View Full Version : am I the only one who thinks the 650 is not much of an upgrade over the 600?

The Treo 650 looks nice, but I don't think I'll dump my 600 just yet.

Between my Blackberry 7230 and my Treo 600, I'm not seeing any compelling reasons to upgrade to the 650.

If I were to improve the Treo, there are some basic things that the Treo 650 seems to not have taken care of:

1) when the Treo is in locked mode, it should show the current time. It's extremely annoying to have to put in the password to unlock the Treo just to see the time.
2) it should have voice memo recording capability. The lack of such a basic feature in an expensive device is very sad.
3) the Treo should be wi-fi enabled. Sadly it is not.
4) given the PDA's capabilities, you should be able to add a log of text (notes) to the call log. Sadly there is no such feature.
5) there is no way to search the address book. This is extremely silly, and I don't think the Treo 650 has fixed this. This is a basic Palm feature that is glaringly missing.

Maybe I'll wait til the Treo 900 :)

What address book are you talking about? I can search my contacts, which include addresses, but the first few letters

I guess since I don't use password unlock on mine, I don't have a problem with this. All I do is just hit one of the "home" buttons and get the time.

2) it should have voice memo recording capability. The lack of such a basic feature in an expensive device is very sad.

I've seen a few third party apps for that (can't remember the names though).

3) the Treo should be wi-fi enabled. Sadly it is not.

I believe that PalmOne might allow it to happen this time (I thought I read that they're going to look into using the T5 drivers or something)

4) given the PDA's capabilities, you should be able to add a log of text (notes) to the call log. Sadly there is no such feature.

I agree with that one.

5) there is no way to search the address book. This is extremely silly, and I don't think the Treo 650 has fixed this. This is a basic Palm feature that is glaringly missing.

Again, I don't know about you, but I don't have a problem searching my phone book. I just start typing a name, and it'll come up with matches. Not a problem.

Maybe I'll wait til the Treo 900 :)

Hopefully they won't disable those functions that work now in the T650, and just add more functions. I've even found a voice command program for the T600, just haven't played with it yet.

That is all it can do. In regular Palm PDAs you can do a true search which will look in all fields, including notes.

This limitation is very annoying, when I'm trying to search a keyword, that is not a name or address, but a note or a custom field. It makes the address book really not useful for anything but dialing.

You're not the only one who thinks the 650 isn't much of an ugrade.

I think the better screen on the new Treo is its biggest single selling point over earlier models. But for people that already own the 600, I'm not sure it is going to be worth forking over the $$$ just for the screen. The removeable battery thing is nice too, but for people with insurance on their Treo, if the battery ever dies on your phone, there will likely be a day when the 650 will be your replacement device.

I would have to agree that the screen 320x320 is a definite plus.

I still don't get what you're saying about searching the addressbook.

With the WiFi..... i feel like if the focus on the Treo is to be a phone 1st and a PDA second, then you'd primarily be using Sprint's service and not a WiFi hotspot.

My 2 cents.

Of course the 650 is a huge upgrade over the 600.
Lets see:
•Better Camera
•Better Screen
•Faster Proccesser
•BlueTooth
•New Keyboard w/added buttons
•Deeper SD Card slot
•Better Browser
•Plays and sends Movies
•Removable Battery

This is a partial list of Improvements. The only thing that I'm upset with is the 23mb of usable memory. This should have been increased to at least 64mb. At least there are programs like Teal Alias to help with that. If WiFi is a big deal for some, they can always get an SD WiFi card!

So I say, "Yes, the Treo 650 is a Huge Upgrade over the already great Treo 600!!!" :D

It a great phone! just remember its a phone first, and everything is focused on the phone side first.
You can search the address book by just pressing the first 3 letters of the name.
Palm makes sure the features that they do have Do work.

To do a search for a contact on the Treo 600, simply hit the alt key (little grey key in the bottom left hand corner of the keyboard) and then hit the "shift" key (with the magnifying glass on it). This will bring up the search box. Type part of a name, part of a number, something in the memo field, whatever you want and click search.

It will do a complete search for you.
