View Full Version : Mini Sanyo 7400 review
ZEROpcs
10-21-2004, 12:33 AM
First thing I want to point out is that this was a pre production build of the software, the Sanyo rep who was carrying this phone openly stated that “anything could change between now and the release”. That said, I had a small amount of time playing with this phone tonight and have created this mini review of sorts to try to give a better idea of what we are in store for.
The phone is very solid and very sturdy. The faceplates take effort to remove, which impressed me because I was thinking crappy Nokia quality when I first heard about the ability to remove them. However I was wrong. Typical Sanyo click into place when it is fully opened. The screen seemed nicer than the 5500; however there was not one near by to compare them. THE BACKLIGHT IS BLUE!!!! For those that I know will ask.
Things that make it stand out:
- My Buddy is a rat
- Much nicer icon driven menus, this is what led me to believe that the screen is nicer than the 5500, the icons put the 5500’s to shame.
- With the phone closed you can voice dial a RL. To clarify, you press the speaker button and the voice activation comes up, you say “ready link (insert name here)” and it will initiate the call. No opening of the flip required. Unfortunately it didn’t appear that you could scroll through the RL list and initiate a call with the flip closed (except for the last number dialed) unless you use the voice method.
- Remembers T9 (like the 8200)
- Flashlight feature (like the 8200)
- Using the left “D” pad button opened a shortcut menu as opposed to only being able to assign a single shortcut. This allows for the ability to assign multiple shortcuts (up to 7) in its own menu.
- Ringers sound utterly amazing.
I was not able to make a call with the phone, so I do not know what the earpiece sounds like. The rep was also unsure of an exact release date, however he said: “when you see it on phone scoop it is about 2 weeks away”, when I told him it was on phone scoop already he seemed surprised.
If you have any particular questions that I may be able to answer please ask.

how did the rubber rugged grippy do-hickey feel? And would you give up your 8200 for it?
Hmm, if I get this phone for hubby when we port him over after Christmas, I know he won't be using it right away....muahahaha.

The "rubber rugged grippy do-hickey" felt very solid. I plan to give up the 8200 once i am able to make a call and hear how it sounds. The readyLink features allone will push me in that direction.

If the 7400 is going to be 399.99 then I think I will wait for the lg 535 or the 5600. The 5600 is supposed to have a QVGA screen if im not mistaken.

sqw this phoen up close and personal the other day, i was hyped for the look, btu i felt it and played wit it...not my gravy baby. the A700 is better ringe sound IMO, btu then if you use RL the A700 is useless to you, ther phoens both have good features and thier strong points.
700: i liek the screen, and the MM feature of it better than the one on the 7400
7400
pics and video with door shut, and RL
being as i don't use RL, and the pics and video are comprable to the A700, only advantage is the quickview......i chose to stay with the A700, but i tell you what they are comprable.
oh and the 7400 was to big for my liking and the rubber dohickeys were a little to much as well.

i would nto say it WAY HUGER
but it felt bulkier in my hands, btu that may be the speakerphone/RL portion of it
if you think the a700 is huge you must be crazy for all technology in the phone it is tiny, the new 7400 is a little larger

In all honesty the camera on the samsung isnt all that. yes the pictures hold their pixel count at a larger size, however for me, as a buisness user, i would much rather have a speaker phone (RL is a plus only because i have about 30 contacts on it) and a crappy camera than a marginally crappy camera and no speaker.

okay...now i've been reading everybody's words, and i'm wondering if i should wait for the 5600 as well. i've been talking on my busted 8100 which lacks an antennae, and i'm not trying to expose myself to any further potential for brain cancer or something. does anyone know how much longer the 5600 will take to be released after the 7400? is it worth the wait? i mean, the qvga display, and the supposed 1.3megapixel is appealing, but is it that much of a difference to what the 7400 has to offer? i'm a newbie, so take it easy on me, peoples. ciao.

There is going to be a 2 - 4 month gap in between the 7400 and 5600 ... and nothing is really *confirmed* on the 5600 ... but it should have those features ... it's up to you ... nobody has used either phone so it's pretty much whatever you feel is best ... and any Sprint store can get you a new antenna for $20

Wow, the future is here!
LOL, no kidding.
First off, have you seen any Samsung digital cameras? If I want a megapixel+ image, I use my Canon camera. The camera on my cellphone is for viewing ON MY CELLPHONE, and VGA quality is fine. Secondly, a speakerphone is much more important to most of us than a 1 megapixel Rotating! camera. Readylink is also a nice feature.
Look, you have the 5500 at $350. For $50, MM features and improved RL performance make a big difference to me.
I can't justify $50 for that Samsung. :eyeroll:

Now THATS funny. How can you say that "nothing is really "confirmed" on the 5600"? The FCC has already reviewed, tested and approved the phone. They can go back and make changes to it now. Too funny!

Well, I searched on the FCC site and couldn't find anything. Got a link? Or do they not post them until much later?

i can't justify getting any sanyo phone, sorry just can't do it.
my buddy has the 8200, nice enough i guess but the screen quality sucks and so does the camera, and if you don't use the readylink why have the speakerphone since the quality sucks more than a prome date on her knees.
i enjoy my bluetooth earpice i carry with me, the camera is good enough when i don't want to haul around my nice camera, after all thats all a camera on the phone is used for anyway, taking quick shots not high quality ones, and the barrel camera i have had no issues with yet.
each phone poses unique qualities for each user, the screen quality and bulkyness of the 76400 turned me off, and the camera sucks and again not using speakerphone/RL why the **** have it on the phone anyway?
not worth the price tag they are offering thats for sure, but neither was the samsung, but being a fan of sprint and al the features i wanted came on the 700 and the 7400 is/was not out still.
and IMO sanyos are small, but bulky and thats mainly because of the speakerphone/RL pice, to bulky for those phones, yeah it may be shorter than the 700, but the 700 does't feel bulky in my hands, but then again i don't have the hands of a child either so /shrug
Yeah, I am passing up on the 7400 myself also. The 5600 is what I am waiting for, QVGA and 1 megpixel camera! 8-D

you gain alot more then that. From what I have been told, the phone is alot more easier to use. Just to use as a phone, they have made it better. People tend to forget the primary purpose of the phone is to talk on, and from what has been mentioned to me, the 7400 is alot better then previous Sanyos. Plus, I don't think $399.99 is the right price for the phone, considering the VM4500, so I think it might be more towards $379.99 or so. Could be wrong though. I got my eyes on the LG or 5600 though...those will be kickass :D

Yeah looks like it...and for some people...the speaker...you would be surprised how many people want a speaker phone...doesnt matter what they say about "1/2 duplex or full"...its a convience I wouldnt give up unless I really needed to.
Also, and this is very subjective, but based on what I see at work, the Sanyo will sell more simply because of the design of it. A few customers have complained about the A700 and its size, but take that all as opinion. The 7300 is a popular phone, so I dont see why the 7400 wont be just as popular, considering alot of customers have mentioned that they would want the rugged style of the 7300 but a camera. I honestly think this phone will be a good seller, but I'm waiting for the 5600 only for the memory card and MP camera and screen.

Deval, ok i have read a lot of the posts on here but the more that I have read from you the more informed I get, so I guess this is a direct question from me to you but in the long run it might help a lot of people decide. Ok so we are all wanting to know the answer to a basic question... What phone is going to be the best out of the lg 535, and the sanyo 5600 and the 7400 and why? What are the differences between them all? I have had just about every new phone that sprint has come out with including the vm4500 and the (now)A700, but camera wise I have to say that the 4500 blows samsung out of the water especially when you watch your video capture playback. Samsung seem to play back all choppy. Nothing can surpass the VM4500 when it comes to camera quality. But now that I have my hands on the A700 I love the way samsung has updated their menu and the way their software works. I.E. You can press the talk key and it will list all outgoing, incoming, and missed calls in order instead of having to go through each outgoing, incoming, and missed menu selection, as well as other things. But the A700 does loack the speakerphone feature whether you use RL or not. It is always nice to have. So please ANYONE, can you help me to learn more about the new phones that are coming out in comparison to one another (features and prices) and maybe if anyone can let us in on a few release dates that you all may know about? as compared to what? In my store, it moves, BUT, not as much as the other phones...the a660 sells like mad...and the 8200 as well. Most of the customers who come into my store arent really looking to get the biggest/fanciest things, so I cant say it sells as well, but thats not knocking the phone.

So, Deval, just admit you don't know jack! LOL
yeah yeah....thanks hunni :p
What I do know I can't share...

I know for your average customer $400 seems like alot, but we forget that most of us spent like $400 on the VM4500 last year @ this time...next month makes it a year since it was launched

Thats close but not all the way true. As a former manager there were select reps, managers, etc...who got to go to special meetings....and were "in the know"....How do I know??? Do a search...I posted a live picture of the 5500 about 2 months before it came out....I also hinted of the great screen the 4050 had and lastly the actual date and price we would see the 4500..Many reps might be in the know but dont want to risk their jobs to disclose info ....This board is watched by Sprint believe it or not....

I know that. There are def those in the know. But, let's just say Deval isn't in the know (and like he says, if he is, you'll never know). Most Sprint employees, especially in sales and CS, don't likely know. That's what I was saying.
So, on an unrelated note, msrandall, can you get my husband out of his Verizon contract so I can port him over and get him one of these spiffy yet-to-be-released phones?
Nevermind. Long story that's too OT.

The 7400 also keeps a persistant connection to the WAP proxy...
which ultimately means, very fast WAP loading on clicking a link.

MsRandall

The keys leds are blue and the screen is better than any other Sanyo phone in production currently...the 5600 will have a better screen than the 7400.

Can You Asign Differents Ringers To Your Contacts Or Won't Let You , Cause I Read In Someplace That Won't Let You , I'm Hoping That Let You Assign Differents Ringers To Different Contacts In The Add. Book Cause That's What I Love, Thanks
MsRandall

Yes you can assign ringers for different contacts...the option I think everyone is confusing it with is the video caller id customization...that can only be set for caller id and no caller id and not individual phone book contacts

Thank You But I Thought That One The Video Id You Can Assign To Different Contacts, If I'm Not Mistaken I Read Someone That Took A Video Of His Girlfriend And Assign It, I'm Confused
MsRandall
