Ok, so I got the POP feature now and I have been trying ALL DAY to get GMail to work with Outlook. I can receive mail fine, but sending is not happening. I have tried all the things GMail lists in theor help section to no avail. Any Outlook guru's out there that can shed some light on this?

I use GMail for work and being able to yse Outlook is a definite benefit. Thanks in advance.

BTW - after I set all the settings and attempt to do a test , I get an error message telling me the email address is entered incorrect or something, but it isn't.

So I know that it isn't a server side problem. Now this is going to sound retarded....but please recheck your settings. It almost sounds like the step that maybe missing is "'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication"

Could you please post the error that you get, when you try to send emails?

Task 'GMail - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

*Now Outlooks works fine with hotmail here, and it works fine with my SBC email at home, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong here.

*I also have checked the 'my server requires authentication' box.

are you using gmails smtp server? Its possible that your isp does not alow you to use another smtp server to cut down on spam being sent. Try your isp's smtp server and that may work.

that sounds like a plausible explaination -- our cable provider does not allow you to send outgoing mail through any other server but theirs when you are on their network. so for alternate email accounts i use the email's incoming and the isp's outgoing mail servers

Hmmm, I will check again when I go back to work, but how would I find out my ISP's smtp server info? We work off of a shared T1 line for internet......and if this is the case, why does hotmail work and not this.....

Okey hopefully this can sum up everything I guess and also help other with questions and on how to set up outlook to work with GMail.

What settings are needed to setup gmail in google?

What are the SMTP,IMAP,POP,etc settings and addresses that are needed for the Send and Receive Fields.

If someone would please post all settings needed on here. Thanx!

smtp.gmail.com

Prob the thing to do would be to call your isp and ask them if they alow the use of another smtp server or not. If not they will tell you what their smtp server is so that you can use that. If that does not seem to work you may want to try deleting the gmail account from Outlook and rebuild it again. I have seen it many times where an account will not work with the correct info entered in Outlook, then after deleting and rebuilding it everything works fine.

if you are on a residental isp, its probably blocked. But you mentioned a t1, which is usually only affordable to business users, so I doubt its blocked if you're on a t1.

Have you tried the auto config tool?

hotmail uses http instead of smtp, it's a different protocol.

for your isp's smtp server use the same one you use with the email account your isp provided you.

i would call your isp and find out if the outgoing mail is restricted to their smtp server and what the name of said server is and try that.

its a commercial isp, so I doubt they block ports.

well, i deleted and set up again with my outlook here at work to no avail. it works fine with my outlook at home. i can receive mail here just fine, but i cannot send. i guess i will call the fone coompany today and see if they can tell me something about the t1 that may be preventing me from setting it up properly.

Who's your provider? Cox Communications began blocking port 25 on Friday in my location; you may be forced to switch SMTP servers as well.

Yummi

well, gmail said not to use port 25, but they did say try 465 or 867, neither of which worked for me. I have decided to give up for now, and just check it on the web for now.

Who is your ISP? If they are blocking, you should still be able to set up your SMTP with one of their mailservers, even if you don't have an e-mail address through them.

EDIT: sorry, think I'm retreading previously covered ground

um, english please? i sent an email to our telecom provider, so i am hoping to get some insight and finally fix the problem.

All of the incoming information (POP) is set exactly the way Gmail has prescribed. However, my ISP (Cox Communications) is blocking the normal outgoing (SMTP) email port to cut down on spammers. This means I can ONLY send email through their SMTP mail server. So my POP3 server is pop.gmail.com, but my SMTP server is smtp.central.cox.net. If your ISP is blocking outgoing email ports, they will provide you with an SMTP server (one of their own) to route all of your outgoing mail. If this is the case, your Telecom should provide you with the necessary information to fix your problem.

Hope that helps! A lot of people in my area are experiencing the same problems you are this week (myself included). :)

Anyone know of a POP3/SMTP app for Sprint phones. That would be a cool idea :)

*UPDATE*

well, after alot of back and forth between me, gmail, and XO Communictions, the problem has an asnwer, but no solution.

due to the fact that gmail is not a widespread web-based email, XO will not open any smtp ports to send mail. Hotmail and Yahoo are fine as they have been around for awhile, but GMail is a bit too new for them. So, I sent that info to GMail and hope that when its officially released, they can talk to XO and work something out. Until them, I can read thru Outlook, but have to log onto the web to reply.

Well, it's rather unfortunate that XO can't provide you with an SMTP server of their own (perhaps they don't offer POP3/SMTP at all?), but hopefully things will clear up after a while. I always thought it was odd Gmail would offer POP3 access in the first place; kind of bypasses their 1GB of storage and unique filing system, making them just another fish in the pond.

I think he may have meant Thunderbird, an alternate email manager; Firefox is a web browser.

I wouldn't mind doing that, but ever since I got my new phone, I can't access my PCSmail through the Manage website. When I log into the SprintPCS website, and click on PCSmail, I get a screen asking me to sign up, then when I click on Sign Up, I get a blank page with the SprintPCS logo and tabs at the top, but nowhere for me to enter any information :(

If I call Tier 1, can they fix this?

the reqwireless email client works great, you have to input all of the settings found on the gmail help page for pop access. and for the your personal settings enable pop and choose "keep gmail's copy". if you select the "trash gmail's copy" gmail will delete any message you read on your phone. so you'll have to dig them from the trash folder.

the settings for the java client:
for the protocol choose "secure pop3"
under advanced set the pop port to "995"
under smtp set choose "secure smtp" and port "465"
