View Full Version : PPC6601 First Impressions...

Just got the PPC6601 in my hot little hands, and can give some very preliminary first impressions.

First the unit is pretty large, but very comfortable to hold. I would put it at the size of a slightly thick Ipaq 2215. The unit is VERY light though, I am very impressed with its weight. Very comfortable to hold and the sliding keyboard is VERY smooth and sturdy. I am not a big keyboard guy, and think its a wasted space to include one, but it is very nice with nice tactile feel to it.

The reception so far seems great. My office typically gets crappy reception, ranging from 0 bars on my old i600 to 1-2 bars on my VM4050. I am looking at my PPC6601 charging right now and it has 3 bars of signal, which is fabulous in my office.

Screen is beautiful for QVGA. It seems like they have nice hardware as I have been used to the VGA screen on my Loox 720, but I dont feel like I am taking that large of a step down.

Overall it looks like a great unit, I am in that 2-4 hour programming period so dont want to use it yet and mess anything up. Will post further impressions as I go along.

I dont have my camera at work, I can take some pics tonight, but have nowhere to host them =(. Not sure if vision is always on, but I doubt it bc that would interfere with incoming calls. Havent played with it too much, work calls, LOL.

So what all did it come with? I'm debating between the 6601 and the Treo 650. I like the smaller size and longer battery life of the Treo, but also like some of the PPC options of the 6601. I tend to wear my phone for easy access, and based on all I've seen the 6601 is probably a little large for a belt clip.

Also, does the 6601 support swappable batteries like the new Treo will?

Thanks for the info!

Keep us updated as to how you like it and your overall impressions! What I'd really like to know is if our vision cost will double to $30 when activating this phone.

It came with very nice stereo headphones, cradle, a pretty decent sideways case with belt clip, and an extra stylus.

I was able to activate it on my primary line, and just as happened with my i600, no one even batted an eye that is was a PPC device, they just added it onto my current free unlmited vision $85/2000 plan without asking, adding any extra connection charges, or changing my plan. I think you will run into trouble if you are putting this on a new line.

I must say it is a real pleasure to talk on this phone/PPC. The earpiece is PHENOMENAL, it is very clear, very loud and it sticks out a lot, which is good because it is actually very hard to press your cheek to the screen and grease it up. Have not asked yet how outgoing voice quality is. Have fired up Vision on it and browsed some picture intensive sites, so far seems MUCH faster than my old PPC with a T608 as a bluetooth modem. Will check into it more tonight after the gym. I have also installed a couple of MP3 programs on it and plan to test them out at the gym tonight.

The only thing is due to its size it kind of feels like I am going to drop it, you must be super careful when pulling it out of your pocket unless you have huge hands.

Hi,

Thanks for giving us the goods on this device! Does it have the standard sprint barrel charging port on the bottom in addition to the normal charging/data port?

Also, have you tried tethering via bluetooth?

Thanks again. I am holding out for the PPC-6600 (if I can wait that long :))

aaahhhh the paper order - it's sitting in someone's desk drawer right now! Might as well buy yourself another phone and get double billed, at least that way you'll have a phone before the ppc6600 comes out in december because that's about when the paper order is going to go thru.

It has no receptacle for a barrel type charger unless you count on either the cradle, or it does come with an adapter that changes the sync port to a charger the same as most HP's come with.

When I called to check I just called telesales back and they gave me a tracking number.

The earpiece is almost too loud, LOL, wow it is nice. I have to put it at half volume. In case you guys did not know it has a HARDWARE volume button on the side which can control your phone volume and your PPC volume separately, mute, etc etc. Speakerphone is VERY good, and the mic is awesome from even a couple of feet away. One issue that has come up is if you have the PPC set to turn off after x minutes your call gets cut off, Im sure there is a fix for this just havent played around with it.

Another question for you (you didn't think you were going to get any work done today did you?): how are the other volumes and vibrate on the phone? That's one of my chief complaints about the Treo is that the ringer volume is too soft unless using the "Loud Phone" annoying ringer, and the vibrate is also under powered. Does the 6601 rate ok on those? Thanks!

I left Sprint a while ago for their lack of bluetooth. With this phone, is bluetooth crippled or can you use dailup networking to surf? Assuming you can use the phone to surf the net, which speeds are you getting? This is important since I wouldn't want to be in the 20k range. I believe a bluetooth connection will max at arount 100k, but that is good enough for me. Hopefully, it is connecting at the higher speeds.

According to sprint, they have enabled the tether profiles for both the treo 650 and the PPC-660X series.

How is the keyboard on that? would you consider it easy to enter text at a good pace? I'll be Iming on it so I want a check on that before I bother buying it. :)

I know what Sprint says (about bluetooth), but I would like some real world feedback prior to taking the plunge. Especially given their track record.

OK well I just got home from the gym so can test some stuff out. Currently have it connected to my SE HBH-65 headset, sounds awesome. When I connect my BT laptop I get the following profiles from the PPC6601:

File Push
Serial
vCard
Dial up Networking

So maybe we have obex, am checking to see if I can beam contacts, will report back.

SpineDoc

Well using file push it seems my laptop "fails to connect", but maybe I have it configured wrong.

SpineDoc -- Thanks for sharing your early experiences here. I have two questions related to the PPC-6600/6601 and EV-DO:

1) Does it run Skype for PocketPC over Vision? (www.skype.com if you're clueless what I'm asking)

2) Anyone know when using EV-DO, if I run Skype or an instant messenger on Vision, will that prevent me from receiving calls (i.e. send calls straight to voicemail)? I do realize that EVDO is not officially deployed yet by Sprint.

Thanks a million!

Unfortunately DO stands for Data Only, so it is still going to be like current vision services, just a heck of a lot faster. EV-DV would have supported Data and Voice simultaniously.

I have not tried skype yet, but I have streamed audio from di.fm and shoutcast.com and let me tell you, even the 128k streams are awesome with no hitches or lag. I could never say that about my old PPC using the T608 over BT, so this connection is faster, but I have not benchmarked it yet.

I will try streaming some video to it tonight, some of you may know my success in streaming live TV to my i600, should be a MUCH better experience on the PPC.

Also to add to my preliminary review, the battery life seems pretty darn good. I would say a full charge got me thru a full day of calls, playing around on it, browsing, installing programs, and using it at the gym as mp3 player and workout log.

Great photos, especially like your desktop.... would it be much to ask if you could take a shot of it open and closed next to a quarter and/or a pack of gum or something for some more size referencing?

Just got mine too!

First impression... It is very solidly built. The Windows OS is a lot different than palm and since I am so used to my T600... it'll take me a little while to get used to the MS schema. I will post more after I am familar with it.

Hey guys, whoever gets it please watch for this weird bug: Sometimes in a call I will get an endless beep and cannot hear the other side, but the call timer shows the call is still in progress. Very weird error that I cannot reproduce. I am afraid if it continues I will have to swap it out, sigh.

Streaming video works very nicely streaming about a 89k stream, which looks very doable on the screen. Anything over that starts to chop up a bit. That is from my home cable, and you all know cable upload can be crappy. Im sure straight streaming from the internet will be much better depending on the source.

Obviously not something that is supposed to be happening if it's happening on some calls and not on others... brand new dream phone or not I would put it right back in the box - I know it sux man. The only other thing it might be is if you changed some setting where the pda portion of the phone is running something while on a phone call - check the obvious, did you install something beyond factory? Probably should have given it a couple of days without touching anything to see if the unit itself is ok before everything was loaded on. Possible incompatibility with some program.

Also how do you stream tv from the internet? Software I would imagine or is there something I'm missing?

I got my 6601 last night. (Ordered it Mon night.) The form seems good though not quite what I was expecting for $630.

No problems getting it provisioned - none.

I only had one short conversation on it but both sides seemed normal, no issues.

The machine seems slow to me. I have been using a Dell X3i (400MHz) and it seems noticiably faster. I'm still eval-ing it though.

I am very concerned about battery life. It was on standby through the night (4.5 hours) and that cost 8% of the battery. I used the PDA function for about 20 minutes straight and it used 10%. Those numbers don't add up to anything close to a normal day for me. Even with two bateries (I know I'll have to get and carry a spare), I worry that it might not make it without recharging.

If you are doing more than talking then battery life may be an issue. I wish they had not put in the useless keyboard and just made a bigger battery, but oh well.

I purchased a minisync cable so whenever I have my laptop I can charge it.

yes smaller, faster, cooler & way better screen. Case is way smaller...but no output for stereo...just headphones with a 2.5 plug grrr. battery life better...and the dialer numbers is way bigger...plus this device's touch screen works way better with fingers then with the toshiba...i can do most things without the stylus

Thanks so much man... I just bought this thing and I am co-dependent on my PDA. Do you know if I can get yahoo IM for it? Also, I have created some wav file ringtones on my toshiba that are saved on my SD card, you got a clue that they will be compatible? Oh I am not an advanced user I have more of the novice questions. I also want to know if it actually shows the name and number of the person that you are calling while in a call. The toshiba 2032 does not. While I am on a business call if I forget who I am talking to I am screwed!
