View Full Version : Samsung phones are crap

Don't buy a Samsung phone. I've had nothing but problems with my A700. When I called Samsung tech support, the rep basically said that there are no plans to issue any software fixes for the phone at this time. Now I'm stuck with a $399 phone that is full of bugs.
Here are the bugs:
Can't SEND messages using AIM. Can anyone else do so with this phone?
Can't SEND messages using MSN mobile. Can anyone else do so with this phone?
T9 text in Java apps doesn't "learn" new words. Is anyone else having this problem?
Problems getting Java apps such as Reqwireless' WebViewer and EmailViewer to work properly (both apps worked like a charm on my old phone). When the apps try to load up a web page or talk to an email server and don't get a response within 2 or 3 seconds, the app just sits there and doesn't resubmit the request. Eventually, the app times out. Anyone else?
Phone sometimes freezes up for no apparent reason. Anyone else?
MAJOR problems getting SnapSync to work with this phone. Anyone?

i do find this frustrating somewhat

actually with my webviewer i have had no issues at all viewing nasioc.com and espn.com with o issues whatsoever.
but these above point would be more of a reqwireless issue as they had not really designed the software for the A700 yet, maybe talk to them?
Phone sometimes freezes up for no apparent reason. Anyone else?
no, and like i said i had ONE freeze up when i downloaded an error filled image but i got rid of it, and it fixed that
MAJOR problems getting SnapSync to work with this phone. Anyone?
what kind of problems?
i can update my phonebook and my datebook /shrug
as i have said before, sometimes you just have to be smarter than the phone, and there was a firmware upgrade released for tomarrow and my rep said i can swing though and grab it
frankly i KNOW there had to be a bad batch of these out and about, but i got mine and it worked fine with everything.
I really don't care what people say cause mien works flawlessly, so i will nto take mine in to anyoen but MY rep nor anystore but MY store.
frankly i am happy I have this phone loosk better than any other phone sprint has IMO and since it is MY OPINION that wins over the tosh fanboi posts haha

Not to be a ass but it's your fault your stuck with the phone. 14 days is enough time to figure out if the phone is a keeper or not. sell it and go get your perfect phone. I think in the pasted samusng took there time on getting a software update out but with the 700 they got a update out pretty quick. That's a good sing.

...Now I'm stuck with a $399 phone that is full of bugs... why didn't you just return it before the 14 days were up?...did you like it? i usually know if i'm going to keep a phone within 3 or 4 days. (or even less)
ebay the phone. or work around the these small problems...
1.use AirIM.
2.if the phone doesn't learn a new word- you don't like it?!? just use alpha for a second and type the word.
good luck.
(btw, webviewer works for me.)

sorry if my posted was a little strong but I had ruff day at work today and need to go to bed. The tittle of the thread hit a nerve. I'll use any manufacture if I like the phone, so it's not that I just use samsung phones. Just because the 700 has a few bugs doesn't mean all samsung phones suck.

Sorry you don't like your A700, I recommend eBaying it and purchasing another phone (like the VM4050,) or seeing if someone will swap phones with you. Not me, of course, because I happen to use AIM quite often on my phone.

If Sprint was smart, they would start implimenting it into their phones much like Cingular, T-Mobile, and ATTW do....The online thing takes forEVA

I just got back from the Sprint store after getting the latest software update - XJ13 - for my A700 phone. It's freezing less, but I still have all the problems that I mentioned earlier.
Samsung's so-called customer service basically told me "too bad". I realize that sometimes even the best brands put out defective products, but Samsung is showing ZERO support to their customers for KNOWN ISSUES with their product.
NEVER again will I buy anything made by Samsung.

Enmulout: Read some of my other threads. I've been trying for THREE WEEKS to get Samsung, the local Sprint store, and the corporate customer service reps to either fix this damn phone or give me a refund. All three have repeatedly told me that I cannot return or exchange the phone. Believe me, I have spent a TON of time dealing with the so-called "customer service" people at all of the above.

Enmulout: I have spoken to the managers and explained the problem again and again - even drove all over town going to several different Sprint stores. Also, I've called customer servie at least 50 times and spoken to different reps each time. I'm convinced that hell will freeze over before Sprint or Samsung allows me to return this $399 defective product.
I can't even begin to think how many HOURS upon HOURS I've spent dealing with Sprint and Samsung over the last three weeks.

I agree, Samsungs have alit of bad apples... VGA 1000 is of a very poor design as well as the 660. (So far I don't mind the 680 yet....) The A700 looks too pathetic to be a real phone, haven't sold one yet, no one in my store has yet either....... I think most people are like me, waiting for Sanyo to put out the 7400 and 5600.
Sorry about your bad luck with Sprint.... Had some problems with em myself today, ended up calling Buissness solutions.... Those guys rock.

Is your store in the K.C.,MO area?
There is no phone "w/o bugs". I had problems with my first A700 but after swapping it out, I have had no problems what-so-ever. Aol is problematic no matter what service you use. It is AOL's attempt to make their service unique and user-dependent that causes the problems. I agree that CS is a headache, but Sprint PCS CS is much better than other wireless providers I have dealt with (and I have dealt w/ them all). I was also told that there is a software update "in the works" for the A700. Samsung claims that all of the bugs experienced w/ the A700 are software related and they will have them "fixed" soon. I won't hold my breath, but overall I am happy my w/ A700 and would happily purchase another one (maybe yours if you continue to be frustrated w/ it ;) ). Keep trying w/ CS and tech support, Sprint does have very knowledgeable people who will bend over backwards to try and help you. Just because they don't know or are reading from a script doesn't mean they don't deserve common courtesy. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you. I am glad you were able to vent, and I hope you feel better. :D

Thanks to everyone for their replies.
To those that basically say that the phone works fine form making calls and taking pictures, and that I should just accept the fact that T9 Text, AIM, MSN Messenger don't work (though thanks to the person that told me about AirIM, BTW), I have the following to say:
I bought the $399 A700 so that I could use all the features that I mentioned. Yes, the A700 works fine for making calls, but I paid $399 and expected the advertised FEATURES to work. Had I just wanted a simple camera phone, I would have bought one of the cheaper models.
It's like saying that I shouldn't make a big deal because the new BMW that I bought (I wish) has a faulty sunroof, power windows that don't work, A/C that doesn't cool, etc...yet it still gets me from point A to point B. Well, If I just wanted to get from A to B, I would have bought a used Yugo. When I'm paying a premium price for a BMW / A700, I expect that all the bells and whistles will work as expected. :)
Don't buy a Samsung phone. I've had nothing but problems with my A700. When I called Samsung tech support, the rep basically said that there are no plans to issue any software fixes for the phone at this time. Now I'm stuck with a $399 phone that is full of bugs.

I really wouldn't buy any Samsung phone until they get their act together... I used to be a swatter at Best Buy, and about 25% of my conversations went like this:
Customer: "I hate Sprint. I get terrible reception and I drop so many calls."
Me: "Oh, you have an old Samsung phone don't you... is it the A460 or the N400?"
Customer pulls out A460. "Yeah... how'd you know?"
I used that every time, and not once was I wrong....

During 9 months at BB I saw TWO 8100's returned. Every other phone was Samsung. Quality is certainly not their strong point....
The vice president of Samsung visited our store from Japan (seriously...). He tried to secret shop me, and I pushed him to get a Sanyo phone (heh...). After I failed, and his henchman revealed his identity I told them straight up that I wouldn't sell their phones until they put something out that worked!

try basing their reputation from something other than 2 phones that happened to have many problems...
Lets look at reputation.. These are the issues that I can recall off the top of my head.. I know there are more but most have needed 2 - 4 software updates to resolve most issues.
Samsung 3500 - Ear piece kept dieing out.. Redesigned 5 times.. still had the issue.
Samsung 8500 - major issue with flipping phone closed and it powered off (I had 6 replaced personally)
Samsung A460 (4 software versions) - blank screen, random loss of phone book, poor signal
Samsung A500 (4 software versions) - digit dial failure, mic 908 error for vision browser.. too many to list..
Samsung N400 - camera not found issue when connecting, phone would freeze/lockup, charging port was too short and would cause stretching, poor charging, or no charging at all due to loose port.
I330 - phone book matchup failed with incoming call, echo in ear piece, sms messages received multiple times..
I500 - browser would run slow or freeze.. timing out (software related). 2nd software recalled..
A620 - ringer would not play through headset, battery stops charing if phone gets too hot, phone skips pictures when reviewing.
A680 - LCD color loss, had reconditioned A680's available prior to our initial shipment of them.. Hmmmm..
A700 - lockup issues.
Does Sanyo have nearly these types of bugs??
All sanyos had the voice dial issue..
Vm4500 - hardware issue for redialing.. connecting.. etc.
Some could argue the earpieces don't sound the way they should..
Not nearly the issues that Samsung has had.. That's why Sanyo always ranks near the top..

Wasn't there a few other Sanyo issues you forgot to mention such as the 4900 bad browser (original software) and echo problem which continued on to the 4920? Some have also complained about a roaming setting issue with the 4920. I also remember the 5300 and 8100 having earpiece volume which was too low and needed a software revision to correct So yes Sanyos have less problems than Samsungs but still have their share.

Sorry, I don't consider the ear piece being a defect in the software/hardware. I consider increasing the volume an enhancement to the phone. And the 4900 had an echo in the speakerphone, not the ear piece. I already mentioned the earpieces.. I never said Sanyo's were perfect.. but they are far more reliable then Samsungs..
Heck, The A620 alone had 32 enhancements/changes to correct issues with the phone during the last software release.. You'll never find a Sanyo to date that has had nearly the issues Samsung has.. Samsung has had major issues with almost every handset.. you don't see Sanyo having the same problems.. To me it seems like Samsung doesn't do enough testing prior to release.. where Sanyo does.. IMO

Nope.. believe it or not.. I don't bash our phones.. just like I don't bash our competitors.. I let customer pick the phone that best suits them.. after all every phone has a 1 yr warranty..
I'm just stating facts.. Sanyo's ARE more reliable.. I think Samsungs have great features like name dial that Sanyo's don't have.. I think some of the Samsungs look nicer then the Sanyo's.. I wish Sanyo would come out with a phone the size of the A680.. There are many things I like about Samsung.. but I'm talking quality/reliability..
I'm glad you've had zero issues.. there are tons of customers that don't have issues with Samsungs.. but the fact is.. the defective rate is much much higher..

3G cables you out there? I agree with you cruznis300 about how samsung needs to test there phones out more before they release them. You left the N200 out. That phone was terrible. I really don't care for sanyo's earpieces as of now. I losted count how many times tonight I had to hit retry surfing the net on my 700 tonight. It usally went throught the second time but I don't remember that happening with any other vision phone.

It may sound that way.. but that's not true.. the Samsung defect rate is still much higher then Sanyo.. and that still doesn't explain all the software glitches and mechanical failures that Sanyo's just don't tend to have.
It's all about testing properly.. Samsung does get it right.. unfortunately it seems that it takes 3 or 4 software updates to resolve the issues.
To have sanyo have to fix a voice dialing bug, or increase the earpiece volume is extremely minor then blank screens, phones freezing, charging ports failing and batteries crapping out.

The 8200's do sell extremely well.. but they don't compare to a $29.99 flip phone (vi660) especially when one has to put down a deposit. We sell a lot of those phones.. A LOT

Speaking of the vi660 wasn't there both a hardware revision and software revision just a month or two after the phone was released? I had to return two of them because of crackling earpieces.

Nope, not kidding here. Samsung just are poor quality phones in general expect maybe their PDA/phones. Look around you at SU and HOFO! I have seen more negative posts than positive posts on Samsung performance. I, believe the A500 issues was the most talked about topic of the year when it was release. Now this year may be about the A700 issues?

Oh I know exactly what you are saying. I think some people set their mind on one brand and that is all they can see or think about. I myself have had good luck with Samsung, and Sanyo. Luckily, that keeps my mind open to all manufactures. In no way do I think one is the best ever and one is the worst ever. It keeps me from feeling the need to bash brands on a forum. :)

You are the chosen one then? Try the earpiece with a hearing aid you may hear it quite well. But, my point is all make and model phones need better testing period! The software, hardware, interaction with the network in regards to voice and data. Testing needs to be more indepth. How did SPCS not see that the data side of A700 was having problems esp. with Sprint TV coming out? :-\

There is a reason why I have a Sanyo, and yes, I did consider an A620 a couple months ago. :)

Doubtful. There are many many people out there who own the a620 and have not heard any beeping or hissing, so why don't y'all get off his case about it. Remember, people will whine and moan, and start a thread about a problem (beeping and hissing) before people will praise and commend, and start a thread about a phone with no problems. Either way. I also have a Samsung and am proud of it. The MM A700 is great. The only problems I've had are with Sprint, not Samsung. Everyone I show the phone to either buys it or will buy it when they can. The photo's look great on the screen, the sound is excellent, the MobiTV on the A700 at 15 frames per second is watchable, and so on and so on. Sure some people had problems, but as I can see Samsung is issuing patches on a timely basis! It's well worth the $195. that I paid for it! :)

No, not a Samsung employee...and no, I don't consider myself "lucky"...
Samsung's are great phones in my oppion. They are the most refined, with the best refinement...something that can't be said of Sanyo...
I mean, when I had my blue and gold 8100, it looked great on the exterior...but the screen was subpar...
Now to look at the 8200 for example...the 8100 has much better refinement than that phone on the exterior...
Samsung's are naturally the best at refinement..
example...no exposed screw heads, changing color logo's, magnets fot the flip, cool to the touch metals...somethings you will NEVER find on any Sanyo...

This has gone too far...For all of you Samsung hating people...
Samsung, the South Korean handset maker, increased its sales of mobile phones by 51 percent in the third quarter, putting it in a virtual tie with Motorola as the world's No. 2 cellphone maker, according to a report released on Wednesday by Strategy Analytics, a research firm. Samsung sold 22.7 million phones from July through September, compared with 15.5 million a year earlier, according to preliminary figures tracked by Strategy Analytics. The rise gave Samsung a 13.54 percent share of the global handset market, compared with 13.9 percent for Motorola.I'm sure that Samsung is the worlds number 2 phone maker because they are "crap"...:eyeroll:

I wouldn't be b****ing here if Sprint and/or Samsung would just belive their customers and fix the problems with my phone. That is all I really want. I paid $399 for this phone and I expect all the features to work!
If Sprint and Samsung didn't have 1-800 numbers for the customer service lines, I'd have a pretty hefty phone bill by now.

Been there, done that (several times).
I HAVE gone to the local Sprint store, and then another Sprint store and even driving 50 files to Sprint stores far, far, away from home home and work. And they all basically say that I can't return the phone because the 14 day trial period has elapsed!!!!
If you can personally call Sprint PCS customer service and get them to authorize the return of my phone, I will never b***h about Samsung again (though I will warn anyone posting a message like "I'm thinking about buying the A700...").
Been there, done that. Been there, done that. I have called SPCS CSRs 68 times (really) in the past three weeks and they all basically tell me that I can NOT return my phone and get a refund! I have been polite and have asked to speak to a supervisor - and waited on hold for a long time each time for the supervisor to get on the line. Belive me, if it were that easy, I would have done that a LONG time ago!

Kevin.. just an fyi.. despite what customer care "authorizes" or notes your account, they can't make a store return your phone. The 14 days is over.. each division is separate.. IF someone says, I'll just "note your account" stating for them to return it.. they have absolutely no power over a retail store.
Nightwing.. ERP can only be added within the first 30 days of activation.. Also, if there is not physical damage, they will instruct every customer to go into a SPCS store for a warranty replacement.

i can understand the man's anger - 400 bucks for a new piece of equipment is (to me) a lotta money - i keep my end of the bargain by paying over $100 a month - i ask sprint pcs to keep their end of the bargain - (and started with spcs when it opened using the only phone available - a sony with a slide earpiece) - never had a samsung - but i have had good experiences with my sanyos (well - my 8100 does not ring for incoming calls - a mild annoyance for a phone, ay?) - but here is what i don't understand - its a phone - not a lap dance or a cure for cancer - brand loyalty is admirable i guess but jeez - a little perspective
now when can i see the 5600 manual and when does it ship? - i miss a phone that actually notifies me of an incoming call

Instead of getting the store involved...either call Executive services or work with customer care instead of having them note your account-they can then place the order themselves and send the a replacement phone to you. When you receive the replacement you send the defective one back...I did that with my 5500 when my store refused to help me because my 5500 passed the test but redialed every other call.

Kind of off topic here, but I've never had a samsung phone. I do however have a Sanyo 8100. It's been very good to me. I'm kind of hard on cell phones. I've beaten this thing, thrown it I don't know how many times and the thing just keeps on working. It's like a Timex, takes a licking, keeps on ticking. I've thrown it, (and I do mean THROWN it) numerous times. The only damage has been some minor scratches. The battery usually pops out when I've thrown it, but otherwise this phone is built solid and still works great. :)
Dam, you are hard on phones. You should be a product tester on a phone's durablity? ;-)

Yeah, I know. Back when I had T-mobile, I had to replace 2 Nokia 8290's when I had them. The one the screen broke and the other one the just basically fell apart. Again, my right arm kind of lost control and the phone went flying in the air  . Oops.

Ever consider a baseball career? That right arm may make you some $$$. LOL!
Been there, done that (several times).

KevinK,
Go to this thread (http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52771) I started and test your phone (every phone reported in the poll so far has this "problem". Notice that your phone will reset. (And any others, please check yours as well, it's kinda weird/cool  )
Now, take the phone to the store, kindly explain that your phone is now resetting when you try and create a bookmark in the (built-in, not 3rd party) browser. Repeat it a time or two in front of the store rep. Ask them to fix it or order you another phone (at this point, you will get a refurb so plan on it). The rep will look up thier list of available replacements and offer you another A700 if it's available, or they may offer an alternate phone as well. Decide BEFORE GOING IN what would would accept as a replacement (if they offer it, it's up to the store). I don't know how they would handle any price difference since the A700 is one of the most expensive models in the store right now.
KevinK, still with me here? This should be a relatively sure fire way of showing a repeatable problem with the base phone. I don't think it's a reason to get rid of my A700, but it should be enough to get the store rep to swap out your phone (but the replacement will also have the problem at this point). Then you can stop your complaining about how Sprint raped and pillaged your wallet. You might even get a phone that you like better (unlikely though I'd guess).

Thanks Gof.
I did your little test (in the other thread) and (surprise, surprise), my phone rebooted itself.
I'm going to vote this evening, but will be heading to my local Sprint store - actually one about 30 miles from home that actually provides something called "customer service" unlike the store near me - Wednesday nithg and will conduct your little experiment in front of them.
I'll keep ya posted

During 9 months at BB I saw TWO 8100's returned. Every other phone was Samsung. Quality is certainly not their strong point....
The vice president of Samsung visited our store from Japan (seriously...). He tried to secret shop me, and I pushed him to get a Sanyo phone (heh...). After I failed, and his henchman revealed his identity I told them straight up that I wouldn't sell their phones until they put something out that worked!
last i checked, samsung was korean. are they based out in japan? hmmmm....
Thanks Gof.

Well, you people here - especially the Samsung shills - won't be hearing me complain about my A700 anymore.
After getting nowhere with Sprint or Samsung level 2 support (who even today STILL denies that there are ANY problems with the A700, BTW), I decided "to hell with Sprint and Samsung". I call Sprint customer service a little while ago, explained my situation AGAIN (the logs of my calls alone should have forced Sprint to get a larger hard drive on their server by now) and said that I wanted to cancel my service. I told them that I don't care if I have to pay a cancellation fee. I don't ever want to deal with Sprint or Samsung again after all BS I've had with my A700. Guess what? The rep then said "what phone WOULD you like then?" and now Sprint is going to be shipping me a Treo 650 in 3 - 5 business days. I just need to pay the $200 difference. No more BS with SnapSync or having my email and web applications stall all the time.
The End

Well me and my G/F rented those row boats at central park and I managed to flip the boat over somehow, after rescuing my G/F cause she can't swim, I stayed in that fithly water to retrieve her phone and my phone as they were in her pocketbook, it took sometime but I wasn't coming out of that water without them. It was quite a seen, Police, fire department, scuba divers, parks dept. everyone responded, it was kinda nice when I did come out of the water and everyone cheering as I held up the pocketbook with the phonesin it, what a day, that was just another excting day in NYC. I thought it would make the news but it did'nt.So if that phone can handle that nasty water then it's a solid phone I'm still using it.

what was really cool was it was working while there was water still in the screen and it made the screen look transparent, I kinda wish it would of stayed that way it looked unique, my G/F phone LG on the other hand needed to have the battery replaced but it worked fine after that.

I jumped into a pool with my Motorola C331g in my pocket...next thing I know somebody is fishing something out of the pool saying, her look, somebody's cell phones in the pool...my stomach sank...but it powered up after 2 days...but the 7, 8, 9 row of keys would not operate...RETURN

well, my phone is pretty tough, taken many a fall/toss by the baby, but samsung's customer support is pretty much nonexistent in my experience.
Reception stinks, too.
Even an external antenna make NO difference to signal strength whatsoever.
One funny thing about this phone, it will pick up a roaming tower from Sedalia rather than Macon or Columbia while south of Moberly (all in N/central MO), but Sedalia is the farthest away!

lol...actually i don't use telus, i use aliant (telus thinks that i have to call about 5 different ppl b/c there is a glitch in there system that says i need a 600.00 dep  ) but the screen on the a460 is covered under a lifetime warrenty thru samsung so i have no worries there....the a660 is a really bad phone for sprint but we have no problems with it on our network... not too sure why that is, b/c most of the issues that i have heard are not network related.

Hmmm interesting: assuming you are meaning the Vice Chairman of Samsung (Corporate) - He wouldn't be from Japan as Samsung is a Korean company. See: here (http://www.samsung.com/AboutSAMSUNG/ELECTRONICSGLOBAL/ViceChairman/PersonalProfile/) .
The Name "JONG YONG YUN" is NOT Japanese...
--
Back to the topic: I think Samsung has really improved quality as of late (A880, A800)... And compared to Sanyo anymore, I think they're on about the same level.
The 8100 was a good phone, software wise, but hardware wise it wasn't very good at all... (Cracked Hinges, etc) -- and even my 8200 isn't holding up very well...
So anymore I don't think Sanyo's the "stuff"...
