mm-7400 TV LIVE?

hey all. im about to get a new phone, and im really liking the 7400. but im a little confused about the tv thing. first off, is it live tv, or is it just pre-recorded clips? im hoping its live, so when im bored at work, i can watch real tv. another question: its $25 a month to get the tv thing. does that include all channels? or is it just a few channels, and you have to pay to get more.

I'm on a two month's trial but customer service said I'd have to pay more to actually watch something. They said I'm basically paying for the service and will have to pay more for the actual channels, is that true?

thats what im wondering. from the demo on sprints site, im understanding that it is definetly not live tv, just clips. and for $25 a month, you get sprint tv, which is basically just basic news, sports, weather, etc. if you want other channels, like cnn, the weather channel, discovery, etc.

thats what i understand it as. not as good as i thought it was going to be, but i still might go for it for a month or two to see what its like. can anyone else can clarify it for us?

I rarely get to watch TV and I'm an avid news watcher so it works out great for me. I can't stand not knowing whats going on in the world so I just fire up Sprint TV and get my fix.

I've got both Mobitv and CNN To Go. I'm using a 7400 to view them. The Mobitv service is live. The CNN service is clips (pre-recorded - generally about 2 minutes each).

I find it very useful for catching up on the news. The only Mobitv channels I watch are MSNBC, CNBC and ABC News. The other channels seem to be all has beens or re-runs of guys building choppers or ladies redecorating houses.

The CNN To Go is supposed to have a higher video quality. I don't notice the difference much between this and Mobitv -- but I do like the CNN content even though it seems like foreign correspondents are filing the reports.

It's a worthwhile addition and very easy to cancel (can be done online).

The confusion here is between Sprint TV and MobiTV. This is my understanding:

- Sprint TV is the multimedia service that Sprint officially pushes. Sprint's $25/mo Multimedia Pack includes Sprint TV. Sprint TV is not live, but rather consists of canned clips, perhaps refreshed each business day. Sprint TV runs at 15 frame per second. The Multimedia Pack only includes "basic" Sprint TV channels; other, perhaps more interesting, channels cost extra. Note, however, that the Multimedia Pack also includes Picture Mail and Video Mail.

- MobiTV is simply a Java application that costs $10/mo. It already includes a good set of channels, without need for further purchases. At least some channels are live. MobiTV can be partially or totally financed by your Pack's download credit. So, for example, someone with the Premium Pack ($15/mo) can use its $10/mo download credit to get MobiTV for free! Similarly, someone with the Picture Pack (also $15/mo) can use its $5/mo download credit to cut the price of MobiTV in half.

Some customers report that MobiTV is limited to only 5 frames per second, even on multimedia-capable phones. Other customers assert that MobiTV is giving them the full 15 fps.

Anyone have more definitive information?

This is great to know! Does Srint automatically apply this free service if you don't download anything for a given a month, so that basically they just consider that application (e.g. CNN, MobiTV, Sprint TV) as your alloted free download for the month if you decide to keep it in your phone?

wrt to the frame speed - I think it's close but the MM viewer appears faster. Really the only way I can judge is by watching lips move and see which appear more in synch. Usually CNN to Go appears more in synch.

Another issue is that MobiTv has low volume while the MM channels are louder.

MobiTV, like many other Java applications available from Sprint, is by subscription. You subscribe to it--in this case for $10/mo--and it is then automatically added to your bill until you explicitly cancel it. If your Vision Pack includes a download credit, the credit will be automatically applied if you have any download charges for the month, including MobiTV or any other Java application.

So I think the answer to your question is yes. If, for example, you have the Premium Pack (which includes a $10/mo download credit), you can simply subscribe to MobiTV. The MobiTV subscription will use up your download credit but won't cost you anything more.

Sprint TV, as I understand it, is completely different. It is a feature on your line--the Multimedia Pack--and not a downloadable application at all. As far as I know, the only way to get Sprint TV is to subscribe to the $25/mo Multimedia Pack. And even then, as someone pointed out, the most desirable channels cost extra.

ok, so to me, MobiTV is looking like the better way to go. more channels, live tv, etc. a few questions about that. im assuming you have to have vision to get that right? what about the $25 multimedia pack, how much of a discount comes with that? the reason why im asking, is because when i get my 7400, i want vision, picture mail, and video mail. so if i get the picture pack, i still have to pay $5 more a month for video mail, and the $25 pack comes with it.

Sprint's documentation implies that the $25/mo multimedia pack comes with no download credit. That is, the multimedia pack is simply Vision + SMS + Picture Mail + Video Mail + (basic) Sprint TV.

For that same $25/mo, you can essentially get MobiTV instead of Sprint TV. $15/mo Picture Pack, $5/mo Video Mail, then $10/mo (- $5/mo download credit) for MobiTV. Only 100 SMS messages, I think, though, instead of unlimited.

hey, thats a good idea, thanks. i want to try mobitv, so ill just do the $15 picture pack and add on video mail. and then mobitv will be free basically with the $10 credit.

You do not have to get the multimedia pack to get sprint tv or any of the premium channels. you can add it like any other app. sprint tv is 9.99 a month, while premium channels range from about 3-6 dollars a month. you can just get one premium channel if you desire without buying sprint tv. mobi tv only runs about 5 frames per second on the 7400 making it unwatchabe for me....

eman is right, my mistake. I now see that an MM7400 owner can purchase Sprint TV separately for $10/mo. It apparently then qualifies for any download credit your Vision Pack may have. CNNtoGo and Fox Sports multimedia channels (for Sprint TV) are $5/mo each. But these are canned clips, right?

Does MobiTV include a live Fox Sports channel? (I'll have to check out all the channels carefully the next time I see my nephew, for whom I bought the MM7400.)

EDIT: In another thread, someone reports that MobiTV includes Fox Sports, Vegas Sports, and Vegas Score Line.
