USing Sprint to dial ISP, any extra chrages?

Will there be any extra charges if I use my phone as a modem to dial my dialup ISP or will sprint simply treat it as a standard phone call?

I am about to leave on vacation and would really like to be able to use my Nokia 6225 for internet access on nights and weekends but don't want to be charged any extra money.

I think most phones can only make data calls to #777, but if it will dial for you, it should be a normal charge. FYI, if you have a vision plan, you should be fine using vision unless you're going to be doing much more then checking email/Instant messaging. (also, if you're staying in a hotel you should check if they have free wifi).

Thanks for the reply. I am under the impression that it will act as a modem and allow you to dial any number. Last I heard #777 doesn't work on the Nokia 6225(which I have) and I don't have vision (probably would if it did work).

So is there anyone out there who has used sprint with a regular dialup acount that can verify that it does not cost any extra?

If you use your phone to dial your isp you will be charged for all data usage during the call. Sprint can tell the difference between a phone call and a data call. Vision will not cover the charges for an isp call, so you can expect to pay for all data charges.

i agree with chrisw. i think the issue is people using #777 to download music, movies, etc. in additioon to the legal issues, it hogs bandwidth. normal usage seems to work. trust me, i know...

If you can dial your ISP (doubtful) it will cost you 39 (37?) cents a minute and use your minutes. And your maximum speed will be 14.4. Just use Vision (dialing #777). If you're just using it casually while traveling there shouldn't be any problem. - sheureka

I was only charged once. I was online for 25 minutes and had been previously told that I would only be "charged" airtime. I was charged at $.39 a min.

Since then, I've used it several times, but not too frequently. I have yet to be charged for those uses. I think the maximum amount of time I spent online was 20 min...but that was because it was so dang slow to get my email in, check status on various websites, etc.

So, you can try and see what happens. Now that I upgraded to the 7400, I'm not sure if anything will change. I don't plan on doing it regularly because, as someone mentioned, they want to prevent people from using it as an ISP.

By the way, I've never dialed #777. What is that, anyway? I have free use of my university's ISP (I work at the UW-Madison) and used that. OSX already has a driver that recognizes the phone as a modem. It's called "Sprint PCS vision".

go to radio shack, buy the snapdialer software. it uses the #777 option. (get a new cable for the sanyo, while you're there.)

my only question would be, is it compatible with the ibook . . .

I don't even need the snapdialer software. All I need is the datacable and I'm ready to go.

I've used it on my iBook with no problem. Like I said, OSX already has the driver for it. When you select the modem, you select "Sprint PCS vision".

As for the #777 thing, THAT is the question of compatibility. Will THAT work with the iBook and the pre-installed driver? I have yet to try it.

Does anyone have any issues using the MM7400 as a modem to dial #777? I use my 8100 frequently and it connects at an indicated 115kb - it feels slow but I don't use dial-up any more so it is hard to tell if it is slower than it should be.

Will I need a new cable or would the 8100 cable work?

You may need a new cable. The data/charging ports are the same, as the phone will charge with the same charger but Im not sure if the old cable will work for data. I would try the old cable and if that does not work get a new cable. I have seen issues when trying to get data from the newer sanyo's with the older cables.

And no, it's not vision, it's an entirely different contract addition. Also, if they catch you using it without that option, they can cancel your contract and charge you the full usage amount and the cancellation fee.

At one time I had sprint software where it would allow me to connect usuing vision.

no... EVDO, in the current rev, will not/does not allow simultaneous data and voice.

Using your Vision phone as a modem for 2G CDMA data (3rd party ISP, faxing or QNC #2932) is not a violation of the TOS. You will be charged $0.39/min and it will *not* consume voice plan minutes.

Using your Vision phone as a modem for Vision (#777) 1xrtt data *is* a violation of the TOS. However there are no known cases of anyone being "caught" or charged for LIGHT, occasional usage.

Using an old 2G (non-Vision) phone as a modem (3rd party ISP, faxing or QNC #2932) can be covered under the $5/mo WirelessWeb option. This usage *does* consume voice plan minutes, but there are no other charges.

unless its changed in the past 2 years, when i dialed-up to a dial ISP, it used my normal minutes but charged me the $0.02 per kb usage charge. there wasn't a 0.39 charge per minute.
