I am using my Samsung A500 vision service with linux and am having a issue keeping my connection alive. Running a ping against yahoo.com seems to work fine however then ping decides to just stop and hang at a req #. Its not because it is waiting for a reply it just simply stops. I control c out and it reports 0% packet loss. It hangs sometimes at all different times. I have seen ping go up to 20,000 reqs before it dies and I have seen it died at 150 reqs. Any of you linux guys have similiar results?

It is likely that your signal is dropping out. If you have weak signal this can easily happen. Keep an eye on the signal when you notice these episodes.

This does not seem to be an issue since the ping in windows never stops, I am trying to figure out the difference in the linux ping and the windows ping...

There should be no difference. Just for kicks, keep an eye on the signal strength upon disconnection and tell me how it is. Also the signal strength during normal operation.

There shouldn't be but there appears to be. Signal strength seems to be okay, full at times. It doesnt drop connection totally.. it just d/cs as it would w/o a ping running. It just reconnects and disconnects over and over, as you know. In windows i can keep ping running for hours... Never heard anything like this huh?

A ping is a ping no matter what OS you are on. There should be no issues there. Try it on another computer and if you still have the problem then it is the phone.

Well, I think it has to do with the tcp stack and ppp daemon in linux. It works with same results on other linux machines I have here. I decided to just write a script to run a ping with 100 requests then exit and start over. That seems to work fine since the ping seems to stop working never before 100. Thanks for your help though!

Very strange. It would be nice to try it on a non-Linux machine there at your location and see if the problem still exists. My guess is that you would still have the problem.

I have, as I stated above it works fine in windows. I have tried it on a windows machine and there are no issues at all. Very strange.

Very very strange. Especially if you have tried it on more than one Linux machine.

PLEASE, for the love of god, tell me how you got your phone to work under linux. I can't get my A660 to work for the life of me. If i use pppd, i get to "modem ready", and then it times out after that.
i will fedex you a cookie if you can let me in on your trick, especially if you are using a samsung phone.

You need to disable the lcp checks. Find all lines in your ppp options file and comment out the ones that have "lcp" in them. See if that helps.
