Apparently Verizon will only be charging $15 for u/l usage of their new EVDO technology, to be unveiled in January.

This would make it very tempting for me, a data-mongrul, to finally give VZW a try....

Meh, big deal. sure it makes verizon look better, but at the end of the day it'll still be verizon. sprint will still be $15 so why change?

Why change? For the serious increase in speed. At least thats what Verizon says. I bet it would not run as fast as they claim but for marketing purposes it would destroy sprint especially for the xmas season.

exactly, for the christmas season. sprint will be rolling out EVDO in 2005 so why even bother switching just for a couple extra months of higher speed?

I checked out Verizon before joining Sprint. They don't have unlimited picture sending or receiving. They don't have mobitv or streaming videos. I would hold off until next year. Sprint is going to have all kinds of new gadgets when their ev-do is launched. I've seen the video call phone and it's going to blow everything away.

You can just get the $10 Vision option, which I have, that the only difference from the $15 Vision plan is the amount of download credits you get each month. $5 as opposed to $10.

what does that have to do with EVDO?

If you're using a PDA, Sprint is $30, but Verizon is $45 with a 100MB cap on their "unlimited service". Sprint gives you 100 SMS messaging for free, VZW charges $2.99 for 100 messages. Sprint gives you unlimited picture messaging, at VZW you have to pay. Sprint gives you $10 credit toward downloadable ringers, games, etc.

Key word here is that they are TESTING it for $15. We all know they will charge more when it's available for consumers.

Well $15 yo to $24 dollars seem to be the way the market is going. However, if we use Sprint as a model. The vision service was the cheapest byt once people bought all the extra stuff on Sprint site then the bill still hit the roof.
Well its stupid for Verizon not to have some unlimited data plan. So Verizon finally would allow there non-techo customers to get on the internet.

Do we know for certain that Sprint's EV-DO will not cost any more than its current 1XRTT?

To be determined. No pricing has been discussed anywhere that I am aware of.

The price will go up. Don't kid yourself. It's one of those certanties in life that no one likes to admit.

Higher speeds, higher prices... A new phone getting delayed... Something awsome only comming out in Asia... A newbie's first post asking for something that's been posted 30 times...

How about this, we all expect it to be ~$25 for basic unlimited data usage. Then, if it's less expensive, we'll all be happy! How about it?

Verizon is testing it at that price, but it's not final. I'm waiting to see what they market it to the public for.

That's an excellent question and one for which I would luv an answer. As we moved from Wireless Web to Vision I wonder if it will still be called Vision or perhaps "Enhanced Vision" or "Vision 2.0"...who knows?

I just don't see the average consumer spending more than $10-15 for cellphone Internet no matter how fast it is. And your current average cellphone can't even make decent use of Vision, as its CPU, memory and screen are just too limiting. Only PDA/smartphones and modem/tethered usage currently is a reasonable match to Vision's speeds and potential, and tethered usage is officially banned. So I think more than $15 for Vision or EVDO is more than the market will bear for the average consumer. If they want EVDO to cater to the business user or geek, that's fine, but a much more limited market.

On the other hand, maybe what they should do is re-price Vision to be $5/month or $5/month plus minutes (like WW was). Then I think the numbers of customers signing up for Vision would skyrocket (even my wife would probably use it at those prices), and Vision revenue overall would jump. Price EVDO at $15 if you want average consumers to consider it, or at $25-30 if you only want it to address a niche market.

Anyone know from the inside if Sprint is "happy" with the current adoption rate and usage (and revenue) of Vision ? Vision at $15 is just too much for the average person -- it would be too much for me also. I have it for $10 which is just at the edge of what its worth to me, and I'm a business/geek user :-)
