I just wanted to know what technology is after EVDO, I did a search and came up with something called WCDMA and UMTS I dont know which one is next or which one is better. I was also reading that Cingular is going to be deploying UMTS early next year and have it at every major city by the end of the year.
Is sprint planning on deploying anything to compete with this?

EV-DO competes with UMTS, delivering essentially the same throughput in 1/4 the spectrum.
As another posted, the next step after EV-DO is EV-DV.

Sprint hinted that it will deploy EV-DO Release 0, then possibly upgrade to Release A. Then EV-DV should begin deployment.
EV-DO Release A should usher in a full 3G era with realtime video phones.
It's anyone's guess, but I think we'll see EV-DO Release 0 finished deployment by the end of 2005 to early 2006. Sprint said it would be quick and easy to upgrade to Release A, so that may be in by the end of 2006 early 2007. Finally, I think we'll see EV-DV soon after that. I think by 2008, realtime video phones will start seeing mass production. That's still 3-4 years away :( , but I guess we'll have to hold tight until then.
