This weekend, I was flipping open my Sanyo 5500, and I noticed that it felt a little weird when I opened it. So I opened and closed it a few times, and it still felt that way. I started to investigate the hinges, and noticed that the right hinge had a straight line crack, and that the silver rivet on the side now turned when I flipped open/close the phone. I have two questions...

1) Is this a known problem with the Sanyo 5500? Or am I just unlucky that it happened?

2) I pay for the exteneded warranty(lockline I believe). Can I walk into a Sprint store and have it fixed on the spot? Will I have to go through the whole process of sending it out to get fixed? Or is this not covered by the warranty and I either have to buy a new phone or I am SOL and just live with it?

Ok, I know...more than two questions...sorry... :)

^cool, thanks shady. Did they give the phone back to you the same day? Or did they give you some kind of replacement phone until they got it fixed?

I had this same thing repaired over the weekend. They replaced the entire lower face which includes a new set of hinges. It cost me $20 and it was a 2 hour wait (Saturdays are busy.)

Broken hinges are a problem with a good number clamshell (flip) phones. Brand/Model doesn't matter. I personally, have never seen one break, but now that I have one, maybe mine will break too?

Broken hinges on the VM4500 are not covered under warranty ... it will be $20 to repair it at stores that are able to do repair

No, it's a big problem with Sanyo phones. It is NOT a big problem with the Toshiba VM4050.

Actually, both of mine were broken and my store replaced mine under warranty instead of fixing it. The lady assisting me told me it couldn't be fixed... looks like she didn't really know what she was talking about. Oh well, I have a shiny new phone now :) But yeah, looks like this is a fairly common problem with our phone.

If anyone let you tell the story by yourself, nothing is a problem with the Toshiba VM4050.

:good: exactly! show me any hinged phone and I'll wager any amount that someone has found out a way to break it.

Dude...chill....your precious toshiba is god, ok? Are you happy now?

Sheesh, from the way this guy protects his phone, you'd think he's flipping it closed around his ding dong and screwin it.
