I just got off the phone with Sprint to verify my order of the PPC-6600 that is going to replace my cracked screen on my 6601. They said that the phone will be available to order on Jan 25th...or by the end of the last week of Jan for sure.
We will see, but they did say it was confirmed.

I will be activating my FOURTH t650 - lousy sound quality but wonderful everything else. And yes I know there is a fix out there but I'm techy illiterate. Your enthusiasm for the 6600 is catchy. Questions: Is the problem with sound as far reaching as the Treo's? Should I just keep trading treos until the 6600 comes out? Any input would be appreciated.

Either apply the sound patch or wait another couple of days for P1s official update that supposedly comes out on the 5th. No word yet on any update schedule for the Audiovox's beep of death. Hopefully by the end of the month when the 6600 is released.

That's good news, but always take Sprint's estimates with a grain of salt. Any word on whether the bug fix for the 6601 will be released before that date or if the 6600 will have the ROM issues fixed upon shipping?

If they don't fix the bugs that were on the 6601, I won't be buying a 6600. I really hope that Audiovox gets it right this time. I really like that they can use EV-DO once it comes out.

Bjork....if you are looking the "perfect" phone, you will never have a phone to even make a call on.
Do you really believe that P1 "got it right this time" with the 650????? Just look at the first page of topics on the 650 forum at TreoCentral ( http://discuss.treocentral.com/forumdisplay.php?f=70 )and I don't believe you could honestly answer yes. I agree they did some cool things with the 650, but they fell far short of "getting it right this time".
As we have noted before...the 650 has issues and the 660x has issues. You claim over and over to be fair and balanced, yet you never mention the 650 issues (only potential solutions or benefits) when you continually mention the slew of bugs and issues with the 660x that we have gone over time and again.
But as for the issues issues the the 660x, there really are not that many:
The disconnecting beep. This has been greatly reduced. Many of us are starting to think this is a network issue (or at least large part of the blame) rather than a phone issue, as the beep dropped drastically the same weekend that the 650 started allowing outgoing calls while roaming for many of the users with this problem.
The bluetooth issues with headsets is being addressed and will be updated with an update....hopefully very shortly. Other than that the BT works really good with everything else. I currently use it with my iTrek GPS, BT keyboard, BT travel mouse, BT syncing with my laptop, etc...
As for the claims of keyboard problems...this is mostly repeated by users who do not have a device. This issues are far and between with most users confirming it is built well and solid. I love the urban legend that all the keyboards are falling off all the phones! :hee:
Now the list of issues that the 650 potential customer should be aware of:
Memory issues. Only 21 mb available memory for internal mem required programs. It writes in large blocks so the limited memory it does have goes a lot faster than it did on the 600. Cannot load a program larger than 10 mbs, which could be an issue with a program with a large database...or potentially a GPS program with a large or detailed map, etc....
Though it appears it is being addressed, some users are still have problems making out going calls while roaming.
No wifi support, except for user based solutions that are still spotty and require a hard reset.
As the 660x has isolated keyboard issues, the 650 has isolated issues with keys falling off.
Sound issues. There is now a patch to help address this issue. It has helped most users, but others are still having to deal with this challenge.
See that is not hard....it even works the same way when you mention benefits of one phone and then the other too... .. The bottom line is to offer info to help, not convert or persuade, the user who is trying to decide where to best spend his hard earned money to suite his needs.

I've NEVER claimed that the 650 was perfect. I returned mine because I wasn't happy with it. I also think that I'm the only one here who has owned both devices, not just played with one in a store or read what someone else said on some blog. Please correct me if you actually do own a 650. :)

Yup...with Sprint you pay just on monthly price and thats it for data. Unlike some other carriers, especially overseas, it does not come out of your monthly voice minutes...that is totally seperate.
It is claimed to be "unlimited" but does have some strings attached. As it appears that their unlimited ceiling is around a gig of traffic in a month's time. As you mentioned you are officially not suppose to hook up your computer with it as well.
I hope this helps.

Yes. There are several threads on several forums about keyboard issues. Some users say they have issues. Most say it loosens over time but locks in the up and down position just fine. Some say they get cosmetic scratches on the back of the screen when extended. While most say that is well built and solid. Again...nothing more than the expect law of averages for the amount of units in the market today. For more details, please read one of my other 14 posts responding directly to this same claim from you.
GREAT! I haven't heard P1 addressed this yet...this awesome news!!!! I have loads of co-workers with the 650 who would love the patch for the 512kb block hog, as they call it. They are always complaining about running out of room. Please post it so I can share it with them...I will be their hero!
Nope, and never claimed to have a 650, but work with them every day at work with other co-workers, so I have a pretty good feel for the unit, it's benefits, and it's challenges.

Because of my extensive travelling this was even a concern for me when I bought Treo 600 last year as well....but Sprint's digital roam is vast and by far the most comprehensive than any other carrier.
The only drawback to Digital Roaming is you cannot use Vision, so no data, internet, or email....but you get to make calls. I pay $5 a month to have half of minutes as roaming minutes if I need it. So with my 2,000 minute plan I can talk for 1,000 minute while roaming without any extra per minute fees.

i talked to several people while on campus today, and learned a few things about the 6600 ...
- Official release date is simply "end of January"
- It will be exactly the same as the 6601, except for the camera (i.e. no bugfixes)
- EV-DO compatibility looks real good
btw, i just ordered my 6601 today. i decided to go ahead and get the non-camera version because i have never been impressed with sub-megapixel camera pictures. as soon as non-PDA EVDO phones arrive that have 1.3+ MP cameras, i'll just get one of those for pics.

I'm pretty sure the patch does not exist, because if it did, WE would know about it. This is one of the 650s biggest problems. I think the fix he was talking about was PalmOne sending free 128MB SD cards to Treo 650 users.

I figured there wasn't fix available and that he was just spewing, but wanted to make sure and to give bjork the benefit of the doubt on the validity of his word.
Either it exists or he was flat out lying in an attempt to prove a point....which is not cool in any forum by any standards.. :td: ..especially with an issue as big and serious as this...... and will discredit any other claims made in a similiar fansion from him in the future as far as I am personally concerned.......though for the sake of my treo friends, I really do hope I am wrong and more than willing to admit it if I am.

Like your claim of ALREADY HAVING A 6600?
What I said was that P1 already had a fix for the 512KB memory block issue. That was what they claimed at CES. Once P1 finished a patch, it must be sent to Sprint to be evaluated and tweaked (if desired) before it's released to the public. I explained all of that already, but you must have forgotten.

Bjork....yes as you have pointed out in 2 or 3 threads already, out of the hundreds of my posts, I did mistype 6600 instead of 660x in a single post..and knowing my typing challenges....probably a second post lurking in the shadows.....I will be sure to be more careful. And just for your clarification, yet again, I do only have the 6601 (actually not even that until the 6600 arrives as I just sent my phone back...ug...withdraws!!!)
You only said that P1 had a fix. I did not forget, I simply missed any other posts you made about this development (please link for more information). I did do a LOT of research based on your information. I couldn't find anything at P1. No one new anything about it at TreoCentral. Not even the Admins here at SprintUsers.com knew anything about it.
I always to try to mention fixes when talking about challenges so the potential user has a realistic idea of how long they may have to deal with that specific bug or manufacturer oversight. You flew up a single comment to claim I was not being fair and balanced because I did not mention this fix, when apparently, from P1 to TreoCentral to SprintUsers, no one but you knew about it. How could I have posted information No One knew about?
I immediately recognized this was great news and was excited about the news and in a sincere desire to help many of my Treo friends was trying to find it. But given the tone and non details of your comment and unusual non response to it while posting to others, it did appear to be false or at least exagerated.
Do you have any informational links about this fix that P1 has claimed to have completed and passed onto the carriers as this would also be big news?

Ben....as you know I frequent several message boards and it is funny that this is the only board I ever have any issues like I do....heck even at TreoCentral, a true Treo Loyalist enviroment, there is always a fair and balanced view on all phones, as a rule of thumb. In all the others boards I hang aroudn on a regular basis my posts are accepted for what they are.
Sometimes here I feel like I have to fight just to make sure my posts are not respresented, combat one sided posts or with only half the info included, have to watch EVERY period, 0, or x I type (or mistype :) ) or I am called a liar, or am called on to justify trying to simply help others get a full picture before they spend hundreds of dollars of hard earned money.
But there are also some great people here too, which why I stick around. :waycool:

Only what I've already posted. P1 was very tight-lipped at CES and would only say that an update was given to Sprint that was prior to the 1/5 date that I had previously quoted from my source that Ben had a hissy fit over.
It's speculated that the fix includes P1's BT DUN update, the sound patch and some various minor tweaks. No one knows if this update will address the memory issue or not.

Actually I talked with Business Sales yesterday that checked two levels up with managers and with the warehouse and they all confirmed that the 6600 will not be available until late Feb "as it stands now". So I opted to have the 6601, and that is what is being shipped for me.
I am trying to call the store he ordered his 6600 to see if I can, but no one will answer yet. This will be cool if they can, but I think a floor associate didn't know the difference between the 6600 and the 6601. What is strange too is Business Sales says that currently both are not available retail yet.
In fact business sales said that even if I got a 6600 they couldn't activate it because there is nothing in their system to do that with yet. Weird.

Hobbes, my 6601 is fabulous thus far, but I'm not used to the membrane dimpled keyboard. I always liked to use a stylus tipped thick pen. I'm somewhat overwhelmed with all the features, and still learning my way around.
I love the ability to hand write or type notes attached to each phone call. The speed tonight was between 139 and 142 kbps. I'm still tweaking it because it came with a different phone number and I had to reprogram it manually, after swapping ESN's on my account, and set up IE to bypass the proxy server. So far so good. It may prove to be a keeper,...., till someone from Verizon tries to blow me aay with EVDO ;)
I'll copy and paste this on PDAphonehome

Glad to hear you are enjoying it.....I know what you mean about coming from the Treo and being totally overwhelmed by all the features and many have a little learning curve while adjusting to the new OS.
As for the keyboard, many find that it takes some getting use to as well, but learn to really like it once they do. I personally liked the layout right off the bat....but then again many of my friends say Im out of the norm anyways. =)

Honestly, I've been waiting and waiting for this darn phone to come out (ppc-6600) and I'm getting tired of it. I'm considering just getting the T650 instead, despite my reservations regarding the Palm OS. This phone needs to come out. I understand all the bugs and other issues that are being had, and I think they are just doing more fixes, hence the delay. In fact, I expected this to happen because of the bug problems. They always experiment on those that are willing to buy it first. Now, The 6601 has no camera, as the 6600 does...that is the major hardware difference. Software wise, I expect they will be putting in a bunch of fixes and patches, hence the delay. I'm looking forward to replacing my Samsung PDA phone...I dislike the issues it has, and how limited it is. Yes the IR is nice, but i'd rather have a card slot, and some other stuff. The PPC-6600 should fix my issues, IF it would come out. So the date is late feb now? It seems that they keep kicking the date back each time we get close enough to start salivating. If this phone doesn't come out soon, I think I'll drive to Audiovox and steal one from the crates that are waiting to ship out.
Ranting aside, I think it'll be worth the wait. :)

Do we know for certain that the delay factor includes fixing PPC6601 bugs? And, what bugs? My phone has no bugs. Has Audiovox said anything?

Nope...Unless they have seen some announcement I missed (which with how much I am on the road is always possible) anything stated by anyone is purely guessing, stating their hypothesis, bashing, or simply wishing.

I hope the one I ordered yesterday has no problems like yours doesn't! ;)

That is the bummer about this world is that there is no perfect phone. :D
Every phone has its issues and challenges. I personally have found that the challenges with the 6601 are far easier to live with than the challenges the 650 would present me individually while attempting to meet the demands of the responsibilities of my job.
If you have done a little research, read through these forums, then bought your phone, I am sure you are going to be happy with whatever phone you bought!

Oh I have researched this phone for over a year.......... seriously. I have been a ppc user for more than 4........... I just know some of them have been buggier than others. I also hope it doesn't take WEEKS to get it! :)
btw. you have been a huge help on a couple forums, and I really appreciate that!

Ok - I am in need of some suggestions. I live in Milwaukee, WI and travel for work a lot. I currently have the VM4500 and also carry a Palm T3. I have been seriously looking at the t650 and the 6601. I would love to drop the T3 and go with an all in one pda/phone. The problem i have is that the t650 is dual digital and does not roam in analog where upper WI is mostly analog. Is the 6600 analog/digital? Or will the t650 roam onto cingular's digital network? I have played with the t650 and I like it, but I need COVERAGE! Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

The 660x is digital dual-band as well, so you'll be out of luck w/ either if you need to roam. If you're in that many places that don't get a digital signal, then maybe GSM is for you.

Or you could go with an IPaq h6315 from T-Mobile <ducking for cover> it is a quad band GSM PPC phone, and should roam nicely, but with a hard handoff as usual.
Btw, at this time the T-mobile version of thePPC6601 is only sold in Germany

Thanks. At this point, I might just wait until the 6600 comes out. I heard of something that SprintPCS will soon have similar to a SIM. If that is true, then I can switch between my vm4500 and which ever PDA phone I choose when traveling. One thing that makes me mad is P1 only offers a trade-up value of $50 plus I have to send in my T3. My T3 is 4 months old and worth a lot more than $50.00.
Oh Well, anyone interested in a Palm Tungsten T3?

The SIM is one of GSM phones' best hardware features. Having an expensive PPC6601 ruined while skiing, hunting, skydiving, or whatever your outdoors passion maybe is not a good idea. Hell, even while doing backyard cleanup I'm afraid to carry my PPC. But with a SIM, or similar, card you can use your cheap back up phone on rough terrain, and your PPC at home and in business environment.

Exactly! Not to mention better coverage when traveling. I want to say this technology will be called 3G or something like that. I am not certain though.

Well, 3G or 3rd generation wireless, is an inclusive term. It includes EDGE and EVDO technologies alike. Of course 1xrtt claimed to be 3G, but it's more like 2.5G

This is true....but with a twist....I was talking with a National Sprint Sales Manager and he explained to me. Instead of having a hardware SIM as the GSM phones have, Sprint will offer a Software SIM. So this is how it will work. Every user has a unique name (first initial, last name, and number if needed to with other with same name...i.e. Jdoe1234). Now instead of switching a hardware card, you simply assign that phone your user ID.
You can do with with any phone.....so if you are on a business trip and your phone falls in the toilet and is accidentally flushed, then you can borrow your brother-in-laws phone that happens to live two blocks from your hotel...and then transfer it back to his account when you leave to go back home.
All the same benefits and no worries about losing the hardware SIM, or having it stolen, or having it ruined.
