View Full Version : Is the 650 Mem allocation a problem for you?

I have read on Treocentral people talking about the memory allocation size (similar to cluster size of 512KB) causing some databases (like contacts/appointments) to use large amounts of memory. Much more in some cases than the treo 600 requires for the same data.
Has anyone with a 650 had a big issue with this?
Also some issues with third party apps that use the palm databases.
I plan to run datebook 5 and quickoffice on mine and wonder if these are going to be a problem.

I read that also,
this is the only thing causing me to hesitate on snapping up a treo 650 today.
that and they're not in the stores yet.

I'll be returning mine because of the memory problem and no bluetooth dial up networking. If they each get fixed in the future, then maybe I'll buy one again.

No, not really. True its unfortunate that this is an issue, yet the 650 has way too many other cool features to complain over this one lag. Besides, there are too many apps out that can remedy this issue, such as powerrun, zlauncher, launcher x. Apps that allow you to run apps directly from the expansion card. People just like to complain. There is no perfect device, but these people like to pretend that if they continue to ridicule the ones that come insanely close, one day one will be created.

It would be nice to see the memory situation resolved on the 650.
Looking at my Garmin 3600 (my palm OS PIM) I see that I have 204 Address records using 25K of memory, I have quickoffice, and datebook5. Looks like I have used 6MB of the 22.8 available user memory. So I assume that even if I double the number of contacts and the device is 4 times less effecient with contacts (apps should be about the same) than I will still have some memory left. I hope to get a BT GPS and some map software as well so I can have similar functionality to my garmin on the 650.
I don't know what impact haveing email accounts and web browsing will have on memory as I don't do that on the garmin.

I gotta say, stuff like this makes me chuckle. We all knew that DUN was not going to be included in the launch of the 650...
Anyway, the memory problem has not shown to be a problem for me at this point. I have all of my contacts (about 500) over on the device. I haven't really started using it for email yet (that will be today's test).

Thank You. I haven't had any problems either.

A guy on treocentral wrote a post about zlauncher being a very workable fix for the memory issue. Of course in addition to dealing with moving apps and databases to SD due to the memory chunk size issue, a program like this would have enhanced the device due to inherent limitations for a 23mb user memory area.
Too bad that P1 didn't license it from the beginning - or develop a similar app to include in the 650. There presentation at the Roadshow that I attended focused on the fact that they did not expand the internal memory of the 650 due the the cost effectiveness of "simply" adding sd cards.
In my case I purchased a 1 GB for 50 bucks (after rebate), which I should never outgrow, but the device really needs to handle onboard memory and SD memory transparently to the user in order to support the position of small internal memory capacity.
It seems that Palm OS is in a position similar to where we were in the DOS days. When you could have a lot of memory on a PC but utilizing anything beyond 640K was tricky.

I don't think the memory thing will be a huge issue for me if i ever get it. Half of the stuff that was on my T600 (and my current Tungsten E) I didn't even use.

Yea, it definitely not an issue for me! I do have Zlauncher and a sd card as well though, but I think only the "power" users will be greatly affected.
BTW you can dial using Bluetooth :) Pdanet allows it. REad over on Treocentral, but it does work

Yeah, this is a non-issue for me, too. I'm upgrading from a Handspring Prism with 8MB of RAM, so 23 is tons!!! Now, I have a memplug for the Prism, and it allows me to run programs off the SM card, so really I have 136MB. I have only found one program that won't run from the memplug, so I hope my experiences with the Treo will be similar.
I will have to abandon Silver Screen though. Zlauncher wasn't even available when I bought Silver Screen, and I just love the SS ticker with appointments and to-do items. But SS has crappy SD card management, and that seems to be manditory in my next launcher.....
I just wish my Treo would get here......:(

The memory problem doesnt affect me at all. I have all the same apps I did on my 600, all my contacts and pictures, and I still have 20mb of memory.
Also, there is a hack for the BT DUN profile...already. Problem solved.
The device is wonderful...IMO

P1 just announced that they will give 128mb cards to 650 owners who request one the first part of Dec. They have also stated they are working on the memory problem.
To many this is a real problem and I'm glad to see P1 do something about it because the Treo ROCKS!! I handled one at the DC roadshow and await my unit. :D

Yes it is a problem, I ran out of memory on the T600, pushing apps to the SD card makes everyting slow down. The Idea of an SD card is to be able to remove it for more storage. This can not happen if you have several apps linked to the SD card.
However my wife could care less. She doesn't even use the features she has aon the phone. So it depends on what type of person is using the phone.
To me we should be able to fully use all the features of a "Smart Phone" that means being able to load a buch of programs and games.
