Go to eBay and search "sprint 6601" and you will see 3 auctions with the same description--AudioVox PPC-6601 Phone SmartPhone SPRINT w/ EXTRAS!!
This appears to be one of those scams where the scammer "takes over" innocent and honest ebay user IDs. This person is "selling" tons of phones right now. He insists on being paid via Western Union. These bastards piss me off...
I emailed this person, and check out this response:
[I]Dear Customer,
I am a serious seller ...........please check my feedback.
Ok send me 370$ for my phone.
First you must know that for the payment i accept Western Union money order and i will
ship you the package via UPS Air Express in 2 Days.
please go to www.westernunion.com insert you address at FIND A LOCAL AGENT and you will see that they are a lot of western union agentcy near you.
Here's what you have to do.You must go to an Western Union office and make the payment on my name and address, after you made the payment people from Western Union will give you a MTCN# (Money Transfer Control Number),
you must mail me this number and i will check with this number at Western Union web page and if everything it's fine and you are a serious buyer i will go right away at UPS and send you the package and the tracking number from UPS in your e-mail to be able to check that the package is in your way. After you will receive the package you must mail me to pick up the money.
My payment info is:
FULL NAME: PREDA IONEL

Thanks and i will wait your full name and address because i need to know where i must shipp the package!
Have a nice day

What a ripoff!!!
There is a thread going on at treocentral.com about the same thing with a GSM Treo 650. (They are not available yet. Just preorder) The wording is pretty much the same, but the scammer is in Romania. The words "Western Union Money Transfer" says it all.

I know its far fetched, but has anyone notified Ebay, or MSNBC? Get a news agency involved, they would love to chase 'scammers' for an article or two

I emailed eBay. This is definitely something a local news crew would eat up...

I had the same thing happen last year involving an i500. Scammers are everywhere. What probably happened is that the person whose account was hijacked possibly answered one of those phony ebay.com emails and gave the hijacker all their info.

Phishing is the most likely cause.

I like the way you think.
I just emailed the only bidder on one of the listings and told them to be careful and to come to this forum. Hopefully it helped. Did you guys notice that they're all 1 day listings out of Germany!

there were two completely different ebay users using the exact same wording in their selling. and both have their mailboxes full? last I knew when I have sold stuff on ebay if you click on email the seller it forwards it to your registered mail address.
BS flag thrown in my mind.

That and all the real bidderrs auctions have been in German...and not the same type of merchandise.

EBay should establish a protocol to thwart this nonesense...reminds me of the days the truckers (no offense intended...they had a point of view), tired of interference from non-trucker traffic on the highways made the airwaves a jungle of profanity to minimize CB band traffic...it stopped the family CB craze dead in its tracks...if Ebay does not take some measures to pritect buyers (and its good name) they too could go the way the wild goose goes...

If you do get scammed and the person lives in another state, it is almost impossible to get your money back. If the person lives in another country well forget about it. There is so much red tape to go through if you get scammed most people give up, and correct if EBAY doesnt implement some real buyer protection they will shut down real soon. They need to get proof of peoples SS# before you can sell.

Oh wow, I didn't check dates and I thought that this scam was making a new round. It actually happened to me when I was a noob. Lost $1000 on a phantom computer. :(

I didn't even see the dates, lol. I was wondering the same things you guys did. The 6601 sucks, I wouldn't even pay $100 for one in 2004.

This is why I always use paypal, and I used a credit card from my credit union that has 100% fraud protection and will return my money if I am scammed.......
Western Union is a mistake!!!!!

My friend fell for this before christmas, except they were selling an Xbox 360, i think it was from Romania as well, and they only too Western Union. She came to me after she bid and paid to ask if I thought it was ok.... I was like why didn't you come before, it is obviously a scam.
