i heard the japanese ones will be able to play all games from any country. but when the u.s. version comes out, it wont. i still dont see paying that much. i think i will wait until may and get it for $199.

Been watching and waiting for this for a couple of years. I bought a GBA SP when it first came out and played it continous for maybe 3 months. Biggest waste of money for me ever. Nothing but kiddie games except for my Activision Anthology game I never play anything else. Hype is big for the Nintendo DS but after seeing the PSP v.s. DS Ridge Racer games the choice is easy. Not to mention I always wanted a movie player like the Creative brand one. Looks like late March is the new date they are saying for the PSP arrival. Seems like 10 years away to me!!
The details says that it accepts Memory Sticks and its supposed to be a media player. I wonder if it'll play mp3s and mpegs...

I would think so too, but usually the Japanese gadgets work everywhere.
Check this video out. Can someone translate?

.
I looked at a CD/MP3 player in Target and Sony converts the MP3 to their format. Sony owns one of the bigger record labels- Columbia House.

I just can't believe it has a 1.4g HD in it- thats friggin awesome!
As well as USB 2.0 [and I think firewire]! I think it also has 802.11b in it too.

It does not have 1.4 GB HD in it. I believe it has only 32 MB of on-board memory. It also does not have firewire. It does have 802.11b and a Memory Stick Pro Duo port on the lower left side.

Correct, no HD. But who cares? That would just drive the price up and mean more moving parts = more things to break. I like the Memory Stick on the side and the fact that it has an actual USB port. I'd love to see someone hack this thing!
Anyone know an "official" price? For US I heard $199, $299 and the latest, $350.

Nice find. I like the side-by-side of the PSP and the Lynx. I miss my old Lynx, but this thing, with the 4" screen just rules the roost.

Does it have a full size USB port. I thought it had a little plug that plugs in and at the end of the cable was a USB connector but not the one that actually plugs into the device. Like a USB printer!

EH - I think I was reading the specs wrong... Its a USB connection - to be connected to a PC. I don't know what other functionality it servers other than giving you access to the Memory stick. Essentially turning the PSP into a drive. Largest MS Duo available is 512mb, so it doesn't sound like you'll be watching too many movies on this thing.
from what i understand about the PSP is that it can play MPEG's from the Memory Stick Duo (the smaller ones that cost EVEN MORE THAN THE OVER PRICED MEMORY STICKS) and they do not play without placing the moves in particular folders and naming them in a particular name of numbers without spaces. As for MP3s, the PSP will play MP3's in its native form without using Sonys ATrac software which is a plus but again only on the Duo Sticks. As for the region codes, Sony says they will not be testing software for different regions so some games will work in other regions but movies on the UMD disks will be region locked. Just knowing how hard it is to get a movie on a Duo sounds like more trouble than its worth, besides how big are Duos these days anyhow? 512? and how much are they? how big of a video can u put on it anyhow? UMD movies? Personally i dont think i will be buying UMD movies only to be able to play it on a PSP. ill stick with the DVD.

If it's a standard USB connection, I know I've seen up to 4Gb USB thumbdrives, and that's be more than enough to store mp3, and mpeg data to view on this thing...

The device is WiFi enabled - if it will allow you to browse the web, I'm sure you'll have access to anything.

DUOs only go up to 512 right now and I'm sure once the PSPs come out, the DUOs will drop in price, if only by $10. The PSP works in Sony's favor to help mainstream DUOs into the marketplace.
I haven't heard anything about being able to buy a movie on UMD, but I've scrunched full length movies, ripped from DVD, in the 300-500mb range. If you want to put in the effort of resampling all of your movies, just so you can watch them on the PSP, I'm sure you'll be able to.
What would be nicer is if someone could figure out if its possible to tweak mini DVDs to work in Sony's UMD standard.

they will have umd movies.
it's a mini usb port.
psp will likely raise the prices of the duo until more can be produced.
it's official, the Sony PSP will cost less than $200 in the U.S.
( posted by Hubert ) - January 09, 2005
The news is coming right now from CES: The Sony PSP will cost less than $200 when it launches in the U.S. (probably in March). This has been confirmed by Sony Executive Howard Stringer.
Sony's Portable Playstation will go against rival Nintendo DS in an epic battle -the first of this scope- for the mobile gaming market. For years, Nintendo has dominated unchallenged, but I think that their reign is about to end.
With superior technology at a similar price range, my opinion is that the PSP will suppress any Nintendo resistance. Beyond gaming, Sony will also try to position the PSP as an entertainment device, for movies viewing and music playing, hoping to challenge Apple's iPod itself.

Sony To Bring TV Broadcasts to the PSP
Sony has announced that it will be bringing its 'place-shifting' technology, which allows TV broadcasts to be viewed on laptops, via broadband, to the PSP.
The TV signal is received at a base station in the normal way, either via terrestrial signal, cable or satellite, and then sent to the PSP over the net.
Sony will initially trial this system in North America, although probably not on the PSP at first.
In other PSP news, following yesterday's news that Amazon.co.uk was taking pre-orders for the PSP at £179.99, it has now been revealed that the portable device will go on sale in the USA for under $200, putting it well within sight of the Nintendo DS.

If this thing is selling for $200 (I'm assuming just the system, and NO game), its going to break records for how fast it sells out.
Lets see... wait in line for a PSP
or Star Wars... I hope PSP takes pre-order, cause I don't own a tent. LOL.

nintendo ds has sold 500,000 pcs. the psp sold out its 200,000 on the 1st day. i wonder if sony can make enough.
yes preordering is a good idea. you can play it on the star wars line.
hmmm so its probably 199. Just because the PSP has more kick doesnt mean it will win. This reminds me of the Game Boy Vs. Game Gear debate of yester year. More so when you said something about TV broadcast (the hard to find TV Tuner for th GG). The market has changed and the old school video gamers have grown up able to afford a PSP. Nintendo has a funk with 3rd party and has a kiddie image problem.
Then-
Nintendo-kiddish, Sega- Sonic kool
Now-
Nintendo kiddish, Sony- kool, Microsoft-Halo
Hmmmmm?!?!?!

I don't completely agree. Nintendo made a killing with its SP, and when they came out with the retro version, I knew people in their 30s scouring the stores to buy one. Nintendo still has some nostalgia in it, and people buy into that. Especially if the gameplay is better than what they remember.
I think Sony will shoot themselves in the foot by requiring a specific format for their discs... what I mean is, if they had went with mini-DVD instead of UMD, they will initially get a better following. As long as the PSP remains problem-free within the first 6 months of its release, it will do fine.
I remember the whole handheld console war. I had an Atari Lynx because I absolutely despised the block-graphics on the GameBoy and all of the Sega Game Gear games pretty much sucked. I always thought the Turbo-Graphix 16's handheld, that played the same games as the console would be the winner, but TG had a problem cornering the market with decent games.

DS has also been out longer, but Nintendo has always known that flooding the market is better than selling short. How many months was the XBOX sold out? I think I read somewhere that the PSP will initially have 500,000 units to sell once its released in the states. I could be wrong, but it'd be interesting to see what would happen if they did.
At any point, I think the PSP will do well. It won't be the end-all to the GameBoy and it won't do a very good job of killing the iPod media player, but it will definitely corner the media player market, costing half as much as most already on the market.

the ds launched only 2 weeks earlier in japan. no nintendo will not disappear. microsoft shouldve bought them instead of releasing the xbox.

I think Msoft will be fine. As long as they allow the XBOX 2 to play the XBOX 1 games.
now remember the DS is NOT a game boy. Strange how they didnt name it a Game Boy whatever. The next game boy is on the drawing boards and Nintendo claims the DS will not replace the Game Boy. I think they have to say that. I'm just saying just because something is more powerful doesnt mean it will win. N64 vs. PSX, GG vs. GB. I laughed at problem free. Sony does have an issue with quality on their Playstations. The original PSX had over heating issues, and a recall on the power cable. PS2 has the read disc error etc. Wonder how long a sony portable will last?
wouldnt it be funny if the little Game Boy Advance/SP beat the DS and the PSP? LOL

I could totallly see the SP beating out the DS and the PSP, but thats because its affordable gaming, and alot of people made the switch to the nicer gameboy graphics, and backlit LCD.
I think DS is another marketing gimmik to get Nintendo back in the spotlight. The cube was such a disaster that they prolly feel a little hurt. They can only hold on to their nostalgia image for a few more years, then people will be wanting more.
I relate the DS to the old GameBoy Virtual Boy. That thing was such a POS.
