Hi,
I'm currently away in Key West on Vacation and I'm having a problem connecting an A620 to a laptop. I have 2 identical A620's my wifes', which is the primary phone on the account and my "add a phone" A620. My phone connects with no problem #777 blank username and password, but hers keeps failing saying Error 692 there was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device). I've looked through the settings on both phones and they all look the same, I've updated the vision profile on her phone which didn't help and I've made sure that the phone doesn't need to prompt you for pressing enter before allowing to use the browser in the NETGUARD menu. You can use vision through the phone as well, I'm drawing a blank on what setting is left.
The only reason I care is because I wanted to distribute the usage between 2 phones instead of all data hitting one phone, my wife hardly never uses vision anyway and my phone has had about 50 megs over the last year, her still shows in K...
Any other sugguesting would be GREATLY appreciated!

I have heard this problem before. It is usually a phone issue (obviously). So there may be a problem with the port on the phone or a problem with the modem hardware internally. It won’t help you now, but I would suggest getting a new phone if it is important to you. Just tell Sprint that you cannot transfer over your phone book with that phone but can with the other one. Not a good idea to tell them you are trying to connect to #777. I have two phones also and use one strictly as a modem when I travel. It is awesome because you can still make phone calls while browsing the web; very cool.

I have a similar problem...my A620 used to work like a charm with #777 blank username & pwd on my laptop, but yesterday I could not access the web with the phone browser and got a bunch of error messages. I took the phone to the Spint store and they upgraded Vision; the phone browser now works fine. However, when I got home I plugged the phone in the PC and.... nothing but the 692 error! I tried to re-install the drivers and the entire phone but no luck.... I am really upset because of course the store denies any responsibility and simply states "you should not be using your phone as a modem anyway, get a connection card"..... what an excuse! I used the 620 as a modem about once a week to access the web for a total of maybe 5 minutes and generate a printout when I am in transit and I can't see justifying the cost of the card + service.
One possibility would be that the phone firmware was updated and that I need a new up-to-date driver.... I hope that it is this simple and that I can locate what I need!

It is likely not a driver issue. Actually, I know it is not a driver issue. Ports can go bad. Any static discharge inside your pocket can disable all or part of the port. That is why they come with the rubber grommet in it for protection. Yes, they could still do a firmware upgrade on your phone and not have the internet connection part of the port working. You could always “lose” the phone and have insurance get you a new one but that is dishonest =(

I have a similar situation to testacon's. I have 3 phones with dataports in the family (the other 2 are Sanyo 8200's) and I'm using the DataPilot software with its USB cable to connect my laptop to the internet. The only thing I use that for is to send email from work. The work LAN has outgoing POP mail blocked. (They did that to stop worms from flooding the system with emails from people's Outlook.)
At any rate the #777 thing all of a sudden has stopped working and I get a "no dial tone" message. I'm out of town now but when I get home I'll try to connect with the wife's phone. However ... DataPilot has no trouble transferring the phone book info to and from the phone. So in your experience are there different contacts on that data port that handle modem data and phone book data? Thanks for any help.

No, the I/O line in USB data cables is the same to connect to the and as transfer contacts. However, in the serial cables used at the tech labs they can access different ports such as to flash firmware.

I couldn't get my phone to connect after the first time and I went nuts trying to figure out why. I re-installed all the software/drivers and nothing. After two days of trying different things, I read the trick here somewhere of what worked for one guy. All I had to do was disconnect my phone, turn it off for 10-15 secs and turn it on and plug it back in. That's it! That simple. Hope this helps someone. :)

Many times we forget that is the first thing one should do when diagnosing a cell phone problem (or any computer or electronic problem for that matter). Sometimes it is ever better to remove the battery from the phone for a few seconds then put it back in.
Glad to see you got it working.
