Looks like the Sanyo 5600 may not be the only SprintPCS EV-DO for long.

you must be an insider if you can state that the 5600 will be an EV-DO phone that confidently... since you're probably not, it's worth saying that that is totally unconfirmed.

Sprint has had data cards for a long time now.

Sprint has had data cards for a long time now.

Not EV-DO cards which was what they were asking.

No, there are no EV-DO high speed data cards yet and no need for them IF Sprint will let us dial #777 for EV-DO that is the BIG question we will have to wait and see.

You are correct. I am not an insider and that statement was pure speculation. (Will ya give me hopeful wishing?)

Interesting claim on that link in Hofo... too bad a couple of the phones (if not all) are NOT EV-DO phones...

I know, that leads me to believe the 5600 almost certainly is not EV-DO.

My understand is that it is NOT on the EV-DO list, but as always, things are subject to change.

From what we have been told by Corp. the 5600 is an EV-DO phone. That is why its not releasing now, since Ev-Do is not up. Also, the EV-DO air cards should be available in a few markets soon (yeah for being in KC!) Also, Samsung and LG both have phones coming also for EV-DO.

I highly doubt any phone that comes out this year (physical year 2004), will be able to take advantage of EV-DO even if it is EV-DO compatible.

When EV-DO comes out they will have to do a big campaign if they want it to take off. If they do that, "For business" approach, it won't take off with the potential it could. Businesses will use it but for them to make money they gotta do more than that "get contracts with companies" approach, otherwise it'll end up like Ready Link. Ready Link is an in the mix, could be, coulda been; almost like Sprint doesn't know what they want to do with it.

If the PPC6601 and Treo650 aren't EV-DO compatible and capable, this really shows that Sprint doesn't konw what it wants to do with EV-DO. If they say they want to take the business approach then those 2 phones should have been EV-DO ready since they are PDA's (business oriented), unless of course the real launch of EV-DO (for Sprint) is further away than most of us think.

One thing is for sure, RL could be a lot further along if Sprint had have did it right. If they don't find out what they want to do with EV-DO before it comes out it'll end up like an in the mix, could be, coulda been thing too.

There are a lot more factors to having EV-DO compatibility in a phone than listed above. It all has to do with the ANTICIPATED release of EV-DO not the actual release. Manufactures design phones far in the future of the actual release of the phone. Even if there is substantiated rumor that EV-DO will be released in the next year, phone manufactures will jump right on it because they know that to be first out of the starting gate is key.

None of us will really know until the phones are released so lets just kick back and enjoy what we have for now =)

Are we talking calendar year (Dec. 31st) or fiscal year? ;)

You're right on the manufacturing side. But it is still up to Sprint to let the technology be used. Remember before Vision came out, there were many 3G compatible phone on the manufacturing side but of course Sprint was going to let them be 3G capable (as in, let my old Sanyo 5150 use Vision).

I am starting to think the 5600 will be EV-DO compatible and capable, since we know its not coming out in 2004 and more and more people are talking about it coming out later and later as this year ends. 1st some said Nov, then Dec, now some are saying Feb. But like said earlier, phones out this year probably won't be able to take advantage of EV-DO.

Phsyical as in real, as in actual, as in calendar. A fiscal year can end or begin on any day.

Is that a question or statement? PPC6601 is listed as EV-DO capable on
phonescoop and the pictures show it using MSM5500 chipset which Qualcomm
claims supports EV-DO. Now it still depends on Sprint network-side being
enabled for EV-DO and I suppose they could disable EV-DO in PPC6601 in
the firmware if for some reason they didn't want the feature available yet,
but that is different from something like LG PM-235 whose base chipset
MSM6050 doesn't support EV-DO, meaning the capability doesn't exist at all.
