Ok so I've been reading over www.xbox-scene.com and their forums on xbox hacking and such and for someone who is used to the PS2 and such it is a really hard forum to navigate and find just some basic info for newbies.
Anyway does anyone here have any recomendations for modchips and such and current info on HD sizes that various ones will support. I'm not computer illiterate, just xbox illiterate.
My buddy is also about to buy one but I'm not sure what he's using it for because he does all his gaming off his PC. Anyway any advice or info would be great.

an xbox is a computer. get a mod chip that can be turned off for online play. most mod chips require an 80 gig hd.

I know their is a website out their on the net and I have been to it where u can install two hardrives into your xbox and run it on with a modchip and off when your are online.........But for all the money you will spend why dont you just install a mod chip with a 120gig hardrive (like dirtlegdan said), and buy a used or new regular xbox so when you go on xbox live they wont detect the mod chip and ban you..........Buying an extra used xbox would save money......$$$$$

From what I understand, XBOX live isn't detecting your mod chip. They record your serial number from your XBOX and your SN from your HD (and probably your SID). One question I've had is this:
All GOOD mod chips allow you to run the original XBOX BIOS in its pure form. It seems like as long as you've never been on XBOX Live, you can register with your new settings. In other words, if you install the HD in your XBOX, run the standard BIOS and THEN sign up for Live, it should have your HD SN on file.
Just a thought.

no, buy an executor lite. They are easy to install. You can get a no solder one that just screws in. They have external switches that your can mount onto the back to turn it on and off. All you have to do is buy a modchip, a 120gig hd(you can buy any size you want) screw the chip in and fire it up. Dont ever have the mod chip turned on and go to the xbox live menue. If you boot with the modchip on you will be banned from live. Dont buy two xbox's just turn the switch off. There are ways of getting unbanned, but that requires a lot of work, and an xbox that you wont be using for live. I can help more if anyone needs it.
Hey, I have moded several Xboxs. The xecuter lite is probably the best chip. Its great. Also, i wouldnt suggest to get a HD less than 200GB especially since you can get those for under a $100 now. 200GB will let you put around 40 games. Each game can range from 600mb to 2gb generally. And if you rip dvds they take about 8gb.
As for xbox live, once you replace the HD, microsoft can detect you. They no longer only look for the chip, now they also search for unlocked HDs. And there are reports of them formating your hard drive if they detect it. So it is not worth it at all to use Live. However, you can use a similar free service called XBConnect or XB Tunnel.
Hope that helps

Ummm. I have been in the xbox modding scene since before there was xbox mods and I don't like the misinformation I am seeing.
First off, you do not need to replace the HD at all. If you dont plan on using the drive to store games or other stuff there is no need to replace it. You can run games and other stuff off of burned DVD-rs or you can still put small stuff on the retail drive although games won't really fit. The one thing that is a necesity if you want to use live is if the hard drive can be locked. Check http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/ to check compatibility. In order to use the normal retail BIOS it HAS to be locked. And in order to go on xbox live, you have to use the retail bios or your xbox will be banned. Now, this being said, you can replace your drive and still use xbox live as long as the new drive is locked. The order of which the drive is replaced and xbox live is first setup does not matter. As long as you are using the retail bios on xbox live, you are fine.
Now, the mod chip choice. Its really up to you and how much you are willing to spend and what features you want. I, personally, have a Xecuter 3. Most of the newer chips can be installed with a solderless option. However, if you can solder, soldering is the best way because you don't have to worry about the pogo pins not lining up etc. Also, if the xbox is a v1.6 you will have to solder no matter what in order to use any mod.
I hope this clears some stuff up.

How is the Xecuter3?? I have an old Xecuter 2 Pro chip. I usually use my hard drive for emulators... Mame, Fbax, stepmania (technically not an emulator), and of course the KI emulator! When I first saw it was out long ago, I was like

Its nice but I would just keep your X2 Pro unless you have money to burn. Not worth the $50 or whatever for the new features unless you are really into your xbox modding.

I just got my X3 in the mail the other day but I don't have a good soldering iron, so I haven't installed it yet. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

U could also look into softmodding it, it doesnt cost a dime. I've done it for a bunch of my friends that dont use live so they dont have to worry about it automatically updating and erasing all the work.

Hey, I have a question. I installed my Xecuter 3 CE mod chip, and it runs. The blue flash bios screen appears. My question is, how do I flash bios? Like am I suppose to get evox?, and if so, which one am I suppose to d/l.... http://www.evox.xboxhackz.net/ Then I have another question. What site can I go to do get a program where i can rip games onto my xbox. So if ANYONE can reply the answers back, how to flash bios, and what program to use/what website its from to rip games to xbox, please do so. Thanks a lot to whoever may help me out.
