are there almost everynight, because of what goes on "In the club" by the patrons! People as such, need to learn there is a time and a place for such behavior. As with anyone with a job in the real world, a job that is deemed "legal" in the eyes of the law, we'd understand that conducting yourself in that manner in that place of business is wrong and you'd be fired and/or arrested. This is a great Forum, one which I tend to glance at almost everytime I'm on the Internet. It's fun, cost little or nothing. We can share good, wholesome thoughts and ideas and share information on stuff we know about, including the in's- and out's of Sprint, their service, their rate plans, and their forthcoming upgrades. Sorry, Julie and Billy, I don't agree with either of you. My vote is take the "R" and "X" rated thoughts, ideas, or what ever else you want to call them, elsewhere.

I respect your thoughts... but you people arent understanding!!! NO ONE is going to make you go there, post, look, read, scream, rant, WHATEVER. You are all adults... if you chose to click the link and read, great. NO one will make you...

On that note... I dont really care if the forum exists or not. I'm just trying to get the point across that NO one will make anyone do anything they dont want. We arent a bunch of lemmings..... Geez.

Julie, I don't think anyone is saying they'll be offended by what goes on in that forum.

We're saying it will be bad for the forum, bad for how people view the forum, and bad for the rest of the forum. Its presence would *encourage* idiocy, rudeness, and immature forum members to act out simply because it's allowed.

It would do nothing for the forum but make it a joke, and Dave has no reason to put in such a forum.

Point taken. However, I got the impression from Dave's post that it would be private access... I believe he mentioned PMing the moderators for a link or passcode or such. I see what you mean about nastyness carrying over to the main forum... but that already happens. Check the general board to learn of one poster's romantic evening last night... complete with animated graphics. Its inevitable... Even on the cleanest of forums.

But everyone has to understand that there are advertisers on this site. Would they approve of such content, and if they don't, would they pull their advertising money and take it elsewhere?

It's not as simple as a "don't click it if you don't want to read it" thing. The purpose of this site is to discuss SprintPCS. The argument can be made that the watercooler section is nothing more than unecessary and unrelated (to the mission of SU) site clutter. And now a few people are advocating an "adults only" section so they can act like children? Sheesh!

Furthermore, don't you think a 14 yeard old could pretty easily circumvent any age-restriction by just claiming to have a birthdate that makes him or her old enough? Or do we suggest Dave also get a credit card age verification thing going?

There are enough places where people can go right now and discuss things full of profanity and whatever else. Why does it need to be here too?

Sprint Users or Adult forums...?

Go else where if that's what you want, this forum is not for anything more than discussing Sprint PCS, and you are all lucky you even have the watercooler...

What on earth would anyone need to talk about on a cell phone forum that's R or X rated?

Nailin'M
01-02-2005, 04:15 PM
Gotta say....I do agree with that statement. This site is called SprintUsers. Even if a user is 15-16, they are welcome here, according to the subtitle, "by the users, for the users". For someone to ask that we be allowed to use profanity is a can of worms that I'm sure, with more thought, Dave would not want opened. And why do it? So "socking docks" could be read outright? I'm all about choices but, to have a "special-access" thread, you need something better than these lame-ass excuses to why it's needed. There is nothing R rated about a cell phone discussions so, I can't see where this thread would even fit. It would undoubtedly be include other topics so, why should material-lacking, profanity-filled BS reside at SU?

On the brighter side, you could always front your money and open your own site.

You were NOT talking about freedom of speech Billy. You were talking about a place to curse and flame other members because aside from those two things you can already say pretty much whatever you want here now. Just let it go man and take the links SL4 is offering...and it's not nice to talk about peoples mothers no matter what kind of forum you're on.

So, the only entity's needs that would serve would be *yours*. It would not be good for the forum, it would not be good for the community, and no one really cares what you think about davec8100 or SL4.

This board does not need a forum that exists solely to let you whine and complain. Do that in your own house, on your own forum, in your own time. We don't need to hear it.

I'll say it again.. the only person it would be good for is *you*. It is not in the best interests of the forum.

I know this has been beat to death... and I hate to beat a dead horse...but...

An "adult" section? I've seen where this can go, and it's not good. Over on Jeeps Unlimited (http://jeepsunlimited.com/forums) there's a section called e-Dodgeball. Needless to say, the entire space is just a complete waste of database space. I don't post on the site much, and never in that section. Sure, the profanity filter still applies, but constant member bashing, all the time just doesn't make any sense. Keep the entire forum the way it is, I've never had a single problem with it.

And just the thought of a site where there are no "moderators" and true "freedom of speech" and promises of "no bans" doesn't make any sense either.

SprintUsers.com was created in January 2002 as a resource for users of Sprint PCS products and services to learn about and share information. We have cll phone reviews, Cellular Accessories, Downloads, PDA reviews, Ringtones, all of the latest Sprint PCS news and information, an area where you can find help in creating a ring tone or custom image for you phone, and so much more. The most popular section is the message board where visitors can read and write messages, ask questions, and get advice about their cellular phone from other users.
