Due to new copy right laws D-D-N.com has to close the public archives until we receive further notice from musicians and music publishers. We do apologize for the inconvenience. You still can use your personal space to add your own ringtones and screensaver. Again we do apologize we should be up and running again within a few days.

Anybody know what this is all about?

I did some research and it appears since d-d-n posted the above message that they admitted to willfull copyright infringement, which means they can be imprisoned (i think its like 5 years) and sued for up to $150,000 per instance (file). Can't believe they would now put all their files back up after coming out with a message like that. They must not have a very good attorney.

Found a lawsuit where EMI music publishing sued a ringtone site called yourmobile.com. Its funny because some of the songs mentioned in the article are actually listed on DDN. Good luck d-d-n.

I guess it depends on whether or not the individual ringtone site pays royalties to artists. I found a link on 3GUPLOAD.COM's FAQ:

hmmm....makes me wonder if i should worry and shut my site down. mine is free, i don't charge anything, does that matter? i guess as long as my site doesn't get as big and well known i can duck under the radar, but its kinda scary. its bad that you have to worry about being sued no matter what you do.....

MyPhoneFiles.com has just gone to a "must pay for" service. Last Wednesday it was free, this past Sunday I went there and found that it is o longer free. Bummer.

I the record companies get REALLY pissed when others are making money off their music. I wouldnt think a small free ringer site would bother them much. I dont think I would subscribe to a ringer sight unless they were like 3gupload, and do pay for the rights to the songs. Otherwise, you may see your money go down the drain when the site is shut down.

Of course the best way would be for everyone to create their own ringers and take out the middle mans....

D-D-N pays the music companies. Or at least they make a legal effort to.

I dont want to get into a pissing contest, but I know that is not true. And lying about it only brings the entire industry down, so please lets just leave it at that.
