Ok now before I begin I just want to say I'm not looking to make this a thread for replies like "xbox is the s**t PS2 sucks or vice versa.

I'm finally looking at dropping some money on a new game system and I've always been a Playstation fan mainly because of the games and I like the controller better. However I can't get away from the fact that the Xbox has quite a few hacks and some really good games too.

I've always loved the Metal Gear Solid games and that would be a big reason for the PS2 that and the Silent Hill (action adventure style games) and yes even the Final Fantasy series when I'm in an RPG kinda mood.

Anyone have any good suggestions on reasons why I should or shouldn't stick with my tried and true and get the PS2 instead of the Xbox.

I have a PS2, Gamecube, XBox, and a Dremcast. They all get time, but my XBox gets more action than any of the others. Why? For one, the majority of the time the graphics are better. There are some companies that seem to take a PS2 game and just port it over to the XBox without taking advantage of the fact that the XBox is a more powerful machine, but that doesn't happen too often anymore. Usually if a game comes out for the PS2 and the XBox, I get it for the XBox. Not having to worry about a memory card is great. And games for the XBox generally take advantage of 5.1 Dolby Digital. Very cool if you got a Home Theater setup.

But in the end, your decision should lean towards one thing: the games. If the PS2 has the majority of the games you want to play, why buy an XBox? IF you can aford them both, I'd say go for it. You'll never see Halo on the PS2. But then there are games on the PS2 you may never see on the XBox. You may not give a sh#t about Halo. The XBox gets a lot of PC ports, like Doom 3 and such. But if you have a pretty good PC setup, a fast PC with a good video card will genrally outshine the XBox. My adivce: if you can't have both, look at the titles that they have coming out, and decide that way. I like Metal Gear, but I played the last Splinter Cell on the XBox and was more than happy. I'm not into the whole survival/horror bit. The XBox has just recently started getting good RPG's, but I think Final Fantasy will always be a Sony/Nintendo thing. And XBox Live is VERY cool, if you're into online play.

Yeah the only gaming I do on my PC is a little Unreal Tourney or Quake 3 other than that my PC is a video editing, web design, 3d design machine (and a sprintusers posting machine :D)

I've been looking over ps2 and xbox.ign.com and noticing that since I quit keeping up with what games are coming out for both about a year ago that now there are a bunch I either know I like or would like or are out for both. I've always prefered my gaming on my TV with my home theater setup. I did play Splinter Cell: PT at a buddies house and loved it, that and I've always loved the EA Sports games.

And I know this is a pretty silly reason to lean towards the Xbox but there is finally two rugby games for the xbox were before it was only available for the PS2. Neither are by EA Sports like the PS2 ones are but hey

Yeah, EA coming on board with Live support is a really big deal. The ESPN series of games are very good, and with them coming out at $20 they're a damn good buy, but Madden is Madden, you know? And if you're a football head, chances are you've been playing Madden.

I believe Quake and Unreal are on the XBox, and they're Live enabled. You'll probably miss using the mouse and keyboard, though. I've always favored a controller. Now that the XBox has the smaller controller, I have no complaints. A hard drive usually equals short or no load times. XBox live games have downloadable content, like Splinter Cell having new multiplayer maps, and Project Gotham Racing having new cars and cities to race in. And did I mention Halo? To be honest, that was my reason for buying the XBox initially. I'm a gamer from wwwaayyy back, so by default I was going to try to have all the systems. But Halo REALLY had me. It's a great game. And Halo 2 will be out in three weeks. I'm VERY excited about it.

If you're really leaning towards the XBox, then get it. Keep the receipt. You have anywhere from 2 weeks to 30 dayz to either fall in love or pack it back up. No harm, no foul.

Gamecube, for one reason - Metroid Prime: Echoes (Nov. 15th).

I love my Gamecube. That having been said, I have never owned nor hardly ever played a PS2 or Xbox :) And I don't play my Gamecube that much. But Gamecube gets dissed a lot, and if not dissed just ignored. So I just wanted to add my meager voice and my one nod for the Gamecube.

Please continue...

I'm pretty sure that there's no parappa the rapper on the XBox. And I'm a follower of Gran Turismo as well. GT4 is looking sswweeettt. The XBox is suppose to be coming out with something that some label a "Gran Turismo Killer". Rrrriiiggghhhttttt ....

I just finished (?) Burnout 3. Highly recommended if you're into driving games. Pure adrenaline.

I'd never knock the `cube. It's been dissed more by the industry than by gamers. Metroid Prime, Zelda, Mario Sunshine, hell even Mario Golf and Mario Cart ... classics. They're just to few and far between.

One reason for PS2: GTA San Andreas (although I think it'll be ported to Xbox after a while)

The GTA series are all I play on PS2 nowadays. I often find myself playing my friend's mod'ed Xbox (he stores gangs of games in there, and the load time is faster).

I'd get an Xbox if I were you, or if you can wait for the next generation consoles to come out...

FreddyC

GTA:SA sounds like it's going to be very cool. I'd get it if Halo wasn't so close to being released. I may wait until it comes out for the XBox. I know, it'll be a while. But there are so many other things coming out that I want, I think I'll be distracted enough.

Freddy C. i agree. The gamecube is a great little system. (i'm waiting for metroid prime 2 and Resident evil 4).

Noodle you have a hard choice here! i have a PS2 and i'm looking forward to the next GTA SA...and final fantasy 12 :)

I think i might get an xbox soon...mainly because of halo 2.

or...the nintendo DS...(and eventually the sony PSP)

I have both. I just traded in two Playstation 2s for the newer PStwo coming out tomorrow. I hope they fixed the laser bugs FINALLY because the ones I traded were hit and miss on working. I play online with both and let me tell you that Xbox Live blows Playstation Network Adaptor away. If Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was coming to Xbox sooner than later Playstation would be gone!!! I am so ready for Halo 2.

at first i was all ps2, but now i hear alot about xbox(plus fable looks pretty good and i dont really like RPGs) graphics are definetly better ,but the controller annoys me so much that i cant stand it...ps2 u cant go wrong, but if u get an xobx u GOTTA get it modded...i feel like that puts it over the top due to storage and all the games, movies, or just xtra data u can throw on there...

if ur a straight gamer, i'd say ps2...much more comp online (its free) and get the s-video(monster cables), if ur tv allows for it, and the graphics look soooo much better. (u actually notice the difference!) got my s-video split like 4ways (ps2, dvd, digicablebox, &other) :joy:

As everything, both have their ups and downs.

PS2: lots of games, can play old ps1 games, decent graphics
xbox: better graphics, faster processor, Hard drive, native internet capabilities

i have an xbox, and i love it. i have xbox live, and love rainbow six, and project gotham 2. if i had the cash, i would buy a ps2 in addition, so maybe just plan to get both if you really want em.

I'm not a fan of the xbox controller either but for certain games I can always get the adaptor to use a playstation controller on the xbox.

I do like the fact that PS2 online is free but the xbox overall is definately looking better and better. There is an ps2 emulator in the works for the Xbox but who knows when it will see daylight.

I have big hands, so the stock ps2 controller got annoying to me after awhile. it also depends on which controller you get on the xbox. they have the smaller stock controller, or a bigger one. i even went and bought the 30 dollar controller with a fan in it, and i would never go back..it rocks.

I have have the X-box (with the you know what I'm talking about but I won't say online but we all know yet i'm not incriminating myself) and PS2. The you know what has many good things such as "old memories of the past" and the ability to "make rented games last longer" and Halo which is awesoem. PS2 has Final fantasys which are very important to me anyway and Devil May Cry 1 and 2 and 3s coming out soon which are awesome. I consider my opinion unbiased but I'd go with PS2. X-Box with "you know what" is awesoem but if I was restricted to one I would stay with the playstation. Now if you play sports games my friends say X-Box is better, but I saw PS2 has the superior controller which is very important to me. Now as for Nintendo here comes a little bias as I think its the worst controller ever and all their games eighter suck or they are available on other platforms.

i'd say go w/the ps2 and do these 2 things

1st buy a HDLoader

2nd pick up a 120 Maxtor harddrive

If you havent heard of it, HDLoader is a cd that lets you burn games to your harddrive (it doesnt have to be the official sony one). the load times are on par w/the xbox (if not faster). Then just pick up a game pass from blockbuster ($20)...it'll save u a lot of $$$

- my 2 cents

Ummm.. not that I necessarily condone it, but you do know you can do the hard drive thing with the xbox also (as a certain someone that posted right before you was talking about)? If you already knew then sorry, I just wasn't clear why you would pick the ps2 over the xbox for that reason if both systems can do the same thing you're talking about.

Anyways, I would go with the other peoples posts and say go with the system that has the games you like better. I'd pick a ps2 because I like the FF series and want GT4. If you're gonna play games that both systems have (like many EA sports games) than just stick with the xbox.. It has faster load times and better graphics.

yeah, i know xbox can "burn games", i was just letting noodle know ps2 has the capability as well.....id basically say, if you want an abudance of games (minus halo, and a few others), id go w/ps2..i think ps2 also has a MUCH more comfortable controller....the controller is the main thing keeping me away from it...i wouldnt mind the pretty graphics though....and lastly dont get the pstwo (the new slim version) if you plan on gettin' a harddrive

i agree...i feel the controller is MUCH better and the hard drive thing is pretty cool. u can switch harddrives, more gigs, less gigs also.
Plus, u got so many good games coming out. many on xbox but franchise hits like GTA:SanAndreas and GranTurismo4 on ps2...on top of all that almost everyone got one, increasing the multiplayer action and longevity of games

S-video also helps graphics a bit, still not xbox level...but honestly many times i found i dont really care

and in case some of you who have been nice enough to reply tho this thread I'll redo a few comments I made earlier.

The reasons I would go with the PS2 are... the final fantasy series, the gran turismo series, the silent hill series (some of them are out for the xbox though), the controller i'm more used to but I can get an adaptor and use the PS2 controller with the Xbox, online play is free compared to the Xbox, the hard drive issue, granted I don't know much about the new hard drive with the PS2. I'll straight up admit it but with my old PS1 I had about 50 legally purchaced games and about 200 burned games with a mod chip. Anyway I still hold Sony close to my heart with the games only they can get however the Xbox has come along way sine it came out.

Now I don't condone it but I hate buying games and having them suck ***** wich is why I rent before I buy.. then again there are plenty of games I like to play but still wouldn't pay the $50 for it because it isn't that good, but still good enough to have on hand.

All 3 systems are awesome for different reasons.

The GameCube is good a secondary system (especially @ $99) or if you don't game very often. It doesn't have as many titles as PS2 or XBox but the games that Nintendo does release are usually classic. Upcoming exclusive games like Metroid Prime 2, Resident Evil 4, and the new Zelda will no doubt be classics. You can also play over a thousand great GameBoyAdvance games on the 'Cube with the GameBoyPlayer.

The X-Box is great if you're into online gaming. Not even the PS2 has the same quality on online game as X-Box Live. Also the graphics are the best and Halo 2 is gonna be huge. The problem is that there isn't much else to look forward to. Most X-Box games are ports of PS2 titles. Yet if you're into sports games, you would be a fool to not pick the X-Box.

PS2 is the motherload of all systems. It has the most games, most support, and best bin bargin in the business. Exclusives are the name of the game with GameCube and PS2, and PS2 has plenty. Devil May Cry, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Turismo, Ranchet & Clank, etc. Plus the online community is growing. Finally the new PStwo console is the smallest console on the market.

The choice is yours...

I second that. I have always been the PS2 fan, just for the games that have come out in the past. GTA3, GT2, Onimusha, Spy Hunter... plus the ability to play the old school PSX games.

i dunno about the nes, snes, and genesis games....there might be some kind of emulator out there though....but yeah, if you have a network adaptor, harddrive, and a HDLoader cd, you can burn 98% of ps2's games onto the harddrive
