View Full Version : Unique Add-a-Line Situation

Hello people....it's been awhile since I posted here. I need some advice on a very unique situation involving adding a phone to my account.

My wife's AT&T contract just ended and we decided that we would add a line to my PCS account and she would get a new phone w/vision. We would share the minutes of a new plan between us. Here is my dilemma:

-I am moving to the Washington DC area because of work and my wife will be remaining in the NYC area to finish her Master's Degree.-

Will Sprint allow me to change my current NYC-based plan to a DC-based plan, while at the same time allowing my wife to have a NYC-based plan for herself?

Is this confusing? I have a headache just writing it.

Would it be easier to have her just get her own plan?

Any help would be appreciated.

You can stay where you are with your number...

I got my mom a phone for her 60th and added her to my plan. SHe lives in NY State. I got her a 201 (New Jersey) exchange, since that is where she makes alot of her calls. Mine is a 202 (Washington, DC) area code, since that is where I am. I added the F&CA plan for $5, which gives you free roaming for up to half of your minutes (500 min plan, then you can use up to 250 mins for roaming).

It works great.

Ok so if we go into the store up here in the Palisades Center they can add her line to a new plan and I can then change my number to a 301 (Rockville) number without any problems?

Also...."F&CA"?

Thanks!

Yep you can ask for the area code you want when you activate her line....Remember the FC&A doesnt qualify as PCS to PCS calling when you two are on the phone at all day (been there done that).

CHECK THE OFFER THAT YOU GET IN THE NEW YORK STORE AND COMPARE IT TO THE OFFER THAT YOU GET IN THE MARYLAND STORE OR WITH C/S, BEFORE YOU DECIDE. (ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE OUT OF CONTRACT.)

HERE IS THE NUMBER TO ONE OF THE GOOD MARYLAND STORES, 240-456-0456. THE MANAGER'S NAME IS JAMES. HE IS ONE OF THE MANAGER'S THAT WILL TELL THE CUSTOMER THE TRUTH, AND NOT JUST WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR.

ALSO, SINCE SPRINT HAS FREE NATIONWIDE LONG DISTANCE AND THEY ALSO HAVE UNLIMITED PCS2PCS, IT WON'T MATTER IF YOU HAVE A 301 EXCHANGE AND YOUR MOTHER HAS A 201 OR 212 EXCHANGE, THE CALL WILL STILL BE INCLUDED.

IN THE D.C. METRO AREA, SPRINT HAS PLENTY OF TOWERS, SO ROAMING SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM, EXCEPT ON THE SUBWAY SYSTEM. (VERIZON AND NEXTEL HAVE THAT JUST ABOUT ALL LOCKED UP.)

GOOD LUCK,

If you have PCS2PCS on your acct and share minutes, then both of you can talk to each other all you want w/o a using a single plan minute. It doesn't matter where either of you are. You can be in NY and She can be in Cali. The minutes are pcs2pcs no matter where you are.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE A SHARED MINUTES PLAN TO USE PCS2PCS.

AS LONG AS YOU ARE CALLING A SPRINT PHONE, THEN IT IS A PCS2PCS CALL AND THE MINUTES WILL REFLECT IN THE PCS2PCS LINE ON YOUR BILL.

OF COURSE AT NO EXTRA CHARGE AND NO DEDUCTION FROM YOUR ANYTIME MINUTES.

I think it's time to can the area plan(s). I have an area wide that gives me 1,000 minutes. I could get 500 nationwide minutes at the same price. Add the extra money you save from cancelling the phone and buy nationwide minutes.

Area plans cannot get F&CA (not FC&A) so no roaming on other networks for free. PCS2PCS does not cover Sprint non-area roaming minutes. I just called Sprint to check this but think about it, it makes no sense to offer area wide plans then allow you to leave for free. RL minutes may cost too out of area. AFAIK, you are not warned when on the Sprint network and out of your area. You only purchase area wide plans for people who *never* leave the area, and when they do leave, let them know how much calls will cost or commandeer the phone.

F&CA allows up to half your *used* minutes, not your total minutes. Does anyone know if the free PCS2PCS and N&W minutes count, doesn't make sense? You can't buy a 3500 minute plan expecting to use 1750 roaming minutes in BFE for a measly $5. If you want to roam for 1750 minutes you need to buy a phone and let it sit dialed up to burn up Sprint minutes, or use it on a shared plan where someone else is sure to be burning up the minutes.

>YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE A SHARED MINUTES PLAN TO USE PCS2PCS.
It isn't free without a shared plan unless you have it from an old deal. Early this year free PCS2PCS was $0 to anyone on a 2 year agreement and stays $0 after the agreement expires so long as you don't mess with it. Now $0 free PCS2PCS is available to all phones on a shared plan. Since it works with all Sprint cell phones whether or not they are on your plan, it's a no brainer to get free PCS2PCS any way you can. At the most, it will cost $5. It's works great too. I am looking at my usage online and I see 1500 N&W, 1500 PCS2PCS for this month. Add those 1500 PCS2PCS to the 400 peak minutes we are already over for this month and it looks like something free is finally worth more than we pay for it.

>AS LONG AS YOU ARE CALLING A SPRINT PHONE
The usual caveats apply. Must be on Sprint network, ...

For the $100/mo of two separate area plans, you can have a nice nationwide shared plan that doesn't trap the two of you into small areas without access to F&CA roaming. When you both go on a trip, neither phone is cost effective. Then later, when you decide to switch to a nationwide plan, you start your 2 year contract all over. The Piper says "Pay up!"

PCS2PCS (http://www1.sprintpcs.com/explore/ueContent.jsp?scTopic=unlimitedPcsToPcsCalling) $5 or $0
Free & Clear America (http://www1.sprintpcs.com/explore/ueContent.jsp?scTopic=roaming) Typically $5

Also keep in mind that when you phone is using analog roam it is only good for half its battery life. Sprint phones do not like analog and it really eats the battery life up fast, so you are looking at about 1.5 hours of talk time max on analog roam on a full charge. So, its fairly difficult to eat up alot of roaming minutes unless you phone is attached to a charger.

Do you have a national plan? (do they even have local?). I would think it would work fine as long as they have server in dc, and you're on their network. Roaming on other networks will cost extra, and as said, you should add f&c
