With this new merger, what is it going to do to the title sponser of Nascar? Netel will no longer be one company. Will it be the Nascar Sprint Nextel Cup?

There is a story on yahoo about it. They state that at least in 2005 it will remain just the nextel cup.

not sure how everyone liked the playoff series style this year. maybe it'll change to sprint and go back to just championship points for overall victor.

France said he did not know about the merger untell the day it was announced. But it will stay nextel cup for the 10 years of the naming rights. So don't expect to see sprint/nextel cup racing. I think you may see added some sprint logos and maby a voting thing like cingular now has. With Robby Gordon leaving the drivers seat I am not sure what cingular will have for a driver and If I remember one of the reasons hes leaving now is because of sponser issues (but I am not sure what those are). French gave an interview on the merger at http://www.nascar.com/2004/news/headlines/cup/12/15/france_nextel/index.html.
As far as the points system if it had not changed then 48 Johnson would have got the cup, (wether thats good or bad is up to you). It did make for a interesting 10 and races and it did bring the field closer together. how ever nascar has had alot of good seasons with close endings in the past.
I think next season will be interesting watching the car owners and drivers seeing what Hendrick Motorsports will do with there Chevy moters to beat DEI, and what Roush will do with the 6 Martian and the 16 Biffel. As Martian will retire and a champion ship would be a good way to go, and Biffel and his team are strong. The Roush/Yates package has deffently made a spot in nascar for it's self. DEI is going to be interesting with Slugger going to 8 Jr and Eury gotin to the 15 waltrup, 15 has to be in the top 10 next season or look for a new ride in 06, but I think DEI will push the 15 more and maby send some $$ that way. Petty will be like they have been, most of there race winnings is going towards the camp right now but that will change when the camp is self suffecent.
The ones to watch will be the 12 of Newman and the 2 of Wallace. Penske Racing is uot to make Dodge a big name is Nascar. You might see them team with other dodge owners like Chip Ganassi Racing or Evernham Motorsports. somthing that direction.
Well its long and windy and finly I am done

Question: Will sprint phones be able to get the stuff nextel has for cup fans. Like the phone shells, and that incar listen to the driver/tyeam thing. That would be cool. And will the track pass be better.

Am I on the money or what, this is the boy this year, watch Biffle is the champ in 05. Roush/Yates Ford is going 3 times

Unsung Biffle may be man to beat in NASCAR
By Mike Harris, The Associated Press

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) -- People tend to overlook Greg Biffle.

At 35, he certainly isn't one of NASCAR's so-called Young Guns, nor is he a big talker who elicits much attention. But Biffle definitely has credentials.
p m
A newspaper recently did an anonymous survey of 15 Nextel Cup drivers, asking their opinion on the best in the series. Biffle was on a very short list led by four-time champion Jeff Gordon.

Biffle is the only driver to have won championships in both the Busch and Craftsman Truck series. Now, he's giving every indication of being a serious contender for another title in his third full season on NASCAR's top circuit.

"Biffle is no surprise to anybody in the NASCAR garage," said teammate and series champion Kurt Busch. "Everybody knows what a good driver he is and how tough he and that No. 16 team can be if they put it all together."

Although his first two years in the Cup series produced finishes of 20th and 17th in the standings, the driver from Vancouver, Wash., has four victories. But two of those wins have come in his last three races -- the season-finale last year at Homestead-Miami Speedway and last Sunday at California Speedway.

The win here was particularly impressive, with Biffle twice coming from far back in the field and leading the last 23 laps.

It was apparently no surprise to Biffle, who predicted he would win the race after testing at the track in January.

"After that test, I had a pretty strong feeling that we would win out here if something crazy didn't happen," he explained.

But that doesn't mean it was easy. He muscled his ill-handling Ford to the end, beating hard-charging Jimmie Johnson by six car-lengths.

"This was the toughest of my life to earn," Biffle said. "We overcame more in that race than I ever have in a race car. The car was so loose at times I could hardly keep it going in the right direction, and I didn't know why."

Now, thanks to that masterful driving job -- and despite a 25th-place finish in the season-opening Daytona 500 -- Biffle is fifth in the standings, trailing leader Busch by just 67 points.

Biffle gave car owner Jack Roush his first NASCAR title when he won the truck championship in 2000, and added the Busch championship two years later. Now, Biffle would like nothing better than to present his boss a third straight Cup title.

Matt Kenseth gave Roush his first in 2003.

"I've learned a lot about myself and the way you have to race to win in Nextel Cup," said Biffle, who has been in some trouble on the track by being overly aggressive. "I really think we've got everything we need to be contenders.

"I think Jack gives us everything we need. Now we just have to put it together and make it happen."

It wouldn't surprise crew chief Doug Richert if Biffle becomes the first driver to win titles in all three of NASCAR's top touring circuits.

"I really feel this team is ready," Richert said. "The team has matured, and we've figured out what we need to give Greg for him to win."

Richert knows a bit about calling the shots for championship teams. He was the crew chief in 1980, when the late Dale Earnhardt won the first of his record-tying seven titles.

Roush, who also fields Cup cars for Busch, Kenseth, longtime star Mark Martin and promising newcomer Carl Edwards, has stood behind Biffle even when the driver made disparaging remarks about the team last year.

"There has never been any doubt about his talent," said Roush, who signed Biffle sight unseen after a recommendation from former NASCAR champion Benny Parsons. "He has the ability to do just about anything he wants in this sport, and I expect him to do it for our team."

But, after just two of 36 races, Biffle doesn't want anybody to get too excited.

He shrugged when asked if his victory here is a sign of things to come.

"I don't know," Biffle said. "I'll let everyone else figure that one out."

what really stinks is the fact that wether or not the merger takes place, i can't get a face plate for my phone. newman rocks, but i can't see sprint or nextel making a plate for (gasp!!! alltel) if i can find a nice decal, i can put it on my spare face plate. if anyone knows of one existing please post.

Why not? They usually have just his face and the #12 on it, plus Alltel isnt the "major" sponsor on his car for a few races, right? Get the pic from a Alltel "minor" sponsor race maybe?

I heard they're going to rename the series for what it actually is now with the new points system... The Nextel-Welfare Cup! Give points to drivers who don't earn them...

No one likes change, except those who benefit from it. Same could be said about the "top 35" getting a automatic spot in the race no matter how they qualify. This is a merger forum though and not a nascar one. I doubt nextel coming on board had alot to do with changing the points system or the "provisionals" so enjoy the race on sunday ! :D
