I'm a newbie and I've tried to read previous posts to try and find the solution to my problem, but I haven't found it. If it's there, I apologize in advance.
Anyway, I purchased a data cable off ebay for my Sanyo 8100, installed the drivers (from sprint) and downloaded and installed Bitpim. Whenever I try to "get phone data" it says it can't find the port. When I check the list of comm ports, it doesn't look like USB is one of them. Is there something I have to do for Bitpim to look for my USB port?
I mainly want to use Bitpim for contact list updating.
Any help would be appreciated

After you connect the phone, go into Device manager, look under Modems, right click on the phone and on one of the pages, it will tell you want Com port its assigned to.

I did that and I actually switched it so it would be COM1. The two COM ports on my computer are now COM2 and COM5. Unfortunately, Bitpim only lists COM2 and COM5. It will not list any other COM ports

Change it to Com 6 or something and try again.

I changed the Sanyo to COM6 and the Communication ports back to COM1 and COM2. Bitpim now only shows COM1 and COM2

It sounds like there is something else using a COM port that is active and changing as you go. Do you have a printer or fax/scanner attached? If so, I suggest removing the cables for these items until after you get the phone working.

The only other thing I have plugged in using USB is my iPAQ. I'll try unplugging that from my computer and see what happens.

I also have a USB scanner. I shut down my computer, unplugged my iPAQ, unplugged my scanner and restarted. I tried Bitpim again and it still only listed COM1 and COM2 which I dont' have anything plugged into. I'm beginning to think that this is not a common problem. Could Bitpim not recognize the cable I bought?

Try removing the drivers for the phone ( with all other USB and serial port items disconnected), then rebooting, then reinstalling, then rebooting, then plugging in the phone and look for the phone (or modem) under the Device manager.

I finally got it working. I uninstalled Bitpim 6.0 and installed the latest 7.2 version and everthing worked without a problem. I have no idea why that worked, but I'm not going to question it! Thanks, DCDave, for the help.

BitPim didn't add support for the Sanyo 8100 until 0.7.14 or so. You should always use the newest version. :eyeroll:

I have BitPim V7.33. When I install the driver for the modem I get the confirmation that it detects a Sanyo scp 8100. My deduction there is that my cable is good, right there is that correct?
In the BitPim setting I chose Sanyo SCP 8100 Bell Mobility.
Reading this thread I thought that my problems were solved. I made sure that the com port was the same (COM5). Did not solve the problem.
When I start BitPim and that I do detect Phone I get no phone detected/recognized.
Any suggestions?
