Suddenly having trouble browsing the internet in windows 98se with my notebook.

when i first boot up it will browse fine in either ie5.5 or mozilla 1.0 for
about 5 minutes, then all ability to browse ceases until i re-boot.

if i just boot and let it sit there for several minutes, it will not browse, i
must browse almost immediately after booting up.

example of what happens:
12:18 pm booted, opened web pages almost contuously 12:29 pm can't find page
12:35 pm booted, opened web pages almost contuously 12:43 pm can't find page
1:21 pm booted, opened one web page, closed browser 1:30 pm can't find page

when i lose the ability to browse webpages i am still capable of these operations:
i can successfully ping and tracert any url.
I can send and receive email from outlook express.
yahoo messenger runs.
i can play live poker interactively at partypoker.com using their client.
i can play live poker interactively at paradisepoker.com using their client.

the problem is not affected by the type of connection, it is the same on
wired lan, wireless pcmcia card, direct dial from modem, or via sprint #777.

it is apparently not a firewall problem. i cannot browse with zonealarm
de-activated either. in fact i can shut down all processes except the bare
essentials for running windows and i still have the problem.

i have uninstalled and re-installed dial-up networking.
i have uninstalled and re-installed tcp/ip
i have used the ie5.5 repair tool
i have re-installed windows 98se over itself to try to correct any OS problems.
i have run the system file checker and found no corrupted or missing files.
i have run adaware and cleaned out all suspicious files.
i have scanned for viruses using my current mcafee subscription and found nothing.
i have run the hardware diagnosis program in fix-it from Mejenix, no errors
i have run another professional burn-in test for over an hour, no errors.

I have tried a self-contained (run from cd) Knoppix version of Linux to see if
i can browse with it and it works great.
Mozilla debian package 1.5-3 will browse for hours under knoppix.
Konquerer will browse for hours under knoppix

doubt that the problem is ie5.5 related as i have the same problem with
mozilla when it is running under windows.

doubt that the problem is windows 98se related unless there is some
instruction embedded somewhere with a timer that makes it click out
after a certain number of minutes

i suspect the problem may be port related. possible that a certain port used
by both mozilla and ie5.5 running under windows98se is heating up and
losing function. Maybe the 2 browsers (Konquerer and Mozilla) running under
Linux (knoppix) don't use the same ports as when running under windows 98se??.

P.S. I have discovered that using my sanyo 4900 phone causes this problem but i don't know how to fix the problem. i found that i could restore an old
registry and the problem will disappear but the first time i use my phone to
connect my notebood via the #777 connection, the problem returns and
continues until i restore the old registry again.

Has anybody else had a similar problem and does anybody know how to fix it?.

Other than the obvious (kill Windoze 98SE), check your Winsockets. You may have duplicate entries in the computer that is confusing the registry.
