Greetings to Sprintusers.com and all it's horses and men(Or is that Henchmen?),
I've just joined, so I thought I'd stay hi! so, Hi!

But more seriously:
I have a group of related questions regarding the PPC-6600; I've been researching it for some time, and have found lots of usefull info here about it, but I figured I'd post and ask for specifics...I've spent about a week or two gleaning what I could from the forums and other areas of this page, as well as phonescoop.com. so here are my questions:

1) will IM software, like AOL or ICQ run on the phone in such a manner that they could use vision to connect? And will Sprint get mad about it? (That's one reason I like the built-in keyboard) Explanation: My i-500 is *SUPPOSED* to run palm applications, which it does okay. But when I try to use ICQ on it to get on the ICQ network, via vision, the phone dials up automatically, but then ICQ gives me an unspecific error. And yes, I have tried dialing up before I click connect on the ICQ client. No 'dice' on that one.

2) What is the most accurate known cost of the phone? (Not the PPC-6601)

3) What is the most accurate known release date of the phone?

I have some other questions, but they haven't formulated into anything typable yet, so I might ask some more later, once i've gathered more information.

Thanks in advance! Oh and a big hi to Dave, the owner/admin, along with my thanks for starting this site and maintaining it so skillfully! (I might as well start my butt-kissing early :D )

Have you tried verichat with your i500. I use it with the Treo and it works great for IM apps. It does icq, aim, msn, yahoo, and I can't remember what else.

I would, but recently the graffitti pad on my device has gone bad or something...I was just asking out of curiosity, because I like answers to problems...The pad, no matter how many times I re-digitize it, fails to correspond with the printing on it. and i can't enter text on it that way anymore! it's irritating, I must admit. And a bad design...inculding some other flaws I could bring up, but I'll stick with my main thread on this one....would you, or anyone know about a multi-messaging client like verichat for pocketPC? Since i'll be gettting the PPC-6600 (I hope) I want to start preparing for it, and having a client like that would be heaveansent. (I use Trillian on my home PC and I LOVE it)

The digitizer problem is known and you should be able to swap it out with Sprint (if still under warranty) or lockline (if you have insurance).

well I'm glad I'm not the only one, but what advantage would swapping my phone be? wouldn't another of the same model have the same issue? or does this only effect certain handsets? But regardless, I got the phone via Costco through some kind of sale program there...A kisok with a Sprint rep in the warehouse, pretty much. I was surprised to see Costco carrying this phone model, as they don't usually carry super high-end stuff like that. So, I'm not too concerned about the digitzation problem, considering Costco has a return policy which allows me to turn the phone back in for a full refund...which I will use to put into the PPC-6600 that I've been eyeing. Im pretty sure it will be a hefty upgrade? I've used the Palm OS quite a bit before, having had an M515 that I sold to my father, who finally admits they are a great improvement over paper calanders. I think I prefer a more windows-style interface, not that I necessarily love Microsoft. I'm sure there are differences in the way the two OSes work, but I'll give this PocketPC thing a try and see if I like it.

Thank you! That gives me enough information to put my plans in motion. *Evil laugh*:hee:

I'll defiently look forward to playing with the phone at a Sprint Store. I generally like to try out a phone extensively before I buy it. The costco place just had dummy models and I certainly wouldn't have bought this phone (Sph-1500) if I had seen it in action.

To answer your question about applications accessing the internet, any pocket pc program that would expect internet access can use it while you are connected to vision. I doubt sprint is going to get upset because their vision plans for their PDA's are a little beefier. It depends on how your phone is activated (I've heard some people activating pda's on a regular vision plan) otherwise its like $5 ontop of the regular vision plan.

The only thing is, some programs are smart enough to initiate the dial out to vision, otherwise they will complain and fail. I usually just go into the connections pane and connect myself, or just hit a site with internet explorer, which automaticly connects.

well, like I described, ICQ would intiate a dialup, the pda would connect, then it would fail. I'm very Techy, and tried a variety of setting adjustements to get it to work, and failed. So I've given up on it. I even took vision off my phone, because that's what I wanted to use it for, mobile connectivity. I have no concerns with the Harrier working for my needs, but will definetly come here for advice if I need it. Thanks though!

By the way, how would I get a good cheap vision plan? My phone is an added phone to an existing account.

Also, i'm using a Palm OS based phone, and the ICQ client written for it. I figured it was the OS or something...*shrug* Like I said, I've given up on it.

Well, It sort of works, but it's not like GPRS on GSM carriers where you can use data and voice at the same time (though most phones tend to suspend the data transparently while you're on the phone)

With Vision on any Sprint phone, you can technically connect to vision, but when you are actively sending or receiving data your calls will go to voicemail. Your connection will go dormant after a period of inactivity, where you can stay connected to the internet, but the data channel will suspend allowing for windows of opportunity for you to receive phone calls. It checks with the vision servers periodically to see if there is new data packets waiting at that point. The data session will also suspend (though not always elegantly) when you initiate a phone call, and resume when you are finished.

Here is my real world experience with this kind of operation:

Eventually, vision will disconnect after a long while, but that may be because of a cell tower hand-over, or something that disrupts the session.

The main problem is that when you turn your pda off, it will disconnect from vision.

I have not seen how the process differs with pocket pc 2003 devices, as I am currently using my 2002 based Hitachi G-1000.

Hope this helps a little.

Lol, yeah I'm on my third G1000 I would assume, and this one now resets daily and the vibrate function doesn't work. I'm holding out to see if maybe I can get it exchanged over to a nice PPC-6600 based phone.

I see. Thanks for the info, it'll help me plan out my messenging on this new phone. Which I hope i'll be able to afford. With all the financial issues i'm having, i might have to wait until it's obsolete lol.

I thought of another question, finally ;),

Will this phone have a full or half duplex speakerphone? That's an unclear detail that isn't clarified in PhoneScoop.
