A user stated that he or she was able to use BitPim. If it doesn't have the 5300 in the list of supported models, just try other random models. Sometimes you can trick it into working with your phone just by selecting a different model than the one you actually have.
The problem you will run into there is whether or not your phone has write support. Many are read-only, I believe.
The other problem could also be your data cable. Some cables are just junk. I have one of those. 3gcables.com is a good place to get them, I've heard.
