Ok, i know there are threads upon threads about this but i need a quick answer. Long story short, getting a divorce, have a new puter, no internet access on that one yet. How do i use my phone with my data cable to hook up to the net on my regular computer? Thanks for any help.

From all of the threads I've read here and talking to store reps, it's against your spcs contract to use the phone as a modem. Some one on here got charged mega bucks for doing that.

If you don't, well, that is what you need first. Don't know specifically how to do it with your phone. In general, there is no difference between a desktop and a laptop in this regard. You simply attach your phone to your computer in a manner identical to what is needed to sync it. You will need the appropriate modem drivers for it, particularly if the connection is via USB. You create a dialup "connection" entry via the dialup support in your OS (you didn't say what OS you run...) and then dialout to the number #777 just as if you were using a regular phone modem.

There is some fuzziness has to what is actually permitted by Sprint, but so far most people (including myself) report that as long as your usage is "casual" and "light", Sprint doesn't bother you (i.e. they would rather you send them the $10-15/month instead of you dropping Vision). Sprint is unwilling to define the fuzziness, but I would say that 10-30mb/month should be fine, while 1Gb/month or higher may not be okay.

jaime, you shouldn't have a problem with using the phone as a modem as long as you keep your usage to a minimum. (flying below the radar). as long as you do web browsing and email you should be okay. don't go on kazaa and start downloading full DVD rips because high usage will get it noticed.

btw, sorry to hear you are getting a divorce. if that is you in your avatar, your husband must be stupid.

Sprint cannot tell if you are connecting with a laptop, desktop, or on your handset. All they see is data usage so you need to keep it low.

The connection is made all the same as stated above. You will need a data cable for your phone and that is it.

Are you saying that Sprint has no possible way to tell? I think that is false. Simply looking at some of the data being passed tells all kinds of stuff that indicates the OS of the computer being used. Like the browser type, etc. Perhaps also the sheer data rates in bytes / sec possible on a laptop when browsing the net are a tattle tale.
I guess the question is what are they capable of looking at ?

Technically they could but they don’t. All they care about is data usage because that is what bogs down the network. Currently all they look at is raw data usage. However that does not mean they will look at other factors in the future. And yes you are correct that browser information etc is passed but again, they don’t look for that info as of yet.

I can vouch for the fact that Sprint doesn't know what kind of data (phone or laptop) is going through its network. When a retention rep was making me an offer, she checked my data usage while I was on the line to see if it paid for me to keep Vision. "You ARE making good use of Vision, so I'd recommend keeping it," she said. LOL, at that time I was surfing through my laptop for at least an hour a day. I've cut back considerably since then.

I don't think the content is always going to indicate the operating system. On my pocket pc phone I download web pages in the same format as I would on a desktop or laptop(except for a few exceptions). For example I can go on sprintusers.com on both, and it looks the same. I don't have to use the wap site on my phone. In that case, what would it matter if I used on my laptop as well, if my data is truly unlimited?

Web browsers send the server the browser type, among other data. You can tell if it's a Mac, a PC, PDA, etc. and what version it is as well.
It has little to do with the visual content. It's the 'behind the scenes' data that is the tattle tale.
